If you're good enough to be able to get to him, you should definitely try again on the same playthrough. You may not have as much health, but you have the advantage now of being able to bring in sub-weapons straight to the second form. (you don't have to re-fight forms you've already defeated when you get back to the boss) Plus, once you beat the second form you still get the health refill for the third fight. (At least the first time you get to the third fight)

On your second attempt you should make sure to bring the fireballs to that fight, as you can score quite a few free hits that way to make up for your diminished health. Playing at low health also forces you to be extra careful, which can lead to better tactics. It took me a very long time, and many many playthroughs before I was ever good enough to beat all three forms in one go. XD

Also if you ever get stuck with a rotating fireball attacking you, you can slash the fireballs with your sword to get rid of them. I happens occasionally.
  • i use to always have another go, but im so bad at that boss and it just ends up pissing me off to the point where i wanna cry an feel defeated so thats usually why i only give it one go lol its just crazy how far they bring you back and then dont refill yer health, next time i play ill try to have at him more than once, where do you get the fire? is it in the last screen befor you get to him? i feel like its right after you get the time stopper and jump down off the platform but i might be wrong, i didnt even think you could use a weapon on him, i had some saved for him actually last night but after beating the first incarnation they all went away

Like I said, you can only bring sub-weapon to later forms if you die and come back. I don't remember exactly where the fire is, but you should try and find it as it makes the first form really easy too. At the first form if you have fire and a decent amount of ammo, you can jump on the middle pillar right away, and shoot fire while jumping to hit the target point blank with every flame for about four points of damage. If you can do that and slash your sword a few times in-between flame shots, you can take him out super fast. To be honest, I actually don't know how to fight the first form without that. XD

  • that deff sounds effective, i just jump and hit him from the middle platform until i cant anymore, then i jump over as high as i can on the wall, wait for him to get to the wall and jump over, hit the middle thing an repeat, if you jump up high enough he cant hit you
  • Yeah that's what you're supposed to do on the first form if you don't have any powerups, you can get all the way up the wall and jump over him when he gets close enough without being hit.

Even the dreaded onslaught jump in 6-2 I have a consistent strategy for now that makes it pretty easy. That being said though, getting good at the game was NOT easy. It is a brutal game to learn, and I'm not about to forget how much trouble I had at first.

I can give you some pointers for the final form of the final boss.

    a) You want to be more focused on what's above you than what you're attacking. Making sure you don't get hit by projectiles is the most important part of the fight.

    b) Best to my knowledge there's no way to dodge the head when it falls off. Just take the hit rather than try to jump over it and risk getting hit by the more powerful projectiles.

    c) There's a nice trick in this game that's really useful at this boss. When you jump and attack, you can cancel the attack animation by pressing down. This means that while attacking and pressing down at roughly the same time in the air, you can slash your sword more times than you're really supposed to. I only discovered this recently, and it has made the last form of the final boss way easier. That being said though, he's not too terribly difficult anyways so long as you're cautious about not getting hit. The glitch makes things easier, but it's not really necessary.

Good luck! Hopefully you can knock this game out of the park!

Amazing; thank you for this! I've been making it to 6-3 with minimal trouble, and I'm getting close to making it to the boss fight in decent shape each time.

This advice is excellent, thank you for sharing your Ninja Gaiden wisdom and experience!
  • i finally just beat this game, i feel on top of the world right now, thanks for the tips on the final boss, the fire weapon really helped me on the second to last boss, i got a tip for the final boss, get the throwing star that boomerangs, one hit on the body an the piece will come off, i think it was one hit on the tail too
  • I certainly have some history with Ninja Gaiden. Had it as a kid, never got through act 5. I remember getting frustrated with the game, but never to the point of rage inducement. Gave it a casual shot once or twice in high school, but ended up packing it up along with the rest of my games before heading off to college.

Fast forward to the summer after college graduation. I took some time off that summer before starting real life, and ended up staying with one of my college buddies in Boston for a few weeks. Around the beginning of the second week, I got an itch to start beating some of those NES games that I was never able to master. I booted up an emulator, but it didn't quite do it for me. So I ended up venturing out to a local retro store and picked up a Toploader, two controllers, Contra, TMNT3, and Ninja Gaiden.

I ended up getting the hang of Contra to the point where I could beat it without the Konami code. My buddy and I played a decent amount of TMNT3 - don't think we ended up finishing it. But Ninja Gaiden was the highlight of the bunch. It was at the very top of my list of games I wanted to beat from my childhood, and seeing as my buddy was at work during the day, I had all the time in the world to get it done. Threw it in, booted it up, and rolled through the first few acts. I was stoked - I remember it being so hard as a kid. Maybe I just sucked at video games back then, and it really wasn't as challenging as I thought. I had some minor difficulty with act 5, but ended up making it into act 6 for the first time.

    Then the rage came.

To this day, I can't recall another moment where I've yelled at the top of my lungs at a video game (or anything, really), specifically at pixelated birds. I've never thrown a controller in my life, but it almost happened on multiple occasions (once again, at the birds). To top that, I felt like I was going insane during certain points of the last act. I would get my routine down PERFECTLY for most of the level, then make a minor error and die. Nail the same routine, small error, dead. Run routine, screw up at an easy part. Start again. But I got through it. Of course, I can't put into words the amount of hatred that spewed out of me when I died at the second to last boss on 6-5 and had to start THE ENTIRE ACT OVER.

But several hours (and beers) later, I ended up beating it. And all was well in the world. To be honest, that week of reliving those NES titles from my childhood definitely got me started into this hobby. I still love the game, and have ran through it a few more times since then. But I'll never have any love for those damn birds.

