One piece of advice I received from a nuitritionist and personal trainer I went to back when I lost much of my weight is that spreading what you eat out during the day is better than eating twice or three meals a day. They recommended six small meals and snacks spread at three hour intervals. What that does is it keeps something in your stomach so you're not tempted to overeat all at once. It also keeps your body from going into panic energy storage mode and lowering your metabolism.
I don't think anyone mentioned this yet, but I would recommend everyone keep a food log for a week of what they eat. Write down everything you put in your mouth and at what time, then go back and look up the nutritional information. The log will tell you exactly what you're ingesting and where you can improve. You'd be surprised how much we all underestimate our calorie intake.
When I lost a lot of weight a few years ago, I had great success with a low sugar/low carbohydrate diet. Before I started I wasn't eating junk food on regular occassions, I was cooking my own food, and I worked out regularly, but I was eating a lot of bread and pasta and serving myself large portions at meal time. Cutting out carbs and sugar was tough, a lot of processed and "low fat" food has sugar and carbs to enchance the taste. I switched the breads that were high in indigestible dietary fiber like flax bread, and kicked "low fat" food to the curb for food naturally low in sugar. I even went back to using cream in my coffee.
One other thing I recommend is for everyone here to make changes to their diet gradually. When I was dieting, I first changed my eating habits at dinner/night time, then a few weeks later tackled lunch, then breakfast. It kept the worst of the hunger pangs away and let my body adjust to the gradual phase in rather than the all-at-once shock of my prior attempts.
I also heard that you shouldn't eat less than 2 hours before you go to bed.
Yep! Just post them here and I'll update it. I may switch over to a weekly google form though to make things easier. I'm also switching over to a private topic later tonight.
Didn't join a gym, but as stated, I have a gym in my garage. 2 miles on the treadmill today. Weight training tomorrow. Still nothing but water all week.

Nice dude! I've been trying to drink a lot more water too. If you get in the habit it just becomes normal, just gotta get past the hump.

Yeah thats what I posted the other night. The mega water challenge will be easy for me. Water is all I drink anyways. I drink maybe 1 soda a month and sometimes not even that. Don't drink Coffee or tea because I can't handle caffiene. Rarely drink juice or even milk. So its water for me 98% of the time. You can put lemon or lime in it, or even cucumbers. I go through around 8-10 bottles a day.
Yesterday and today I started drinking water flavored with that Crush drink mix someone on here told me about. It's...ok. Better then plain water but it has a nasty chemical aftertaste, most likely from the arificial sweetners. I'm starting at 16 oz's and I'll slowly add more till I get up to that 8 glasses a day crap. Not a fan of it.
I'm also actually eating veggies at dinner, usually when mom makes them I pass them up because they taste like shit but...I'm choking them down.
I was slightly bad today...went to Wendy's and ate two of their chicken montery jack sandwiches...so many calories! I went over my limit today...but I guess this was my skip day.

If you're not eating anything you like, you're probably not going to make much progress or undo it after you're done. Are there really no veggies you could eat in a way you would like? Even if your mom does the cooking, you can ask her to make less for you so you can make your own. I'm not a big veggie fan myself, but I eat potatoes and carrots a lot with a little bit of butter, that I love. Apples and bananas for fruits, mainly. I try to make up for the rest of the vitamins I need in other things, simply.

This exactly. It isn't humanly possible for someone to be successful on a diet if you hate EVERYTHING you eat. There are tons of fruits, veggies, and healthier options out there. Just gotta keep trying stuff till you find something you like. And it ijust just about eating veggies or salads. Avoiding deep friend foods and soft drinks will do wonders even if everything else you eat is less than desirable for a diet.

Well I like some like carrots and potatos like you...she makes those sometimes but dad likes green veggies so it's usually green crap.
Fruit wise I love apples but they don't love me...sensitive stomach so I had to cut all apples out of my diet...no apple juice *cries* I love apple juice, apple cider, apple pie, apple cobbler, apples with caramel dip, just plain apples....
And you could not believe how many juices have apple juice in them. If I need to drink juice I'm limited to grape and cranberry.
I like grapes, almost every type of orange (really love blood oranges), watermelon, most berries (not blue berries) and pears at times (the grittyness is off putting though). I really hate bananas...they make me gag.

