  • Strap a couple joysticks to an exercise bike / treadmill and play games while working out? Your feet do nothing while gaming so put your lower body to work whilst grinding that RPG!

I haven't tried it but the treadmill bit walking with a game controller and maintaining a steady cadence whilst making precision jumps would require a lot of coordination.

Just a thought. I don't have a treadmill and all my bikes are the go-outside-and-ride-around-the-block type. Strapping a virtual boy to my head whilst riding around the block would probably not be wise...

Also is there some kind of way to rig a Dance Pad to a Wii-U for Wii DDR? Do the Mayflash adapters work for this?

Yes, provided it's real boxing, not jsut Mike Tyson's Punchout.

  • Are there other oils that help? Not a fan of peppermint...also when you say oils...you don't mean extracts used for baking do you?

I went out and bought some tea with lemonade in it since I like it...less calories then mt dew, and it tastes good. Just miss the fizzy...blah.
  • I know a lot of people don't care for them but any veggie for the most part is a good way to snack.. Also drink water when you feel a bit hungry. It sucks for the first few days but once your body starts to get used to it it gets better.
  • Oils and extracts are not the same, to my knowledge, although I could be wrong about this. I beleive my family gets thier oil from a company called essential oils, but I know there are other places too. Your best bet would to be a natural foods store, ill dig around and see if i can find an online retailer for a reasonable price. Side note are we supposed to upload our before pictures to this thread?
  • Wow! We hit 31 members! really awesome guys.

Friday is almost upon us and that means it's almost time for our first weekly weigh in. Don't worry if you guys put on a pound or two since then. Your body needs to get used to your change and is in "panic" mode right now so it's holding onto everything you eat.

If you're still eating junk though, c'mon! There's a ton of delicious alternatives. You just need to pass a couple days for your stomach to get used to not eating junk! I know you can do it, just fight!

Did you know that losing just 15 pounds (if you're obese) reduces your risk of type-2 diabetes by 70%!?! This isn't just for fun guys, this is serious stuff, so let's treat it that way!

    Friday, here we come

I'm not scared of the scale, and neither should you. I'm getting ready to make a TON of recipe posts, work out posts, and maybe a video next time I go to the gym tonight.

You could check into something like a SodaStream where you can carbonate anything to make it fizzy?

Also, maybe try seltzer water, but that takes some getting used to taste-wise.

  • Hey Guys,

Here is something I did. Im sure its not for everyone but it has helped me.

When I was in my late teens early 20s, I almost hit 300lbs. Finally, I decided to do something about it. I wrote out a list of all the stuff I wouldnt eat and put it on my fridge. Needless to say it helped me get down to around 210. Im 30 now with 3 kids and a video game store, life is different and busy.

However this time I didnt let it get that far out of hand. 236 was enough. On Jan 1st, I wrote another list.

    No Carbonated Drinks

No Fast Food (Mcdonalds, Wendys Tims Hortons....ect.)

    No Chips (My Fave)

I decided to weigh myself this morning and I'm down 3lbs. Still a good ways to go for the 16lbs I want to lose during the challenge but off to a good start.

I promised my kids I wouldn't cheat off of the list so I know I won't. Already passed a Wendy's drive through temptation while having to get food for others.....Felt great not caving this time and doing the right thing by passing.

Scary thing for me....The list is for the entire year!

    Good Luck NA Peeps,

    Ken

    Yeah, it's montage time!

  • Go HCLF Vegan. Just sayin'.

    Good luck everyone!
  • Is it too late to join in on this?
  • I figured it out and signed up. I still have a bunch of baby weight to lose that I failed at losing for the last 4 years... lol. I went from 150 to 250 lbs and got down to 179 before winter started back up. I'm way far from my goal weight of 130.
  • If I can get to the gyme at least 5 days of the week (most likely 2 boxing conditioning classes, 2 workout sessions and possibly a kickboxing conditioning class), that should help.

I've already cut out beer 2 months ago. If I can eliminate fatty foods and sweets, I should be able to hover a bit below 170.

I hope everyone can reach their goals but more importantly, never give up even after the 90 days!
  • Since food and nutrition is such a big part of dieting and weight loss, I invite and encourage anyone interested in learning more to join me in this edX guided course. It's 8 weeks long and officially starts on January 12. Let me know if you sign up, it would be cool if we could all learn something together.

Also, I'd like to leave this article I found interesting, but as with most things needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

    http://vitals.lifehacker.com/exercise-vs-diet-which-is-more-important-for-weight-l-1677532039/+stephentotilo

Lastly, good luck with your goals.
  • 1 day before I begin asking for your guys' weights again! Remember to always use the same scale guys. Even if your scale is wrong, at least it's consistently wrong so you know how much weight you're losing.

