Battletoads

I am really digging this game right now. I love the quirky humor and how every level plays so different its almost like a brand new game. It makes me really eager to jump back into it This game is brutally difficult, but I feel like every challenge can be overcome with practice. Even the infamous turbo-tunnels are really fun once you get the hang of them. I feel like I am getting incrementally better, every time I play.

  • Just gotta memorize everything.
  • As a kid I loved this game. until the stupid tunnel. Maybe I had a brain tumor, but could never get the timing down good enough to beat it. I did once, and made it to the water pipe level and never played it again
  • I have mixed feelings about Battletoads. On the one hand it's a really polished game that while stupidly difficult, can be overcome with practice. On the other hand, it's always stressful no matter how many times you play, and you WILL be playing it a lot because the game makes it artificially difficult to practice its bullcrap level traps due to limited continues. I think if they had given you unlimited continues it would have been a much more enjoyable game to learn how to play, but when it's so restrictive with lives it just comes across as poor design. I managed to get good enough to get to stage 9 without warps, but by then I got burnt out on it and never finished it.
  • i recently got back into this game myself, like most people i could never get past the turbo tunnel until now, the farthest ive got was the flying part in level 7, i hear there is way more to the game and i just cant believe it, i love it but i doubt ill be beating it anytime soon
  • This game, while well made, is controller-breakingly difficult. I've never gotten past the Turbo Tunnel and my desire to ever beat this game is almost nonexistent. Playing this game is almost pure torture because I love the first two levels and getting a feeling for where the game is going but getting to level 3 is such a troll move by Rare because 99% of the players have not beaten it. And those that have beaten it probably have no desire to ever try to beat it again because it's hard to the point of not being fun. It's a shame because this game could've been greater than it is.
  • I am probably an average skilled gamer at best. I never owned a NES as a kid, and only recently started playing and beating any Nintendo games. I can beat the turbo tunnels so I think it is definitely doable by more than 1% of players.
  • The funny thing about Turbo Tunnel is that once you get good enough to beat it, it becomes one of the easier parts of the game. Pretty much everything that comes after it is way harder for totally different reasons.

i agree, the game gets out of the beat em up element in the later elements and takes away from what this game was really good at doing, i do enjoy the weird parts like the turbo tunnel and the snake pit, but i wish it coulda been more of a straight forward game

i could beat the turbo tunnel without dying now, the snake pit an surf city are so much harder though, this game really is all about memory though, i havent seen past volkmires inferno, i just know i have hell to play after that

  • This is definitely a childhood favorite of mine, even though I know that I will likely never beat it.

So many fond memories. I, too, love the humor and the atmosphere of the game. Even when I get frustrated, I always come back and play some more.

I believe the furthest I've made it is the log barrels. I simply refuse to remain frustrated, it's a fantastic game (I've beaten Mario Forever/Frustration on an actual cart, so trust me, I carry no stress when I play games, lol).

Finally, the only childhood image I have gaming; go figure that it's this one.... rocking my Mario PJ's too:

Eh?  Battletoads is very generous with regard to lives and continues.  You can literally load of with 10+ lives by stage 2, and it's not that difficult to do.  Then there's the warps you can utlize to skip one of the hardest levels in the game (stage 7), and on top of that, the game gives you what, at least 3 additional continues, maybe more?  I'm also pretty sure there's an easy way to get 5 lives per continue with a code?  There are several parts in the game where you literally can get an extra live right at the start of the checkpoint, so you can keep playing that part without fear of a game over.

  • Yes, this game is initially difficult, but becomes fairly easy once you memorize the levels, boss patterns and practice enough. Like pegboy said, the amount of extra lives you can accumulate in the first two levels adds to the ease of the game. I just recently beat this game. Although it took me almost 2 months of practicing the game over and over, I found the game to be almost laughably easy once you have the game memorized.