I should drink smoothies...
So there's plenty of stuff you like. Why not arrange a few things so you can eat that every day?
Smoothies are great for a really nutrient-dense food, and I like them a lot because I tend to not like what's in them by itself. Or in the case of honeydew and cantaloupe smoothie, it's the only way I can find to cram such a large quantity of fruit in me to get enough potassium. lol
The downside, though, is that they tend to be pretty calorie just for a snack. Maybe you do better than me, but mine tend to be around 200-300 calories for a 2cup portion. I don't stay full very long on those either! It's a great breakfast though.
Just got done with another 2.2 mile run. I wanted to run yesterday, but then it rained, so I wasn't able to run. The rain cooled things off for today, and as a result, I had no desire to run when I finally had some free time this evening. But I really wanted the NA points, so I got my butt out of the chair and went for a quick jog. Next time I run (tomorrow I hope), I plan to push myself and go for around 4 miles.
Its weird but i found that eventually you start to like foods you didnt like before.
I didnt like the almond milk at first, now I love it. I barely would eat a salad a year ago..now I have several a week. Hated tomatoes, now snack on cherry ones.
Hate celery...still do. lol
Hated cucumbers and working on that one. Can eat them in salad now but still not quite there.

I think a lot of it is in the mind.
Very true. You can grow to like foods. And also I think the older we get, our tastes change. Some foods I hated when I was younger, I love now. And also, don't be afraid to try anything. Never know what you might end up liking. The problem with most fast food, and prepared meals is that they are so saturated with salt and artificial flavors, your tastebuds get used to that. So it can be quite shocking what real food tastes like. Takes time to adjust.

I remember reading somewhere that taste wasnt connected to memory and that only smell and textures were. So if you start to lighten up to different textures and smell, foods that you never liked before start to become appealing. Or if you taste something and it tastes a lot better than it smells, you're probably going to start to associate that smell with positive memories instead of disgust.

hmmm.....never knew that. Thanks for the info regularguy. The brain can be quite amazing.
I haven;t been as active on this thread as I would like to. It sounds like everybody is working hard at this!
If it helps for anybody, I can help by posting good healthy recipes that I make at home that I eat on a regular basis! I wanna do anything I can to help get people going, and in my efforts of losing weight, the changing of eating habits was the hardest thing for me!
Getting used to homemade, healthy food is tough challenge when fast food is so readily available, and it just makes you not want to eat what is seemingly bland, but good for you food.
Ill try and get into a routine of posting some recipes for you guys that will be 100% vegan, which means all the fat of cheeses and milk and dairy products are cut out, they are vegetable and legume filled to give you vitamins minerals and proteins, and taste good (to me anyways)
ill agree 100% that giving up on pops, and unhealthy drinks is the hardest thing! Its something I STILL struggle with.
With all you guys trying and wanting to try and cut out those drinks, im going to go cold turkey and cut them out starting tomorrow (already had a coke today :S) Water coffee and tea for me. (I dont put anything but a little soy milk in my coffee and tea is straight)

I don't like cucumbers unless they are in vinegar with some salt lol. I eat raw onions the same way (stinky but they are just so good for you!)

lol i just had 2 pickles for a snack. 5 yummy calories!

I lost 75 lbs just hitting 10,000 steps a day and drinking water. I can't remember what my calorie consumption was but I am a dip freak for veggies so I know I was consuming some dumb amount of veggies and dip. They fill you up and keep you full. I just hate how expensive they are.

So don't give them all up right off the bat, unless you have a desire to. Cut back at first and then see how that goes.
3 pops a week is way better than 3 pops a day. As time goes by, you may cut that down even more; and even if you don't you still cut 18 cans a week out of your diet.
Strangest thing for me personally was cutting out diet pop altogether. I've shared this with the other mods before, but I went from 6+ cans of diet Coke a day to none. Swapped it out for water and unsweetened iced tea and never looked back. If I try to drink a diet pop now all I can taste is the aftertaste. When I get the itch I just grab a regular one.

So you guys that are all working like crazy and putting all the effort in, you deserve a lot of credit.

hmmm.....never knew that. Thanks for the info regularguy. The brain can be quite amazing.

I lost 75 lbs just hitting 10,000 steps a day and drinking water. I can't remember what my calorie consumption was but I am a dip freak for veggies so I know I was consuming some dumb amount of veggies and dip. They fill you up and keep you full. I just hate how expensive they are.

ill agree 100% that giving up on pops, and unhealthy drinks is the hardest thing! Its something I STILL struggle with.
