If you never play past level 3, you never even got to experience that this game is not only a 2.5d beat'mup and a racing rhythm game, but it's also a 2d action platformer. The snake pit level (unless there was another game which did it first) some of the later super mario games ripped off from battletoads.
I agree, and I think that's most people's issue with this game; they can't get past level 3. I've never done it cleanly without cheats or a Game Genie, so I can't say I TRULY know the feeling of triumphing over that bastard of a level, but I have glimpsed further levels...and they are good!
Yup, I have played this game since a wee lad and I think maybe once or twice I have made it past the turbo tunnel. I can make it all of the way to the racers without losing a lfe sometimes and then lose all of my lives and continues on the racing part. I have sunk hours and hours into it. There are just some obstacles in games that I can't get past and is the #1 cause for me not completeling a game. I also didn't know about the extra lives cheats or the warps. I had to use the game genie as a kid to get the other levels.
The first warp is also the hardest to reach in time. Personally, I think you are better off skipping it to try and rack up the extra lives. I would also skip the warp on the turbo tunnels, (since it doesn't come till the very end of the speeder bikes course, it doesn't really let you bypass anything if that is a road block for you. better off taking the warp on level 4, and then again on level 6.
In addition to the Level 6 Karnath's Lair snake riding game play showing up in the Snake Block Tower in New Super Mario Bros I also noticed that on Level 12 The Revolution has this psuedo 3d tower level which showed up later in Kirby's Adventure. (Similar gameplay can also be found in Castelian)
Was there another game that had a level with the same game play of level 10, (rat race)? I swear I have seen/played something like that before, where you are racing to beat a rat to a bomb or something, but I know I've never gotten to the level 10 of Batteltoads before.
I have mixed feelings about Battletoads. On the one hand it's a really polished game that while stupidly difficult, can be overcome with practice. On the other hand, it's always stressful no matter how many times you play, and you WILL be playing it a lot because the game makes it artificially difficult to practice its bullcrap level traps due to limited continues. I think if they had given you unlimited continues it would have been a much more enjoyable game to learn how to play, but when it's so restrictive with lives it just comes across as poor design. I managed to get good enough to get to stage 9 without warps, but by then I got burnt out on it and never finished it.
Eh? Battletoads is very generous with regard to lives and continues. You can literally load of with 10+ lives by stage 2, and it's not that difficult to do. Then there's the warps you can utlize to skip one of the hardest levels in the game (stage 7), and on top of that, the game gives you what, at least 3 additional continues, maybe more? I'm also pretty sure there's an easy way to get 5 lives per continue with a code? There are several parts in the game where you literally can get an extra live right at the start of the checkpoint, so you can keep playing that part without fear of a game over.
That's true I guess. Volkmire's inferno is surprisingly pretty nice about 1ups. I was always terrible at juggling the birds in stage 2 for some reason, so I could never take advantage of it.
Most of why I gave up on Battletoads was due to stage 8 actually. I could tear through the entire game without losing a single life, but stage 8 was always so inconsistant for me that I'd get nervous and die a bunch. I feel Battletoads is better when it's doing anything other than platforming. XD
I was also pretty stubborn about not using warps in that game. I know I've given you crap for stuff like this before which makes me feel a bit silly, but to me Battletoads hasn't been beaten unless you beat every stage. That being said though, I probably should have taken advantage of them just to get back to stages I hadn't beaten a bit quicker.
I've been wanting to go back and finish this game at some point, but man, stage 8 really is a big turn off for me. If anyone has some pointers for that stage, I'd love to hear them.

