Easy NES games to beat on first playthrough

  • I don't have time to get into a debate over this now, but some of these answers are WAY off base. I think a lot of people are answering with games that they have sunk enough time into so that it's easy for them but not easy starting out. Some of the games listed in OP do not fit this criteria.

    11. Tiny Toon Advetures - this took a buddy and I about 4 hours to beat for the first time and some spots are downright brutal

    15. SMB - this one is borderline at best, but it's easy to so many of us since we've played it hundreds of times

    16. SMB 2 - a little too difficult and long to be part of this list

    17. SMB 3 - I'm pretty darn good at this game and it takes me minimum 2 hours to play it all the way through, every level

    18. Mega Man 2 - So many brick walls here for a first time player ... Quick Man's stage and Wily 4 are the first parts that come to mind

    20. Jackal - this one is borderline. It took me maybe 3 tries to beat it and some spots are tough if you don't have the best missile. The last boss is quite frantic too!

    23. Kirby's Adv. - easy game yes but it takes hours to play through ... that's why you can save!

    24. Contra (with code) - for a first timer this is really tough even with 30 lives

I'd completely agree with you on the SMB games.

For a first playthrough they were pretty easy to make PROGRESS in, but DEFINITELY not easy to BEAT within 90 minutes of ever having played them.

The ramp in difficulty during the end levels in all 3 games is SEVERE.

I am willing to bet that essentially NOBODY has beaten any of the 3 SMB games literally "on the first playthrough".

SMB1 -- between the Hammer gangs of 8-3, solving the path through 8-4, and beating the final hammer brother and bowser, there is PLENTY to kill you on your first time through the game, in a way where you won't be able to reliably win.

And that is all assuming you warped and didn't have to play through worlds 5 and 7 as a first-time player.

SMB2 -- unless you knew about the warps (which are better hidden than in SMB1), there are some seriously challenging levels in that game.

Plus the new style of boss fights for an SMB game.

SMB3 -- again, unless you knew to get the whistles, this is a long enough game to wear out and kill even experienced players (plus a no-warp game is an all-day affair)

Jackal -- I only mentioned this one for the list because I had never played it prior to the high score contest and we were all clobbering that game within pretty much an afternoon.

I am perfectly willing to offer the caveat that the final level has some challenging stretches, and the last boss is a beast compared to the rest of the game.

But based on the post title, you're right... nobody is beating that game "on the first playthrough".

  • Target Renegade is pretty easy, though I don't know about beating it on the very first playthrough. Beat-'em-up veterans should have little difficulty with it, and It only took me an hour of gameplay to beat it recently.

Orb 3D isn't easy, but I suspect a lot of people beat it on their first or second playthrough, because it has infinite continues and no password system (so who wants to play all those earlier levels again?).

In fact, I basically did exactly that, outside of 5-10 minutes of fooling around with the game to understand how it works. Level 29 is a nightmare, though.
  • SMB is not easy. Never has been. It would decimate a kid nowadays.
  • Never played it,but I'd think the Barbie game would be a pushover.

Apparently it's not! AdamL says it "requires more strategy than one would expect from a Barbie game", and his description of the ending makes it sound kind of tricky and obscure.

While Solstice (and Equinox) is an awesome game that can definitely be beaten in under 90 minutes without dying...

What sort of gaming god is capable of this feat?! o.O

It's not a particularly long game once you make a map.

And it's not combat intensive in a way that justifies dying once you know what to do.

    (Solstice, that is, NOT Equinox)

    Those isometric jumps though. >.<

Lol,kind of had a feeling this type response would come up. Maybe we should just give the OP a list of difficult games to avoid instead.
  • Tiny toons is no cake walk. Don't let the cute graphics fool you.

Snow bros, power blade, life force with code

    Actually, you're right.

I'm trying to beat a bunch of the games that I've never played as a kid, and therefor probably haven't played much at all, if ever.

SMB really isn't easy, but it's familiar and I have played the hell out of it as a kid so it's kind of easy to me, as you suggest.

I beat Tiny Toons last back in 2010, but I can't remember if it was easy or not.  If you say it's no cakewalk I believe you.

After thinking about it, I am going to remove Mega Man 2, Kirby's Adventure, and Jackal.

