I'm restarting my effort. I started back in September 2013 and since that point I have lost 86 pounds. I was lower, but I began to plateau and get tired of it, so I took two weeks off (although you could argue I took more time off) and am back at it starting today. I had this plan to restart today a few weeks back. I would have started on the 1st, but since it was in the middle of the week I wanted to begin on a Monday.
So I may not post updates here, but from time to time I'm sure I'll chime in and let people know where I'm at. 86 pounds is nothing to sneeze at, but I need to get rid or more.
I think the response to this thread is awesome. When I lost 40lbs last year I pretty much did it alone. Im a bit of a loner, so it wasn't that bad. But having support, and different ideas and suggestions will for sure help me even more. Really looking forward to seeing everyones progress and helping each other out.
Just keep in mind guys and gals, that you have to start somewhere. Try not to get discouraged, but also try not to get complacent. On your normal routine if you eat 3 donuts for breakfast, a cheese burger for lunch and half a pizza for dinner and don't exercise at all, you can see results simply by changing 3 donuts to a banana, the cheeseburger to a grilled chicken sandwich, and eating 4 slices of pizza instead of 6. Throw in 15 mins of physical activity and you will start to see the weight come off. Perhaps, slowly, but it will happen. And I promise you that you will feel better. It takes a 3-4 weeks to really set in. But once you are in, it becomes just as routine to eat healthy and do some exercise as it did to eat bad and do no exercise.
What I'm trying to deal with is that a can of Mt Dew is 170 calories and I drink 2-3 cans or more a day most of the time. I've been off the dew for a while since I had a sore throat and fizzy drinks burn going down...but I get that craving again...I suppose that means I'll have to cut out more foods to support my addiction. What a pain in the ass lol. I guess I could cut it to 2 a day...I think I could live with that.
As for DDR I guess I'm going to have to break out my Mario Mix DDR for the GC since that's the only DDR with mat I own.
Im fairly active due to the nature of my work. My biggest set back would be my choice of beverage (pops) and also portion control. I eat whatever, whenever. I forget that I'm not that 15 year old that can do this without consequences. If one goes by what portion sizes are it's actually quite surprising, at least it was to me.

What about drinking Diet Mt Dew as a substitute? Does anyone else in your family drink Mt. Dew? If not, I'd strongly recommend clearing out all the Mt Dew out of your house. You can't act on a craving if it isn't readily available. Cutting out the sugery drinks would be a big step towards meeting your weight loss goals.

I would if I could stand the taste of it but something just tastes wrong with diet pop. And yeah if it wasn't within reach I wouldn't drink it...but I go through withdrawl if I don't get my fix...I get bad headaches and more pissed off then usual. I think going cold turkey isn't going to work...I'll start by cutting down to two a day...then maybe one a day...then one a week?

Are you a fan of coffee or espresso by chance GamerGirl?
That would certainly help with the caffeine headaches, has zero calories and is heavenly in the morning.

