What brand are you talking about? There's the one made by performance that's pretty common. I don't recall it having a button. Not sure what you would need a button on a controller pak for. By controller pak, you do mean memory card...correct?
Yes memory card that goes into the controller aka controller pak. This one was a transparent one by H&H and it has a black button on the back.
I sent this to someone and he says it doesn't work for him. So I told him to start up N64 and holding start button down to get into the sava data menu to delete everything cause it might be full, but she said that didn't even work. But you can get in that menu even if your memory card doesn't work I think?
The button is probably to switch between different memory banks. The official one only had one memory bank. Some third party ones had more than 1 bank and you had to push a button to switch between them.