  • I've never not beat an RPG on the first try, unless I gave up because I was bored with it. Even if you get stuck and cant figure it out, you can start where you saved months later. But I'm assuming you mean games you can beat in one sitting your first try.

I don't think most people could beat the last stage of Jackal without having played it ever before.

And as soon as you die once and lose all your powerups, you're screwed.

An exerpienced person could do it, but not on first runthrough.

  • I would say Puss N Boots is possible on the first run-through.

The only tough part is the final boss, but it's a matter of luck anyhow.

Also, depending on what you mean by "first playthrough", Adventures of Lolo is doable, you just have to solve the puzzles.

Since you get a password for each puzzle, there's no replaying previous puzzles, and you can re-attempt each one over and over.

I also beat Orb 3D on my first playthrough.

It took a little bit to understand the game, and some of the levels did take a long time, but I did beat it on my first real attempt.

Yup, that's pretty much what I mean. Sitting down and playing through a game on your first or second time in under 90 minutes.

Someone suggested 1942 and I tried that. I got to 18 stage and my nes started blinking. Where is my Blinking Light Win???

I was playing Uncharted Waters once and got really far, only to have the lock on the cart fail and it popped up, killing the connection.  And of course I never saved because it's hard to remember to save in that game. Since that day any long games I play on emulators where I can just smack a button to save if I remember to.  I almost never use save states since I use a psp and never power the "console" off, but it's nice knowing if something failed and the internal game doesn't load, I have a backup.

  • Oh a neat one that's one sitting is Dizzy the Adventurer, aka Dizzy: Prince of the Yolkfolk. Very short game, hardest part is not rolling off the damned boat if you think you have to jump on it.
  • I can't think of a single NES game I beat the first time I played.

In fact, the term "playthrough" is an anachronism that belongs to modern gaming and shouldn't be used in the NES classic gaming context.

I can... dynowarz. There is probably one or two more i can't remember. I played that game the first time in 2010 and beat it.

I beat Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers the very first time I played it. Probably the easiest game I have ever played on the nes.
  • Panic Restaurant is relatively easy in my opinion. I beat it the first time I ever played it.

Once you get a handle on Contra and are able to keep your spread, it's actually not that tough. One game I always thought was over hyped in terms of difficulty. That goes for Super C as well.

I'd also say every Mega Man with the exception of 1. Having said that, I think my brother is just getting the hang of Crystal Man's stage in #5 lol... twenty years later.

lol at the last comment there.

I would say SMB is easier than Mighty Final Fight. That game ramps up in difficulty pretty fast, although the game can be easily abused to make it much less challenging.

Not me, I got it when I was a kid, so it took me a while to beat.  When I played throught it again in 2010, I was surprized how dang easy it was and I plowed through it.  I used to think the last stage was hard when I was a kid.

You must be much better than I at video games.  I used to own Panic Restaurant about 10 years ago, and I couldn't beat it, even after giving it a couple tries.   Although, I am much better at NES games than I was then.

Defintely worth another try. It definitely isn't simple, but I didn't find it all that challenging. Mainly because the game handles well and isn't super cheap like a lot of NES games. I am pretty good at games though, not to sound like a asshole.

lol... don't worry, I hear it from my online friends all the time. I'm usually the one complaining even when I'm doing better than my clan mates and then they rip into me accordingly. Understandable.

I actually agree about the quality of the game. The controls are tight and it's a good game. Sad I sold it.

Anyway what about Digger T Rock? Is this a easy game? I just got it.

Puss N Boots is exactly the type of game I'm talking about in this thread.  Short, and easy.  This is another game I've never played before.

It did take me a few times to beat, but I was able to beat it within a couple hours.  The thing that got me was the horrible jumping physics.  That part in London  where there is lots of platforming caused a lot of cheap deaths for me.  I also had trouble with the end boss.  The end boss is just so cheap.  I didn't even know what was going on the first time I got to it since 3 bad guys just gang up on you and blast you.  The flickering is so bad I almost thought something was wrong with the game.

I had to watch a youtube walkthrough and then I was able to beat it once I realized you could touch the fat guys but the cat meant an instant death.  I'll say this is a good game to start the list with since it is so easy and short.