I used to drink only Coke, so maybe I can help a tad? I can totally relate to your post. I hate any diet sodas. For me, it went from drinking 2-5 Cokes a day, to tasting that Brisk Lemonade and switching to that only. After that, Coke just wasn't good anymore somehow, even if that was all I drank for most of my life! I hate anything fizzy now.
Then I started trying to lose weight last month (I didn't have much to go, I was only at 120 and aiming for 100-110lbs, already at 112lbs) so I kinda had to cut the lemonade if I wanted to still be able to eat a decent amount, haha! It was hard at first, but then I decided that it would be good to drink 8-10 cups of water a day as is suggested. I found that if I prioritize the water, I hardly even want the lemonade or any other sweet drinks. I just don't feel thirsty so I don't really want it. Maybe that could help you or others here trying to cut on soda? Make sure to drink plenty of water first thing in the morning and then throughout the day. Even if it doesn't totally kill your need for soda, you'll at least be very well hydrated and feel fuller.
pretty sure I'm the fattest here, not proud. But i planned on getting this shit in full gear. the only thing worse than being fat, is losing it all, then gaining it back. It sucks monkey f*ck. anywho, i'm in. I dont want to win shit. I just want to lose weight.
Don't worry, if you're the fattest then that means weight loss will be a lot easier for you. It's easier to lose 50 pounds at 400 or more than it is at 300, or 250.
There's nothing to win, the points are there just to encourage those who need a little "competition" to get going. If you want to be serious about going on a diet I can be more serious with you! I'm only here to help and I hope I can help as best I could.
Tell me a little story about your habits in eating, hanging out and what kind of schedule you have in life overall. Also, let me know if your family and friends are supportive of you losing weight (e.g. are they gonna eat snacks in front of you, or are they gonna at least hide it from you!)
I can put you on a super flexible diet that will lose you about 1 to 1.5 pounds a week and you'll still be able to eat what you love, and only IF you're serious.
DUDE, thank you so much for the support. I honestly mean that. The thing is though, I have no problems losing weight. I do it every year, and drop usually 50 lbs every year. No fads, just calorie/fat/sodium watching, and 30 mins of excercise. But my old habits always kick in, which I'm well aware of, are my problems. I hate paying for food, so I usually eat for free from work, and I drink A LOT. Some might be able to tell by my posts. in 2006, I went from 275 to 175, and I felt great and looked better. After 2 years I was back up to 250, then eventually got to 318 (even though I know I hit higher than that) It sucks. One thing no one teaches you when you lose weight, is that EVERYONE around you looks up to you and you inspire them, so when you lose it all, then gain it back, all of a sudden, you failed not just you, but them. It was so much easier when no one was watching. Now, it's like all eyes on me, am I gonna do it again, what happened, oh he must've faked it. All things that go through my head.
The biggest problem, of all that said, is I live in a hotel room. I can eat lean cuisines all day, but to really appreciate the healthier food you eat, MUST be prepared by you. I dont have that option here. I cant get out of work and grill up a chicken breast, and cook some brown rice. Or make some veggie laden stir fry. Or prepare lighter options to comfort foods, because I dont have an oven, large fridge, stove top. I'm well aware of this, and it's my primary reason to get outta debt, and get my own place again. When I was able to lose the 100 lbs with relative ease. i can still lose weight, but it is trickier, and can still be done. I hate to say I'm an expert of dieting, but after 9 years, I've got it down pat. The maintaining is the hard part, and I really like beer.

I had a feeling someone was going to bring up water...I know i'm picky as hell but...I can't stand the no taste of water...plus...when I drink it I get even more thirsty? idk how that works but yeah...
It might work for some people but I doubt it would work for me. It's a combo of sugar, fizzy and caffene that have me addicted to it.
@Commander Santa: I love caffene, but hate coffee. Go figure right?

Again, I know exactly what you mean. I actually hated the taste of water. Everybody says it tastes nothing but I jut can't agree!! I had the same more thirty feeling too. After a week of forcing myself to drink it though, it's all fine. Goes down easy and it does hydrate. Just hard to start, but everyone can do it really easy, I'm pretty sure.

The hardest thing about dieting and making changes is getting used to healthy things. Obviously there are gonna be things that you just don't like and can't eat or drink. But a lot of stuff it is just retraining your brain and breaking the cycle. Like water for instance, ive I have heard of people saying when they drink it it makes them thirstier. That is likely because you are dehydrated and it just hydrates you better. Most people are dehydrated. Maybe start with getting the fruity mio drops to put in your water. Give it a little taste, and taper off of that gradually. Or use fresh lemon and lime. Lemon is a good calorie burner and helps detox you as well.
Oh hey, I think I might just join in! I need to put new batteries in my Wii Fit to weigh myself, though, so I can't join quite yet. Too much sitting at an office chair for work has really worked its evils upon me~