Our first weekly challenge is coming tomorrow! Man, this is so exciting I really want everyone to take a part in this
  • Been feeling a little (a lot) under the weather this week. So exercise has been out of the question. I didn't even go bowling last night for my Wednesday night league, just stayed home a slept.

The diet is on though. Nutrigrain bar for breakfast and a salad coming up for lunch! And oh yeah, drinking water instead of soft drinks!

Honestly, the liquid intake is going to be the toughest for me. I don't mind healthy foods at all, but I HATE diet drinks. For the past year I've had at least 1 soda per day at work (and usually an additional soda at lunch). I'll be sticking to water and fruit juice for the duration.

And remember guys and gals, it's not just about dropping weight, it's about being healthy and maintaining the loss.

    Good luck everyone, stay strong!
  • http://www.fitbit.com/aria - Go get this scale. With automatic wifi uploading you don't have to write down weight if you are tracking. Also handles multiple people in the house automatically. I find I get on it more frequently which helps with ignoring the normal small fluctuations.

I use my fitbit app to track my weight every single day. Too bad looking at the scale sucks lol.

  • It doesn't suck! That number isn't there to depress you, it's there to motivate you.

I have 315 reasons to lose weight! Hopefully this Friday I'll have only 311 reasons!

I've been off the dew for a while since I had a sore throat and fizzy drinks burn going down...but I get that craving again...I suppose that means I'll have to cut out more foods to support my addiction. What a pain in the ass lol. I guess I could cut it to 2 a day...I think I could live with that.

As for DDR I guess I'm going to have to break out my Mario Mix DDR for the GC since that's the only DDR with mat I own.

I used to drink only Coke, so maybe I can help a tad? I can totally relate to your post. I hate any diet sodas. For me, it went from drinking 2-5 Cokes a day, to tasting that Brisk Lemonade and switching to that only. After that, Coke just wasn't good anymore somehow, even if that was all I drank for most of my life! I hate anything fizzy now.

Then I started trying to lose weight last month (I didn't have much to go, I was only at 120 and aiming for 100-110lbs, already at 112lbs) so I kinda had to cut the lemonade if I wanted to still be able to eat a decent amount, haha! It was hard at first, but then I decided that it would be good to drink 8-10 cups of water a day as is suggested. I found that if I prioritize the water, I hardly even want the lemonade or any other sweet drinks. I just don't feel thirsty so I don't really want it. Maybe that could help you or others here trying to cut on soda? Make sure to drink plenty of water first thing in the morning and then throughout the day. Even if it doesn't totally kill your need for soda, you'll at least be very well hydrated and feel fuller.

I had a feeling someone was going to bring up water...I know i'm picky as hell but...I can't stand the no taste of water...plus...when I drink it I get even more thirsty? idk how that works but yeah...

It might work for some people but I doubt it would work for me. It's a combo of sugar, fizzy and caffene that have me addicted to it.

@Commander Santa: I love caffene, but hate coffee. Go figure right?

You get more thirsty drinking water because you are dehydrated. It takes weeks for your body to readjust to the increase of water intake and to rehydrate itself. Water is the #1 more important thing you need in weight loss. It curbs hunger (many times when you are hungry, your body is actually craving water) and it gives your muscles what they need to be fit. Healthy muscle is the key to burning fat, not just cardio (common mistake by people).

So, if anyone struggles with weight loss, here are the best tips I can give you (source, my wife owns a gym, is certified in Personal Training, Nutrition, EMT, and others I forget). Also, she lost 40 pounds last year after having a baby.

-Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Your body needs it! Muscles need water to become stronger and being dehydrated and working out can cause injury to your body. Also, gradually (and i mean gradually) increase your fiber. This will help you a TON as you increase your water intake and help stop hunger cravings!

-Use the interwebs to find out how many calories you need to consume per day to achieve healthy weight loss. Losing too fast can actaully damage you body because it will go into starvation mode and burn muscle before fat. There are sites that you enter you creds (start weight, target wieght, height, age, etc)  and it spits out calories to consume and how long you need to be on your diet to achieve your target weight. Spread these calories out between 3 meals and 2 snacks. Be mindful of what calories you put in your body. As my wife calls them, "empty calories"  (such as candy and pop) offer no other nutrients in those calories. An apple goes a lot further than twinkie.

