TV Help

My Sony Trinitron (model kvm-2151) started to make strange clicking noises last night, every 10 seconds it would click, and as it clicked the screen would flicker. I could see through the vents in the back that the vacuum tube was glowing absolutely red hot, and I wasn't in the middle of a paticular long session or anything so found this pretty weird. I decided that i would I leave it overnight and let it cool off to see if the clicking noises happen when its just starting to warm up and now ive just a got a grey screen of death

Ive had years of experience dealing with valves in guitar amplifiers and radios but none with Tv's so i'm only about 85% convinced that is what the problem is - anyone have any advice on anything else I can check or look into?

  • I will give you one small bit of advice. Old CRTs can kill you. They store much voltage after powered down. So be careful if you go poking around.
  • Haha good advice -thanks! I have it unplugged at the moment and probably won't get back to it til tomorrow so hopefully should be ok

CRT TVs can carry a potentially lethal charge for years after being unplugged. If you are going to open it up, you should grab yourself a discharge wand to safely drain the TV.

    T
his a quick video i took of the clicking - it seems to be getting worse, whats the verdict? valves?
  • The picture is still distorting with each click? This happened to my old CRT monitor, I believe it was a bad flyback transformer.

Also, the end of the picture tube, at the back of the TV, is actually supposed to glow red/orange. That is normal but there's definitely something wrong. I'm not sure the parts are available but I'm going to guess its also the flyback in this case.

Yeah I know its meant to glow orange, I used to repair old guitar amplifiers and tube radios all the time as part of my old job, I should have been a little more clear in my last post thats my fault. I left the tv off overnight and in my attic where its at it is nice and cool, in the video I quickly put up the tv was litteraly on for about 2/3 seconds before filming starts - if even that.

Now in my experiance a valve in an amplifier usually takes a couple of minutes to warm up, but here this thing looks red hot within seconds of switching the tv on, video done it no justice to how much this thing was glowing. Like I said before though I have no experience with TV's, this could very well be the norm - I mean they do store enough power to kill ya after all!!

Assuming this is norm and i'm looking for something thats not the problem - how would I go about checking if its the flyback transformer?