I never ever ever drink sodas flavored with highfructose corn syrup, except in rare cases if I'm at a party somewhere and the host didn't provide anything diet. Stopped drinking regular soda over a decade ago.
I don't really like Diet Coke (although I drink it at restaurants because half the time it's all they have) but a few years ago I got totally hooked on Pepsi Max. 69mg caffine, zero calories. I can easily do a case (24 cans) of that stuff a week. Give it a try.
Diet DrPepper also tastes closer to a real soda as well. Some sodas including DrPepper now have a "ten" calorie variety that is supposedly more like a real soda. I think the advertising for DP Ten is a bit sexist but they taste good.
Then again my mom raised me since I was a kid on diet Kool-Aid. Perhaps if you've been consuming artificial sweeteners all your life, you may not notice it much. Newer sweeteners like Splenda and Stevia don't have a bitter after-taste like older synthetics like Saccarin and Aspertame do.
Get some artificial sweetener packs from like a restaurant somewhere, dissolve in a bit of water or tea, and taste the difference beetween them. Find one you can tolerate the flavor of and buy beverages sweetened with it.

Water is great. Even with diet soda you can dehydrate yourself. I've got a man sized stomach and sometimes when I just start feeling like crap overall, I'll get a 22oz plastic cup from the pantry and fill it up 2 or 3 times or until I feel full. About 20-30 minutes later I'll pee it all out and afterwords my sense of well being is somehow 1000x better because I've flushed the toxins from my body.
Back in 2008, I worked in a hot sweaty warehouse with zero ventallation building municipal recycle bins for my city. I carried around a half-gallon water bottle and filled it about 6 times a day because I sweat so much. I actually felt great at the end of the day believe it or not, and the chronic insomnia I've dealt with most of my life virtually disappeared during this time.
Also anyone considering any form of exercize should get used to drinking lots of water. If you're doing running or biking, carry a bottle with you and make sure there's places aong the way where you can refill it. Getting dehydrated is no fun at all.
I love water, and drink it over and over again, throughout the day. I hate that the new bus system in my city in Taiwan doesn't allow drinks, making it miserable since I need to ride for 40 minutes - 120 minutes (depending on the time of day and transfer time). For a ride that long, I need to be sipping on water or I will feel dehydrated. Yeah, ex-mayor, you sucked, stealing everyone's money and then giving us a shitty transportation system in return.
My philosophy is that the pee needs to be clear or it ain't good.
Im in, This will help with tracking alot, one of my goals for the beginning of this year was attempting gaming based weight loss and to write about my experience. Lots of Wii Fit and DDR in my future, I am excited to do this as a community.
Does that stuff actually work as a workout? I asked before in this thread but I guess I got ignored..
My suggestion is to use wii fit for the Yoga and Strength training and to use ddr as a cardio replacement because i dont like the cardio wii fit offers, but that's my 2 cents.

A really good way to get around the no taste of water is peppermint oil, I know that has help my family curb thier appetite as well. Id imagine you could use any kind of flavored oil though.
Edit: didn't mean to double post, will pay more attention next time just got excited lol.
So today I've already been to the gym 3 times for the week, 2 at my gym and one local to where I work. At the final one a dude said I looked "swol" haha.

Peppermint promotes good digestion too. So win win.

If you have a 360 with Kinect I know they had some decent workout games that should be dirt cheap.
So I may not post updates here, but from time to time I'm sure I'll chime in and let people know where I'm at. 86 pounds is nothing to sneeze at, but I need to get rid or more.
We can do it !
As for DDR I guess I'm going to have to break out my Mario Mix DDR for the GC since that's the only DDR with mat I own.

As for DDR I guess I'm going to have to break out my Mario Mix DDR for the GC since that's the only DDR with mat I own.

My philosophy is that the pee needs to be clear or it ain't good.

Peppermint promotes good digestion too. So win win.
P.S. writing this from the gym! Get up guys and work out a bit. 5 minutes, 10, 20...anything!
We can lose a lot of weight just by dedicating a small portion of our NintendoAge time to working out.
