Easy NES games to beat on first playthrough

  • Just beat Karnov...

Yet another game that was elusive to me in my childhood. Not sure why I've never played it before. I don't recall if my local rental stores had it or not, but I wouldn't put it past my 6 year old self (in 1988 when this came out) to pass on it due to the box art.

Anyway, this game was actually pretty hard for me. It took me several hours and had to use every one of my unlimited continues the game provides. Cheap deaths, bad collision detection, and enemy pop-in plague this game. I also was getting ahead of the screen scrolling due to the mapper being only able to scroll vertically and horizontally; not diagonally. This led to an enemy just appearing directly in front of me on more than one occasion.

The enemy spawning is really bad. They usually just appear without any warning. It helps to know that the boomerang is what you should use against bosses. That fact is vital to surviving. During level play, the boomerang sucked, so I was too scared to use it during boss fights because I thought it would get me killed. Turns out, how powerful it is saved me.

Also, terrible ending to this game.
  • Well, at least I beat 2 NES games today. I'd call that a success. I can't recall the last time I've done that. (for games I've never played before at least.)
  • I may try DuckTales 2 next. Is it easier than the first one? The first one did confuse me when I was younger. I don't like the maze type levels like Transylvania.
  • Cliffhanger and Karate Kid are pretty easy. Journey to Silius as well. Metal Storm is another one but it takes a bit to get used to the gravity jump mechanics.

The ending is a lot better in the Japanese version, however, that version also don't allow you to continue therefore you're forced to 1CC it.
  • Marble Madness definitely isn't an easy game to beat the first time you play it, except maybe if you've played the arcade version (or a comparable port) a lot. The Ultimate level is very tricky and has some semi-random elements that make a bulletproof run harder to construct.

Silius is quite difficult.  Much like Contra, knowing enemy placements and patterns is half the battle so a noob is going to be at a big disadvantage.  Some of the bosses and platforms (esp that last level) are quite tricky.  On top of that, limited continues.

Metal Storm would be a good option though for OP.  Not super easy due to one hit deaths, but checkpoints and unlimited continues makes it rather forgiving.  Also passwords if you don't have time to clear it in one sitting.  I'd recomend it.

  • Yeah I gotta say I disagree with Sam on this one. Hell, I can no-death Silius fairly consistently and even I'd still consider it to be a hard game just because of how demanding it is, and how minimal your window for mistakes is... and this is for someone who has "mastered" it, so it's gotta be just brutal for a first-timer.

If you just want to finish the game DT2 is very quick and easy.
  • Flintstones 2 was incredibly easy.

DuckTales 2 is one of my favorites from my childhood. Played it so much. If you want to forgo the secret level it doesn't take much to beat though.
  • Flintstones 2 is easy but that gravity-defying wheel segment will really fuck you over your first time playing.
  • Oh yeah, ducktales 2 is super easy. So far I think it's number 1 on the list. Just beat it tonight.
  • Adventures in the Magic Kingdom

The Flintstones: The Rescue of Dino & Hoppy

The Flintstones: The Surprise at Dinosaur Peak! (the last level is hard though)

    Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu

    Kabuki-Quantum Fighter

    Power Blade

    Tiny Toon Adventures

    Tiny Toon Adventures 2

They're not as easy as Felix the Cat or Wacky Races though.

Beat it in 2 hours the first time I ever played it at the age of 8 or 9, way too easy.  I'm assuming you don't want the silly / stupid easy ones like "Sesame Street ABC & 123s", so my list is those my <10 self could beat first time playing it:

    Wizards & Warriors.

    Donkey Kong Jr.

    Anticipation (easy mode)

River City Ransom (2 player easier than 1)

    Mario is Missing.

  • I always found Bionic Commando pretty easy but good.
  • Pretty sure I beat Master Chu & Drunkard Hu my first time playing.

I haven't played it in ages, but apparently it took me less than 2 hours to beat Dynowarz (which was already mentioned, of course).
  • I'll add Totally Rad to the list.

Bought it today and beat it within a few hours. I used all my continues up twice, then managed to get to the end boss.

Then I played again, and managed to only die once until the last level. I had to use one continue that play through and then I beat the final boss on the first or second life on that continue.

I kept forgetting to use my magic to heal myself. I'm not used to doing that in platformers. That's why I was having so much trouble at first. Also, I had no idea what all the magic items were or how to change back to my normal self. Took a while to get the hang of it, but there are only 5 levels and once you get the hang of it, the game is easy. Not a bad game.  At first I was annoyed by the fact you have to start the level over again if you die at the level's boss, but it wasn't too bad of a setback.  It probably prevented the game from being too easy.    I'd say the difficulty is about where I like it.

The game does have some polish to it.  I really enjoy how the main character looks when it shows a close up of him.  The graphics are decent.  even some parralax scrolling on the first level.  The colors kind of remind me of Batman in some levels.  Some of the enemies seem expertly placed in the levels to make it challenging, but not cheap.  I'd put it in the top 15 platformers on NES for sure.
  • Toki is a great fun and easy game. Didn't beat it the first time I ever played it, but I got to the final stage.
  • If you're into PAL games, may I suggest Astérix.

As for NTSC games, I remember Toki to be quite easy. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game, but you can basically exploit a 1UP loop near the final boss.

And the other bosses are quite easy.

EDIT: Lol, didn't notice somebody talked about the same exact game just above me

    This is an understatement.

Also, I wouldn't add Jackie Chan to that list. This one is quite hard (at least for me)

  • Just beat Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout.  I didn't check when I started, but I'd say it took about 90 minutes to beat.

Pretty easy game.  It's generous with lives, so I didn't even get one game over screen.  The hit detection is horrible in this game. That led to some cheap deaths.

  • Adventures in the Magic Kingdom is not the greatest game, but it's pretty easy.

I hated that game.  I did beat that one, had a lot of trouble on the minecart level.
  • I just beat Adventures of Lolo. It took me several nights to beat, since I didn't want to cheat and watch walkthroughs of the puzzles. But, If you've gone through the game before it should be easy to beat again and shouldn't take long. I was stumped on a couple levels for a bit. Sometimes it helps to stop playing for a night or two and come back to it.
  • I just beat monster in my pocket. It took me about 2 complete game overs and beat it on my 3rd run. Also it look under 2 hours total I think. I'll add it to the list.

I have never played this one before. Konami really knocked it out of the park with this game. Great graphics, good music and great play control.
  • So far Felix the Cat is on the top of the list. I just beat it without ever playing it before with no continues, under an hour.  That's exactly the type of game I was asking for in this thread.

    Not a bad game.

Respectfully, I completely disagree. It's subjective, but I argue that Adventures in the Magic Kingdom is difficult enough to fall outside of Mr. J's criteria. Even the platforming levels require some straight memorization to avoid dropping into holes (bloody knockback) as well as timing those jumps correctly. Plus, the minecart requires quite a bit of memorization to overcome the speed factor.
  • Crash 'N' the Boys: Street Challenge

Each event has it's own technique/moves you gotta figure out, but the game can be beaten rather quickly. Love the game. =)
  • Ghostbusters can be beaten in 15 minutes if you use the glitch on the stairs that makes you invincible.

AD&D: Heroes of the Lance can be beaten in about 10 minutes, no glitches needed, just follow the walkthrough on GameFAQs.

Home Alone can be beaten in literally 20 minutes since that's the definition of beating it. It's not all that easy though.

Sky Kid is very easy if you simply avoid most of the fights, and doesn't take too long.

I beat all these games on my first playthrough except Home Alone

You die in one hit in the Japanese version, makes it quite a bit tougher near the end.
