Tablet vs Laptop

So Christmas is coming, and that means I get to have one "big" gift from my parents. I've limited it to a Tablet or Laptop.

My old Laptop is about 7+ years old so it's time for an upgrade lol.

Now I'm big on PC gaming, so if something goes wrong with my main PC, I don't want to be without some games. That makes me lean to a Laptop that can handle basic stuff like TF2 or Minecraft at least. Nothing like Garry's Mod or ESO.

But I like to web surf, watch videos and I really like the idea of getting a kindle app and some game apps. Also plus side is Tablet is great for in bed if I can't sleep. Nothing like reading a good book to make me sleepy.

So I'm kinda split. Which is why I turn to you guys. Maybe you can give me more pros/cons, some good brands to check out or just general ideas. Price range is going to be...under $300 if possible (I'm thinking about the Laptop prices).

Also if there is a VERY good deal on Black Friday, include it. But it has to be like half off or something. I don't want to face the crowds for $50 off. Otherwise Cyber Monday deals.

I don't even know if it's possible to get a good Laptop for gaming under $300...I'm sure you guys can tell me.

Thanks!

  • lucky for you im a computer tech so i get to dabble with new crap all the time. heres what i think would fit you perfectly

    ASUS TAICHI21-UH51 11.6" 128 GB Intel Core i5 1.7 GH 4GB Ultrabook Computer

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/151461495939?lpid=82

its a tablet and a laptop (double sided screen both are separate from one anather). and not bad in power considering its size. i was able to run the modified desumue (ds emulator) (x432R) and x4 the normal resolution at 30fps and it ran fairly quickly. and desumue is a very heavy program.

its got a solid state in it so no worries with damaging your HDD wile moving about. only down side is it get warm when being used but not a big deal to me imo.
  • I'm actually keeping an eye out for Black Friday deals on a new notebook as well. My Dell Inpsiron e1505 Core 2 Duo from '06 is just about worn out. It was great while it lasted though.

Amazon is running some nice pre-BF deals on laptops, and convertibles between now and Friday.

I'd imagine you're looking more at a $500+ setup if you want to use it for gaming though. Admittedly I do most of my gaming on the PS4/Wii U/PS3/Vita/3DS systems so I'm more concerned with a nice clear IPS LED screen of at least 15" to work with Photoshop and web design with. I've noticed the cheaper laptops have displays which have lower resolutions than what is ideal. So again, if that is important I would read reviews and specs.

That thing is pretty bad ass. I wonder how lightweight it is. Don't want to look too much into it, because then I'll want one. lol.

  • I guess I'm a weirdo for sticking with a 7+ year old laptop, ThinkPads never go out of style. Hell, I've even done internet tasks on an old Dell Latitide with a Windows 2000 COA (currently runs Windows 98SE).

lol i have an old computer with 98SE.  its got 512 SD ram and a pentium 2 @ 450mhz XD  its can go on the internet. but its kinda slow lol
  • Even an Intel 4000 IGP can play TF2 at 720p at playable framerates these days. So no worries on that front.

I'd go with a convertible tablet

Wait so tablets can play real games? lol...do you know of any under $300 that can play pre 2008 games? Most of the games I want to play are that old or older...

@nes freak: Looks nice but that price is to much. I'm stretching the budget at $300.

  • I wouldn't recommend anything under $500 to be honest.

*Maybe* you can try a Vivotab, but I haven't tried it.

What about the Nvidia Shield Tablet? I heard it was an actual "gaming" tablet. Not that I trust Nvidia...had a graphics card really crap out on me from them...errors everywhere. But would it be a good mix between gaming and tablet?

  • You can get a notebook with an AMD A8 APU in it for $300-$350. A8 plays Valve Source games like a boss no issues. Hell, I had an HP a few years ago I sold here with an A8 when they were brand new and I played Diablo 3, CoD MW3, Dead Island, all sorts of stuff on it.

    Found my old thread

    http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=6&threadid=81205

55 FPS avg on COD MW3 on high, and 40fps avg Dead Island on medium.

Like I said, AMD APUs are a beast at mid range gaming for the price.

300 dollar computers arnt that great imo.  if you get a computer from walmart  (or just cheap in general) its likley to end up having issues due to cheap manufactureing.  nvidia is good, you problably had a faulty driver or hardware or your motherboard wasnt fully conpatable.

my experience with tablets  (not all of them)  cause some run off the arm cpu  and most program that would normaly work for windows dont...  so if your wanting gaming i reccomend a small laptop with a fast i3 or i5 dual core preferably a quad core cpu.  with atleast 4gb ram  and a decent graphix card and an SSD.

tablets tend to be limited when it comes to doing stuff. speaking of tablets heres anather one you may like

buts its out of your price range...

  • I don't think I can have my cake and eat it to...gaming tablets just arn't to where I need them to be. So I need a laptop and a tablet. I'm going to get a tablet this year and hold off on the laptop for another year or two.

Eyeing up the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4. It seems to be able to run gaming apps well and looks...ok. The Kindle Fire HDX 7 looks nicer but I can't get Google Play apps on it. So I'm not going to get a Kindle since they're limiting you...I want to be free lol.

But someone mentioned the Nexus 7...how is it compared to the Galaxy?

Cant begin to say how true this is.  Toshiba seems to put out tons of cheapy units.  More then any other company.  My clients bring them in left and right withbroken touchpad buttons, cracked hinges, broken battery clips, etc....They are just seriously built to be used til broken and tossed.  Its a shame really.

If you're fairly tech savvy, you could get a slightly older Kindle and use Cyanogenmod or N2Aos to get a full Android experience on it.

There's a quick comparison of the Galaxy vs the Nexus here:

    http://www.gizmag.com/nexus-7-vs-galaxy-tab-pro-8-4/30742/

So you generally get more out of the Samsung, but at a higher price. Plus it's up to you whether you prefer Touchwiz or default Android, fake leather or regular plastic, IPS or LCD. I have used the Nexus 7 though and if you like smaller tablets it is very nice. It's quick and responsive, has a beautiful screen, and is lightweight. Though if you want to play some games a bigger screen might be nicer.

Ha! Ive seen a few Asus ones like that. Thicknes of a regular unit and a fake disc drive bezel. 1 RAM slot with 4g max lol. Such fail. The only ones ive seen without fans are thesuper low power ones like an AMD E1. Such garbage out there and sadly people eat it up and buy it no questions asked
