Can anyone give me some advice about getting a P.O. Box?

Just curious how a P.O. Box works and if anyone has one if it's worth getting one? I've been really worried someone is going to steal a package right off my doorstep since I don't get home until 5-6 and mail delivers at around 2. When you get one, how much does it typically cost and how do you access one?

  • I don't remember what the cost is, but you pay every six months. They come in different sizes.

You could instead just leave a note on the door saying not to leave packages and they'll leave a pink slip that you take to the post office to get your package. It's free that way.

That sounds a lot better, I think I'll do that instead thanks
  • i have a PO box. i spend about $30 a year. no shoveling out a mailbox, no worrying about theft or a package getting rained on, the box just says safe there until i go retrieve it. i think the idea of that security is worth it in my mind.
  • Just remember -- no FedEx or UPS to that box.
  • I have had one if you get a lot of packages it is going to be a pain to get them. I recommend a box at the ups store. You can receive usps, fed ex, and ups packages and they can notify you when you have mail.
  • The price in my town is something like $70-$80 per year, and that's totally worth it to avoid stolen packages.

There are a lot of sellers on eBay who refuse to ship via USPS though, so if you think that's going to be a problem for you, check out the mailboxes at your local UPS store. They are setup just like normal street addresses so that you can receive all sorts of packages.
  • i actually get USP and Fed Ex shipments to my PO Box, but my post office is kinda awesome like that... benefit of small town living, i spose.
  • you can get 6 mos. or a year rental .... depending on your area prices vary

its a secure sense of security and its private .... also receive all size packages ( esp. if they are bigger than the box, they will provide a key too a lock box )
  • Love my p.o box. I had the same worries iuntil I realized my neighbors are cool. So now if a package come to my house one of my neighbors will hold onto it for me until I get home
  • Does anyone have a PO box outside the USPS? I know one person mentioned the UPS store. I know some buisnesses used to offer addresses like PO boxes but I haven't seen any lately.