With that being said, I found the challenge of the game to be the fun aspect of this game. It's so satisfying once you beat the Dark Queen. It makes the time needed to complete this game worth it in my opinion.
  • dude do you have battletoads?..... sorry

how do you get 10+ lives by level 2 without a code? i try not using codes to beat the game, i know there one at the end of level one, and by the end of level 2 you should have two extra lives from points, but thats all i know of, also where is the warp to skip level 7? that would deff help me out a great deal

i think if you are good at the game the lives can be generous, you have to be able to beat the first about 5 levels without dying which is hard because alot of the parts in those levels you get hit once and you die due to spikes or parts in surf city, turbo tunnel, crows, and etc.

The only thing I can think of is continually smacking the Ravens in the Wookie Hole. (haha)

If you can hit the same bird over and over so many times (I forget how many), you get a 1 Up.

  • Yup, you pretty much just have to "juggle" the birds over and over again and they will give you tons of 1-ups.

On the second section of the snake pit (level 6). Grab the first snake ride it straight up and then jump diagonally to the bottom right side of the screen. It warps you to level 8.

You can say that with any game. And if it were an easy game,I don't think it would have taken you 2 months to memorize patterns, etc to beat it.

     Tetris anyone?

There are definitely games where the pattern recognition is the real hurdle after which the game is "easy".

There are other games where the difficulty is derived from something that is randomized in a way that pattern recognition (at least as it would be used in a shooter or beat-em-up) just isn't a thing.

True, although with routine practice you will improve at any game regardless of difficulty. For Battletoads,I just don't want to put forth the effort to try and beat it....at least at the moment. It's not a terrible game,I just don't want to bother with it as it can get very frustrating.

As you can see from my first post, I clearly stated the game was difficult at first.  It only became easy after a ton of practice.  Just becuase I found it easy once I played the game over and over doesn't make the game any less difficult for anyone else.  I was just willing to put the time in to beat the game.

Yes, I agree that with practice any game can become "easy"

Oh I know. Just saying that any game gets easier with practice, regardless of how difficult it may be.
  • Well at least we can all agree those pause screen beats are bangin'
  • I loved playing Battletoads as a kid... One thing most people seem to overlook / forget... Warp Zones!!

If I remember there's one in Level 1:

Beat the first 3 guys ASAP and run right

    Level 3:

During the crazy car race it's right in front of a barricade

    Level ? (Snake Pit)

Jump over a few snakes and spikes

    There's another one??

If you play these warp zones well you only have to play like every other level, and before you know it you can almost make it to the last level... Almost
  • lol, I have been trying for an hour, I can't even get the first warp zone.
  • Gotta use the double tap run and Head butt on the enemies
  • I love Battletoads. I recently got into speedrunning it and that makes it a lot easier to handle. I think I can beat it using warps in under half an hour, after weeks upon weeks of practice. Go for the speedrunning any% route, much more manageable.

That being said, I don't think it's a particularly good or well designed game, limited continues, huge amount of memorization required to get past all the level traps, 2 player friendly fire, and it's just plain unforgiving. But I enjoy the hell out if, probably because I've been playing it as a kid and I'm pretty good at it, that's helps a lot, ha
  • Ah, one of the few NES titles that has repeatedly stumped myself as well as all of my friends. I have dedicated many, many a solid effort to besting this game to no avail.

I completely agree with others who say the difficulty wouldn't be bad if the continues weren't finite. I've made it past the Turbo Tunnel I think only once in my life, and it was by accident after getting frustrated from two or three hours of playing with a buddy. I've never used warps (wasn't too aware of them, honestly), and I've never stocked up on extra lives, but I've played the hell out of this game. I also own a pretty sweet Battletoads shirt that I'll have to upload a pic of

Classic game, must play, but boy is it difficult!
  • If you never play past level 3, you never even got to experience that this game is not only a 2.5d beat'mup and a racing rhythm game, but it's also a 2d action platformer. The snake pit level (unless there was another game which did it first) is probably the direct inspiration for the snake block obstacles that started appearing in the super mario games (from super mario world, on)

I agree, and I think that's most people's issue with this game; they can't get past level 3. I've never done it cleanly without cheats or a Game Genie, so I can't say I TRULY know the feeling of triumphing over that bastard of a level, but I have glimpsed further levels...and they are good!

Yup, I clear them as fast as I can and then double tap run to the portal. It always closes right as I jump unto the platform.