I stage 8 the one that scrolls vertically upward? I don't remember that one giving me a lot of trouble, just take your time and don't rush.
It's pretty easy to get to that stage if you use warps (warp on stage 3 or 4, and the best warp in the game on stage 6), so that would be a quicker way to practice it (or you could just use emulators...).
I agree that warping is total cheese, and when I beat it I played through all the levels. At some point I'm going to do a video of the entire game.
stage 8 is a hard one, i think for the most part im just playing too fast and i end up dying because of that, i have a question though, why do you go through the platforms that you have to manually jump right befor you get to the last checkpoint? sometimes i can breeze past that but rocking back and forth and then jumping an then days like today i just suck and fall through for no reason

I just realized I was remembering seeing this stage from Game Center CX
I've been wanting to go back and finish this game at some point, but man, stage 8 really is a big turn off for me. If anyone has some pointers for that stage, I'd love to hear them.
For stage 8, the most useful thing is to rip the handle of the wall at the very start and use it as a weapon to kill the bots, blobs, and fans. Also just take your time and don't rush
finally beat level 8, its not as hard as i thought it was, i guess the only tips i could give are take yer time and take out all those stupid things that shoot lasers, now level 9 is another thing, that is deff the hardest level so far in the game, the patterns with everything an all the spikes, its just so damn hard, im not gonna give up though
The boss on level 8 is starting to get on my nerves. I keep getting crushed by him. His pattern is not that hard or anything, but sometimes the hit detection is a little wonky and my hits on him don't register if I am too close. Having to go all the way back to the beginning of the level after he defeats me sucks. Sometimes I start rushing through the earlier sections because I am impatient to get to the boss and make some careless errors.
Finally beat robo-manus! I figured out the timing on him is to do a ram charge at him while he's in the air, (at least after he speeds up around hit 15). Now I can get pulverized by the gears on level 9. Onward!
I did a bunch of ramming and then ducking when he would hit the floor, he was pretty easy, it seems like the bosses are simple but the levels suck, those gears are terrible, I got pretty far in the level, the gears were chasing me underwater, I just couldn't get the pattern down and died
Finally made it to the Rat Race on level 10! I actually did pretty good for a first attempt. Made it as far as the 3rd race but the gas puffers did me in. Terra Tubes was terra-bull! At least there was a 1up at the start of the final checkpoint. I died so many times. But at least I know it very well now. For the very last section I try to kill the hammer fish before entering the spike maze, but sometimes he swims away and it can get tedious waiting for him to make his way back to you.
the terra tubes is one of the hardest levels i ever played, i hate those stupid gears, that level is about as far as i got in that game, i took a little break because those last jumps befor the last checkpoint in the turbo tunnel have been getting to me, anyone have any advice on how to do those jumps? sometimes ill do it in one shot and others i just fall through the platforms

The exclaimation point jumps should be handled by staying near the lower edge of the platform where it's widest and pressing jump as you reach the far edge of each platform. Do not try and steer yourself in midair. This is actually one of the few parts that I have never died on.
I loved playing Battletoads as a kid... One thing most people seem to overlook / forget... Warp Zones!!
If I remember there's one in Level 1:
Beat the first 3 guys ASAP and run right
Level 3:
During the crazy car race it's right in front of a barricade
Level ? (Snake Pit)
Jump over a few snakes and spikes
There's another one??
If you play these warp zones well you only have to play like every other level, and before you know it you can almost make it to the last level... Almost
NEVER use the first warp zone. The reason why is that LVL 2 can earn you vital 1UPs. I always use the Snake Pit one because I hate Volkmire's inferno. I can get pretty far in this game but I never beat it. (I can get to LVL 10 or something)

Yeah, the 1-ups in the Tunnell are key.... After I got that 1-up gaining down, I could max-out the score (999,999) but I still can't beat it....

Yup, I clear them as fast as I can and then double tap run to the portal. It always closes right as I jump unto the platform.
Try it with 2 players to clear the baddies faster!

Make sure to kill the left enemy first (faster).

Yup, you pretty much just have to "juggle" the birds over and over again and they will give you tons of 1-ups.
I recently started doing this and it resulted in me making it to that snake level. Before finding that out I couldn't get by the ice stage :-/

Correct. Don't move. Just jump.
