It was about time! My first true hate mail!
eBay user is puppybone69, does anyone in here know him?
He's sent me a few messages today concerning a sealed GB Donkey Kong Million Seller I have online. Looks like he's a bit offended by my asking price :
"are
you on drugs? nearly $300 for a game that SOLD OVER A MILLION COPIES,
and it's not even the original first print run version? even factory
sealed, this game is nearly worthless!"
After a brief response explaining that I've actually received good interest for this game, I get this monologue :
"well
that only goes to show you there's bigger idiots with more money to
burn than I'll spend just so you can make $200 more than you had to pay
to sell to a bigger idiot with more money!
obviously you and
your even more uninformed buyers have never witnessed how many smarter
collectors on sites like Digital Press are all laughing at sellers like
you and the idiots foolish enough to pay you way more than they should
for pseudo-rare factory sealed MILLION SELLER Player's Choice versions
of games that had print runs of well over just ONE million!
at
least the games that I pay way too much for just to get a factory
sealed copy really ARE as rare as you think your factory sealed MILLION
sellers are! how many of the retro games that I've bought factory
sealed for big money have YOU seen on ebay in the last decade? WAY less
than the HUNDREDS of million sellers like yours!
and how many overpriced pseudo-rarities like yours are STILL gathering dust on Amazon.com? TONS OF 'EM! ROFLMAO"
Knowing nothing good to respond, I reply with this :
"Would it be possible to know what's your mental issue?"
Not too long after I receive his response :
"would
it be possible to know what yours is? you also just proved my point
that just because some idiots are willing to pay way more than they
should for a certain game doesn't mean that it's actually WORTH that
much... so enjoy whatever you're able to make from bigger idiots with
more money to burn than I'm willing to spend while it lasts... in this
economy, there's sure to be far fewer fools burning money than there
used to be!'"
And my last atempt at putting an end to all this :
"How old are you, complaining about idiots while you for instance don't seem to be very clever?"
So, the guy is apparently a proud member of Digital Press... does a guy like this represents the average Digitpress user? The way he's thinking about value and rarity of items shows that he doesn't care much about the principle of demand and offer, nor the symbolical / historical value of some games.
P.S : Here's one of his recent purchases : http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170267857333

By the way, I'm fairly certain that Million Seller versions of a lot of older games are much more rare than the originals, since they tended to have lower print runs. Am I right on this?
I wonder if the guy actually wants the Donkey Kong.
some people have way to much time on their hands
agree.
and no this isn't your average digital press user. there are many very good collectors and people on that site. I used to visit it quite frequently, but only get there maybe two or three times a week. It wasn't that I didn't like the people there it was that I liked NES more than anything and this is a far better website dedicated to what I like. I wouldn't worry about the guy. don't feed the trolls and just let it go. It is likely some pre-pubescent prick, so don't worry guillavoie

and to add, NBA Give N Go, although not the most desirable, definitely not an easy title to find factory sealed. but still i wouldn't drop more than 10 bucks on one.
Indeed, it is not even easy to find CIB. That really explain his vision of video game collecting.
P.S. Nice name Citizen K
It's a shame he wasn't clever enough to come up with some story about how his autistic son's bedside wish was to own a factory sealed million seller DK. He might have gotten a bit further with you.
You mean retarded son

Yes... at least, in my heart.
I dont send emails out like this but I think this guys point is that some people buy these games up to simply make a profit off them. It makes our hobby more expensive and that much less fun when your being out bid by a reseller.
I don't see why resellers are always vilified as making the hobby more expensive. It's not like there are exclusive auctions that you don't have access to as well. If you want it more than the reseller does, then you are free to bid more and win it. If the reseller hopes to make a profit, then there is a pretty distinct ceiling in how high a price they can offer. If you go just a little higher than that, you win.
And that's exactly the point, if you cut the reseller out of that equation, then the collector would win it for much cheaper. There's almost no such thing as a good cheap auction style win, the majority of good finds come from underpriced Buy It Nows.
I don't have a problem with resellers because I think the majority of this community are collectors / reseller hybrids. It's natural to want to piece together a collection as quickly and cheaply as possible, so you have to buy big lots and part our your lesser quality duplicates. All part of the game...
Who else was the reseller competing with for their win, though? It's other collectors, that are STILL in the equation if you cut out the reseller. The fact is, there are enough collectors pursuing the stuff to set the price where it is, and resellers are just a convenient enemy to gripe about.

Action 52 CIB, winning bidder paid $209.38 and the 2nd highest bidder was Burnambill at $206.88. Third place bidder was a measly $146.99. I know Burnambill has a complete set so either he was buying this to resell or buying it as a condition upgrade. I'm going to take a guess and say he bought it for the comic / condition upgrade but that point is irrelevant.
As you can see, the winning bidder had to pay an extra $60 or so due to Nick bidding. I'm just showing that a reseller could in fact cost the winning bidder quite a bit of money.
I agree that resellers are just the scapegoats of the community, but I sympathize with the collectors as well. The reality is "If you can't beat em, join them" and you need to resell things here and there to fund your collection.
Actually, I don't even know what my point was
Jeremy.
