Great list! I agree with your picks, will try to add to that a bit.

A fantastic list, Cirellio. I'd highly recommend all of those on your list. You, sir, know your games.

As for Ar Tonelico: Qoga, I'd say this is the weakest installment in the series by far, and I thought was painful to play. I'd highly recommend tracking down the first two Ar Tonelico games on the PS2 first, especially the second one. AT 2 ranks as one of my top 5 favorite games of all time.

For Hyperdimension Neptunia, If you're buying them all right now, I'd recommend buying Re:Birth 1 and 2 on the Vita instead of 1 and 2 on the PS3. The battle system was revamped to be more like Victory (which is waaaaaaaaaay better, imo), and it has a somewhat different cast of characters and new voice acting. The PS3 games aren't bad, but the Vita ones are better.

    Thank you!

Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory is indeed the best of the PS3 installments and the remakes on PSVita take these successful ideas and run with them (Except Producing Perfection).

I agree Qoga is the weakest in the Ar Tonelico series, but it's also very overlooked from last gen. Could end up being rare I think.

There were so many others I was tempted to name but YouTubers out there are already mentioning the more obvious titles like Sin & Punishment Star Successor and Zack & Wiki.

Others that came to mind were Atelier Annie and even Suikoden Tierkreis, which I think gets a worse rap than it deserves.

My favorite two under-the-radar games from this list were Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and Super Robot Taisen OG Saga Endless Frontier.

I agree, although I think that most of the games we named are already tough to track down. Some of them, like Class of Heroes 2g, Crimson Gem Saga, and ZHP are very uncommon.

Those are both incredible games. I'd say my two would be The Guided Fate Paradox and a coin flip between Arcana Heart 3 or Tatsunoko vs Capcom. I would have said Super Robot Taisen, but I liked Project X Zone a smidge more.

Also, good to see another Ninety-Nine Nights fan out there. Even though the critics panned those games, I thought they were a lot of fun.
  • Oops, I forgot to list Guided Fate Paradox didn't I?

N3 is pretty much the only 'Dynasty Warriors' style series I've enjoyed playing, and I've even played Hyrule Warriors. I'm glad you like N3 too.

Was tempted to name El Shaddai, but it's just so weird it'll probably always be niche.

The real trick for me will be trying to figure out which Shin Megami Tensei games are most worth getting. They are coming out at such a rapid pace that it's nearly impossible to keep up.

I also have Project X Zone but I haven't popped it in to play yet, will have to give it a try!
  • Good List Guys!! Im a big Shmup fan myself and Raiden IV was such a great one! The soundtrack is off the hook and Come on, The Lazer Noodle Whip is the best!(See Pic Below!) Also, Ketsui Kizuna Jigoku Tachi for PS3 is amazing! May be a little short but its definitely sweet! And probably the best soundtrack in a shmup outside of Musha! Game kinda reminds me of a mix between Dodonpachi & Battle Garegga! Even though its a import its easy to import and even has a sweet collectors edition which plays just fine on US PS3's so get it while you can people! Its still relatively inexpensive! Just paid like $70 including shipping from japan for it! Check the pic below for what it looks like! I feel it needed to be on the list cause i never hear many people talk about it!

Edit* Picked up Sengoku Basara Samurai Heroes for ps3 recently and have been having alot of fun with it! Probably my favorite Dynasty Warriors type game!

Project X Zone is alotta fun, though it can get a little repetitive and battles can last upwards of an hour sometimes but I loved it! Loved seeing all the characters coming from all different franchises! Also, I've played a few SMT games and Shin Megami Tensei IV is probably my favorite! If you just wanna jump into a good one thats the place to start though the difficulty is a little high especially at first just trying to squire your first few demons and get the hang of it but after that it's just pure rpg bliss!

Thanks! I've sampled a few SMT games but have never committed to buying one. SMT IV does sound like a great start and I prefer high difficulty.

We were mainly talking about last gen stuff here that slipped under the radar, so maybe Cave SHMUP imports from last gen would fit the bill better, such as Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets.

Your post definitely made me want to get ahold of Raiden IV though

Ketsui is a Cave shmup! Well its made by 5PB who also did Bullet Soul but Cave put it out! Dodonpachi Resurection is another great one to have in the 360 library! The special edition uk copy is easy to get ahold of and plays fine in US 360's!  A few other good Cave imports to get for 360 are Dodonpachi Saidaioujou, Espgaluda II Black Label & Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5. Just make sure with those 3 you pick up the Platinum Hits versions cause i believe those are the only region free ones! Bullet Soul is also a great one and plays fine on us 360!

and I do love me some Muchi Muchi Pork! just played they it with my brother last night who had never played!
  • Oh yes sorry I was referring to SMT IV and Project X Zone being current gen.
  • Aw yeah! Haha, good games tho!

What about The Puppeteer for PS3?

I picked this game up not too long ago, brand new and cheap (it's $11 on Amazon brand new atm). This morning I decided to randomly pick a game to play on PS3 and The Puppeteer was my choice.

So far I'm at *EDIT because progress made since originally posting-Act 5, Curtain 3* (7 acts total w/ 3 curtains & a hidden area in each) and loving every minute! I don't know exactly how to explain it but it's just really fun, quirky, and the mark of what good story telling is all about. I went into this thinking it would be a cheesy kids game but it's really a unique experience all in its own. The controls are pretty straight forward and easy to learn while the visuals are sort of arts & crafts mixed with a puppet show. There's just a certain magic to this game that's hard to describe because you don't see it in modern gaming very much. It's almost as if you're watching a theatre show, including audience sighs, laughs, cheers, etc. The game gets progressively more difficult as you go along but since most folks here play NES, I'm sure they can handle this!

I'm not sure how to classify the gameplay...perhaps a 2.5/3D platform, adventure, puzzle? I'd give this a solid 9.5/10 just from what I've played so far. It's somewhere between a Disney movie, an 80s-90s era cartoon, an actual theatre show, and a good fantasy/adventure book...if you like those things, this game is for you.

I can't think of any other game like this for PS3. It has wonderful story telling, love-able characters, witty and good humor, great music score, musical numbers, whimsical feel and good narration. If you want 100% completion, chances are you're going to have to go back and replay some of the curtains in each act.

I was surprised to find how many awesome games this developer (SCE Japan Studio) has made over the years, including Legend of Dragoon, Shadow of the Colossus, Rogue Galaxy, etc... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCE_Japan_Studio

The Puppeteer is some of the best and most unique platforming I've ever played combined with a great story and humor. Check out the ratings and reviews on Amazon or Youtube and the general consensus is very positive.