-Do more than just cardio, lift weights as well. You won't "bulk up" like the hulk, I promise (#1 reason women don't lift). Start with light weights and go easy. Muscle building is key to fat burning. Healthy muscle can burn fat on its own even while you are not working out. Don't do the same exercises everyday. When you work out, your muscles rip and tear and they need time to heal. So if you do arms on Monday, rest them until about Thursday. Also, look at taking a day off and do some yoga and make sure you take a rest day (like on Sunday). If you go at it too hard, you will burn out and give up. Trust, this is what happens to me. I never learn. Hopefully this time, I finally will. Once it becomes a part of your life, you can start challenging your body more, but not until you are in shape. If you don't know how to use a machine or don't know how to use the free weights, ask the gym owner or the employees (or do some research online). These people will teach you the proper lifting techniques you get the most out of your workout AND YOU DON"T HURT YOURSELF!!! Also, this is where buying some personal training sessions can really benefit you, because they will teach you how to do excercises and how to use the weights.

-Don't be afraid to have a "splurge day" every once in a while. If you completely cut out the food you love, you are doomed to fail. It's ok to have a beer, or some chips, or pizza, or ice cream every couple of weeks as a reward for your hard work. Just don't down the entire 6 pack of beer or the entire bag of chips. People that complelely cut out favorite food just because they are "bad for you" are most likely to give up when they don't see immediate results and go back to this comfort food.

I'm sure there is a lot more advice\rumors my wife has told me over the years that I have forgotten, but these were the key points in her's and her's fathers weight loss journey that made them successful in shedding a lot of weight in a few months. I wish all of you the best of luck and I am hoping that this thread gets me more motivated to shed some weight I need to lose as well. I'm finging out with 1.5 years old, I'm not as young as I once was.

    GOOD LUCK!!

Also, to maybe bring the thread full circle back around to gaming, maybe you can organize some "game nights" with some friendly challenges on Nintendo games that make you work out, such as Track and Field and Wii Fit. Both of those games are killer workouts. I played track and field a few weeks back and my legs burned for days!

Be careful with juices and sport drinks. Juice is great because of the many nutrients you get, but remember, 1 8 oz glass of orange juice is the equivelant of 2 oranges! AND, you actaully lose some stuff drinking juice instead of eating the actaul fruit, such as fiber. Fiber is important in weight lose and curbing hunger. Also, make sure it is 100% juice.

Sport drinks and juice also contain a lot of sugar. Sugar is important to consume, but getting too much will have a reverse effect. Try to limit juice to 1 8 oz glass a day and sport drinks to about 8 ozs after a work out. I usually have mine with breakfast.

Also, I would avoid diet sodas. They are just not good for you at all. You are better off with the real deal with real sugar. Anything that is "artificial" should probably just be avoided.

Here is a chart that compares juices to soda:

    http://www.hookedonjuice.com/

Obviosuly, juices have more "healthy" ingredients, but too much sugar will kill a diet.

I used to hate the taste of water, but I have grown to drink it.  Here are my suggesstions for this:

Wal-Mart has this water enhancer that is like orange Crush soda.  One hard squirt per class and you don't even know it is water.  I still use this two years later.

Vitamin Water Zero.  No calories and nio sugar.  The squeezed flavor tastes just like lemonade.

  • Started this at 308 lbs (January 2). Today I am 303 lbs.

I am doing a program with a company I sell products for. I don't want to violate any rules so I will leave it at that unless it is ok to talk about. Anyways I was 313 lbs. in June of 2013. Started the program and got down to 253 lbs. by Sept of 2013. I kept the weight off until March of 2014 when I gradually started gaining back. From April to December I put nearly everything back on and the goal now is to lose not quite as much, but to keep it off for good.

    Wishing everyone good luck.

My advice is no fried foods, limited sugar, and lots of water.
  • so im really grumpy, i tweak my back not really sure how, but unless i can get it to go away my diet is going to be the only thing that ill be doing for now, slowing my weight loss. what really sucks is im the only one that prepares food in my house, hopefully if i can push myself to manage that ill be able to push myself to exercise a little.

Any idea what the name of the orange one is? I like Crush soda from time to time...

  • Not sure if you guys want to just throw me in there for your own reference, but I've dropped nearly 30 pounds in the last few months.
  • I don't need to loose weight, but wanted to come in to support you guys and maybe help with a few tips.

My gf and I go on daily 2 mile walks. Not only is it healthy, but it gives us quality time together with no tvs/phones/games. That is something that has helped us physically and our relationship. This is just through our neighborhood.

I drink up to 100 oz of water a day due to the physical nature of my job. One thing that has helped me do that is timing when i should have a bottle of water. I do this:

Start of work - first break (930 am)- 16 oz of water

    Break - lunch- 16 oz

    Lunch-16 oz

After lunch- end of day -16 oz

    16 oz before dinner

16 before bed ( not recommended for those who have difficulty sleeping)

    Hopefully some of that helps.

Good luck guys keep it up!
