eBay Help!

I just got the following message from someone who bought a copy of Super Smash Bros. Melee from me:

Dear tiger_town_games,

I don't think I want this anymore, because I'm getting tired of this since I don't play it that often anymore (NO OFFENSE). I really want a full refund for $52.98.

So is it ok if I return this to you because it's been 8 business days SANS weekends and 14 days is not up yet. I got it on Thursday October 30, 2014. What is your current address so I can sent it to you?

And how many days I wait for the money to get into my debit card?

I allow 14 day returns, but in all of my listings I clearly put that I only accept retunrs if there is a problem with the item. How should I act in this situation? Am I obligated to give this person a refund?

Comments

  • It is possible he impulsively bought it, realized he could have bought it for cheaper and now wants to return it.
  • I can't stand hearing stories like this, soo frustrating as a seller to get a message like this. You're not a rental service so why do people expect to treat you like that? There is no way I would allow a return for that reason, but you would also risk the guy opening a case, tough call for sure.

You could also tell him to re-sell it himself if he really wants his money back.  You shouldn't have to do all the work for him.
  • I would refuse based on their reason for return. Would eBay really side with a buyer who openly admitted that they wanted to make a return based on not wanting the item?
  • This is crap! I wouldn't do a return with him and if he opens a case, you have this wonderful message that admits he has no real problems with the item and you specified that you only do returns if there is a problem. This message would also be your proof if he were to change his story to it being damaged (caused by him to get his way of course). If ebay sides with the buyer then we should all boycott the company because its already super ridiculous for sellers to function on there!
  • Buyers remorse I hate these guys. Id tell him to stick it. And take the negative hit. I just don't care im tired of ebay always siding with the buyer on stupid crap. I would not take it back based on the condition it is in now. Being in someone else's hands for a few days.
  • Thanks for the help guys! Hopefully he won't leave negative feedback or open a case. Here is the response I sent him:

    Dear tkim9288,

If you read the description where I put my terms you can see the line that reads: "I only accept returns if there is an actual problem with the item. I will not accept returns for any other reason."

So I'm sorry but I cannot accept a return on this item.

  • No returns for people with poor grammar either...
  • That's why I put no returns on my listings. I know ebay is excluding me from the secret VIP club because of it but I don't want problems. If you list a return period then I'm not sure how ebay will act about exclusions being in the listing. This guy could win a case because often ebay acts on behalf of the buyer without full research.

If it were me I'd take it back and relist it. A negative will hurt you far worse in the long run.
  • Honestly I would just get the item back make sure it is in the same condition you sent it issue a refund less the shipping you paid to ship it and do a cancel transaction to get your fees back. It is not like this is going to happen all the time kind of a freak occurrence.

Than again he already left you feedback so you could just roll the dice on an ebay case.
  • You're not an online rental service.
  • i hate it when people dont pay but when there isnt any thing wrong with it and they want to return it. screw that!
  • I normally explain that I would take it but I would charge a restocking fee. 15-20% depending on the costs. That should cover your fees and shipping.costs and normally they end up keeping the item instead of returning it.
  • This was the response I got back:

    Dear tiger_town_games,

alright I understand you. Thank you

So looks like it's all good. Thanks for the input guys!
  • I'm happy he seems to understand your response but to even ask to return it is ridiculous. (Sorry he didn't ask, he told you he was returning it.)

I guess lucky for me I'm normally the buyer in eBay so I don't have to worry about things like this.
  • It sounds like he could be a re-seller. Probably bought it thinking he could re-sell it for more than he actually could and then wanted to return it when he realized he couldn't make as much profit as he thought. I wouldn't give a refund in this situation.

You could be right...here is his final message to me. I found it quite humorous...

    Dear tiger_town_games,

I already cancel the return request, so I will NOT return it. I'll sell it instead to get mad money.

Lol that is pretty funny. He's going to make MAD MONEY. Glad to hear everything worked out.

  • So not a reseller. He's just a guy who saw the 14 day return period and thought it meant without reason. In all fairness most return policies (excluding games) are without reason both online and local so it's not too hard to fathom. We just expect more because we work or have worked on the other side of the desk.

I may actually look into the 14 day return for defects only. It will give me a discount on ebay fees.
  • This deals more with ebay but is good to remember for the coming months. As long as things don't change, effective immediately at the start of the new year, all sellers and listings on ebay will be switched to free returns paid by the seller if the item is returned NAD (not as described). I think it will truly become a buyers market at that point. I'm looking forward to taking chances on bad listings without pictures from lazy sellers risk-free . "oh gee, this game was listed as very good with no description but didn't have the box and manual, RETURNED"
