Sega Genesis model 1 power supply

Just curious if anyone had experience using any generic power supplies for a Sega Genesis model 1 system. The current power supply I have is going bad (lots of humming being produced from the system). I have heard some of the "Retro" releases work for some systems but others not so much. Any advice other than just trying to find an original that still works well? Anyone have any first-hand experience using one of the newer power supplies on their model 1 Genesis? Thanks in advance!

  • Avoid those 3-in-1 retro console AC adapters, they're garbage. I tried one and it produced rolling bands of interference through the video output. The AC adapter had zero shielding. Other than finding a working original AC adapter (SMS adapters work too), Radio Shack makes a universal 9v 1500mA adapter with the appropriate plug (plug M IIRC). I used one with my Genesis (now it powers my NES) and it works great. Half the size of the old black bricks and no phantom power draw. Only downside is it costs about $35.
  • Just get one off ebay. I have a 3-1 and couldn't be happier with it as it replaces two power supplies. I use it for NES and SNES though and got a Duo cord more Genesis and Master System. The duo is intended for Genesis and 32x but the ends and power are the same.

Anyway, this is a good design and will work well http://www.ebay.com/itm/Replacement-9V-1A-1-2A-Power-Supply-Adapter-Charger-Cord-Wall-Plug-Sega-Genesis-/301362294226?pt=Power_Cables_Connectors&hash=item462a97add2

Interesting, so you have used this with your Genesis and it works without issue? If so I will definitely pick one up. I have just heard of video and maybe sound issues with the generic ones.

  • I use composite input. Perhaps those with issues use RF? I've used that one, but with the NES and a Sears Arcade 2 (2600) without issue.

I've never had issues with any power supply causing interference. That sounds more like a household wiring problem of some sort than with the power supply.
  • Frankly if one has so little money there's no other way than RF to use Genesis, video games are the least of their concern.
  • They used the same ac adapter for sega cd units as well. Whatever you get just be careful before you plug it in as it has to be center-negative which is less common.
  • Well I went ahead and bought the adapter mkiker2089 suggested, it was cheap enough to try out. Will post with results, looking forward to seeing how it works out.
  • Success! Thanks for the recommendation Marshall, no buzzing sound now or any issues with the new power supply
