Barrel, I know you already checked out IKEA, but I seriously recommend checking out a Besta shelf paired with Inreda drawers. Those drawers paired with 6.25 inch fronts are a perfect fit for NES carts. The drawers fit 68 carts with sleeves or 72 carts without sleeves, and there is about 1/4 inch clearance from the top of the carts to the drawer above it. The only downside is the way the shelves get spaced on the Besta drawers, the bottom drawer won't accomodate NES carts, but shorter carts like SNES, Genesis, N64 will fit.
I honestly haven't found a drawer setup that packs carts tighter together. I snapped a photo of one of the drawers holding some of my NES carts:
I'd recommend divorcing the wife and prevent sun exposure by boarding up the windows but I know that isn't too helpful.
Games are an odd size if you want the boxes. I find DVD units fit pretty well without them, but boxes vary so much you may have to measure. I prefer storing things in door style cabinets but for carts only a drawer set up would work well. I considered making spacers for a drawer unit once but never got around to it.

Thanks for this reply btw. We just bought a Besta TV stand (15% off all Besta stuff for IKEA family members until early december...) but I guess I'm just a bit too picky. NES carts do look damn nice in those drawers. My only complaint about the Besta line is that you really have to figure it all out yourself; it's effectively short of custom cabinets, in that it's almost too versitile to get your head around in-store (e.g., too modular...)
If you can shed any tips, please send me a PM or reply here.
Purchased a few in different sizes including some wall cabinets that I built into base units. Added a piece of 1/4" MDS on top of the wall unit so I could set them about 8"s off the wall. This made a nice little ledge which comes in hand.
One final bump. Getting desperate, and may need to just contract out some custom work.
Bought some of the closet organizer cabinets that are sold at Lowes. You have to put them together but they are fairly easy to build. They are decent for the money and give you ample room. http://images.lowes.com/product/converted/094803/09480310329...

Should add that the two glass display cabinets are not from Lowes. These were actually part of an entertainment center at one point. Found them at a yard sale and repurposed them as a temp catch all.
Nice dude I work for santa clara county. Maybe we can do a meetup sometime with some of the other guys from the bay area!
That'd be cool. Still learning the area, and my radius is slowly expanding.
As for this thread, have decided to just say fuck-it and go for IKEA MALM dressers. They fit NES games nicely and quite visibly. SNES, not so much, but I already have one, so will pick up what's still needed tomorrow.
Thanks for all the input! I'd have loved a more elaborate solution, but IKEA will be cheapest and I can always sell the particle-board solution and re-toy the setup later.

If you have a basement and don't need furniture grade finished shelving OSB plywood and kiln dried 2x4s are the way to go. My basement is approximately 1500sqft and have a mix of hand buit shelving and storage. Majority of it was built with OSB and 2x4s which is very sturdy. To the right of the prior shelving pictured is commercial grade racks with OSB decking. The other side of the basement is primarily all the hand built shelving using only lumber. If you have carpentry skill the hand built shelving is the way to go.
Don't mind the mess I'm in the process of sorting controllers and bringing home boxes from storage.

lmao, thanks for that.
I'm in dire need of anything short of an official NoA cabinet, with a closed front. I'm confident that someone here has dealt with this.
I've toured IKEA twice now. Tall dresser cabinets would do it, but IKEA does not really have stackable units.

Here's a quick picture of what I was trying to explain. It's a small section I built with odds and ends.
