The Mystery of the Transparent Orange GBC

I purchased a Nintendo lot a week ago and it contained two GBCs. One was a fairly standard transparent purple model. The other was something much stranger- a transparent orange model. Not the Daiei model, which had a black back. Not either of the orange soda branded GBCs released in Turkey/elsewhere. A solid sheet of transparent orange from front to back.

I've considered the possibility that this is an aftermarket shell but the aftermarket GBC orange covers seem to be a more dull color and I doubt their copyright dates say 1998.

I've seen one other model like this, with a pokemon screen (almost certainly ripped from one of the Gold/Silver GBCs and used as a replacement) and it sold for 250 dollars as the owner claimed that the Atomic Orange GBC existed as a mock up to show to investors/industry people but which didn't get approved for a formal release. But I can find no corroborating evidence.

To make matters more confusing, at the bottom of the battery area there's a small hole in the shell leading to a peculiar black rectangle with an odd metal 'screw' looking thing that another collector friend has said he's never seen on Nintendo hardware.

Can you help me identify what exactly this thing is?

  • It could be the Yedigun or the Mirinda just with the logo removed.

It is pretty odd and cool though.

Pretty sure those logos weren't stickers or anything easily removed- you'd have to buff them off if it was even possible, and there'd be wear from that.

  • It's more then likely a shell swap.
  • Looks like there are misspellings on the back sticker so most likely an after market case. After patent, issued appears to be spelled issuod
  • I have seen a similar transparent yellow gbc which was a Chinese knockoff, and its very well thats what you have except someone installed OEM parts inside, aka case swap.
  • It's just a replacement shell, they come in little kits with the sticker for the back too, along with some other things. They do not come with the serial sticker though, which would be why this one is missing it.