Holy hell, congrats dude! This is an epic achievement!

I'm still grinding through Act VI and getting sent back during the boss fight(s). Thank you for the tip with the throwing star; that actually helps immensely! I want this game done and beaten this weekend!

Oh you'll know when I finally complete it sir, lol

I'm not even contemplating the other games until this one is knocked off.
  • UPDATE!

So the good news is I can make it to 6-2 in about 25 minutes now; this game is a blast when you're in shape with it and get a good rhythm going.

BUT...I'm officially getting stuck on 6-2 at the part with the jetpack guys not too far in. I can get to the spin attack, but they keep catching me and bumping me into pits. Is there an actual strategy for these guys, or is it just basically "gun it and hope for the best"? I was making it to 6-3 like butter the other day, but now I keep getting hung up on that part.

Your help and tips have been absolutely amazing thus far my fellow NA-ers; I want to finish this game once and for all!
  • my strategy is from the pillar where the dog is, jump onto the next one killing the guy, jump to the next one when the guy is facing you so you can get him with his back turned on the corner, right then one of the jetpack guys will come flying by from the left, jump real quick up and kill him, dont jump forward or anything just straight up, if you get it right another one wont spawn, now jump to the next platform and there will be another jetpack guy so get ready to jump an kill him, sometimes there are two of them, once you ot them killed get the spinning jump powerup and gun it lol the only hard part about the jetpack guys is if you do get hit they start spawning and will overwhelm you, i wish i could just video tape myself doing it to show you how simple it could be done, but like you said you need to get into a groove to do it with ease just like every other part of the game, that screen can be the hardest part of the level if you are out of funk

I totally understand what you're describing here, man; thank you so much!

My problem is I keep triggering their respawning. I need to practice a strategy like you said above, and start jumping STRAIGHT UP instead of trying to power through. I know you beat this game recently, and I really appreciate you taking the time to help a fellow NA-er out!

That goes for everyone who has helped so far; thank you!
  • no problem man, whatever i can do to help, people have been helping me out here alot recently, i dont really like looking at youtube for these kinda things, i feel like its cheating i guess lol word of mouth was always the way to go
  • There's only so much you can learn from YouTube; I find infinite more wisdom from those who've just completed a game you're playing

What I find amazing is the amount of muscle memory I've built up just playing this game for the last month or so. I'm now getting to 6-2 from the start in less than 25 minutes, and I absolutely haul through the first 5 acts. Now if I could just do that for act 6, I'd be all set!

Playing a bit more tonight and seeing if I get lucky
  • Every get to the point where you play a game so much, that you start sucking worse than when you first started playing it? That's what's happening to me today. I got a game over on 4-2, and decided to call it quits. I rarely even get my first game over until 5-3 at this point, so I quit while I was way ahead today, lmao.

Today is not the day to attempt to complete Ninja Gaiden.
  • Lolol that's the worst feeling ever, that game has brought me down to some of the lowest points in my life
  • It's rather frustrating, because I wanted to complete it this weekend lol. I might give it another shot in a bit, but if it's anything like earlier I'm going to need to switch to another game for today.
  • Making it to the boss fight fairly consistently now.

Now the challenge is learning the boss patterns and finishing this damn game!
  • which incarnation of the final boss? the second one is deff the hardest

  • Originally posted by: wesofthedead

Yup, number 2 and those damn fireballs, lmao. I remember about watching where you're jumping instead of worrying about the fireballs, but I'll be damned if I'm not having a panic attack by the time I reach the damn boss

  • get the weapon that shoots the fire up to the air, i couldnt beat him until i got that, made it so much easier, someone here reccomended me to do that here lol
  • If I can find and keep it long enough, lmao!

I also heard if you can manage the spin jump attack, you're more or less golden against any and all bosses...
  • I've gotten pretty good at making it to any boss with the spin attack now, except for the final one....I still cannot beat the 2nd form of the final boss. I just can't get used to dodging his fire attack and still wind up getting any attacks in. Gave it another try last night but failed at the boss once and gave up.

Definitely the hardest boss in the trilogy. Tiny hitbox. I try and get to him with full fire, spam him, and hope I can take the last of his energy before dying. Still the only boss I have to play twice to defeat. NG 2 and 3 I can kill all the forms with one life if I have a good run.
  • I also had something happen to me last night that I've never seen before. The World 4 boss, somehow I did something that caused a 3rd hopping statue to form, and the boss health bar replenished. I've probably played this boss 50 times and never seen that happen before.
  • I've been at said second to last boss since Thanksgiving; you're not alone, sir.

I still pop this one in every couple of weeks, and I can still make it to Act VI in about 25 minutes with minimal effort. Then, it's like hitting a brick wall, lol.
  • I hope I don't deviate too far off topic with the original intent of this topic, but I've honestly never thoroughly played the NES Ninja Gaidens. Played them? Sure. Dedicated hours to 1-3 on the NES? Nope.

Just how different are the NES originals compared to the ports we got in Ninja Gaiden Trilogy? I often hear the NES versions play better. I personally think the SNES ports play fine, but I don't really have the capacity to compare the ports since I never really played the NES ones thoroughly. So, if anyone has played both NES/SNES versions religiously, I'm curious to hear your 2 cents. I know the lightning was taken out in the SNES port of NGII I think it was (for whatever reason), but is the overall gameplay for NG 1-3 really that different/worse in Ninja Gaiden Trilogy?
  • In the case of Ninja Gaiden the juice is worth the squeeze. Keep at it.
