  • Super Glove Ball is done, I gave up on Mutant Virus again :/.
  • I put up a thread for us to swap some ideas for mutant virus! If you press Up + A + B + select and start at the main screen you'll go right to level 3 and you can practice from there. Altho, Level 1 and 2 are really not that bad.

Have i gotten the farthest yet or have you gotten to level 5 nick?
  • I was able to make it to level 5 but not every time.
  • I will take my chances with Mutant Virus this weekend.
  • If you get some strategies or ideas, find my Mutant Virus thread and add em there!
  • Will do. I should have Friday off this week as well, so I will invest it on trying to find out how to work stage 5 on this game.
  • Lemme give you a tip, you dont lose the game at that stage because you die, you lose because rooms quickly get overrun with the virus and when it hits a critical point its game over and you have to start all over again. The closest I got was 6 out of 8 rooms done. If they gave you more time, id have beaten it already.
  • Sorry guys, I've been away from this site for a while, so I wasn't able to participate this year. I'm utterly amazed how we aren't even through April and almost EVERYTHING is done! There isn't even anything left on the list that I think I could beat......
  • Monday night is my last class, after that I'm diving back into Faria.
  • Double post. Ugh!
  • Okay, this Mutant Virus thingy is a wee bit challenging.

It will take a while to beat this.
  • Who beat Mutant Virus before? If it's so hard, why is it only an 8?

    How far did you get?

I have a feeling in the past, perhaps some save states were used.

In 2012, that would be khog143:

I just tortured myself via The Mutant Virus. I managed to beat it though, never could as a kid, so at least I can mark that off my list and never touch its foulness again.

And as for last year, well, um:

I got to stage 5 after several hours playing it.

  • Came to see if it was done, I'll keep trying this weekend too. I can get to 5 pretty consistently but then it all goes to hell.
  • I'm gonna have to get this game now and experience it for myself.

Dude, it's terrible.  Wiz asked me some tips when he beat it, and it is a really hard came to give pointers on.  It's very much trial and failure, and the game just drags on FOREVER.  And it gets extremely difficult.
  • Thats why im trying to create some sort of strategy!! Try my strats and improve em!
  • It seriously is, I don't think there's any strategy it just is going to come down to luck.
  • I just purchased Mutant Virus.

I don't have time now but in a couple days I'll see what it's all about.
  • So im working a little on mutant man thats a tough game
  • There has to be strategy, thats why im trying to get everyone involved! Some room are easier to beat, and with the CMs available they might be more beneficial in some rooms, while in others you can just blast away. Of course there is luck involved but i think with a specific strategy it could be beaten most times. Getting up to level 4 isnt too bad. Level 4 is hit or miss but the first time i tried it I beat it, now im trying to think of some strategy. Level 5 is where its at. At least you get the super gun that doesnt go away when you die. It just might be easier to get to that point, and then lose all your lives and continue, so you start the level with the max amount of lives (6?). Which means you can get a bit aggressive with the virus and not worry about continuing.
  • Assuming Daria has Faria under control, I like the image of all the thread's most accomplished players simultaneously focusing their powers on Mutant Virus. I gave it a shot the other week, but pretty much noped out once I hit Level 2, though it's a trip to see a game based on The Game of Life.

I only played it for a few moments before I said fuck it, but it seemed like "the game of life" combined with astroids control.  Plus a good health dose of "Guess how to fuckin play"

It seems too fast paced to be able to use the whole game of life idea agins tthe virus itself though, so no cmbo shots to make the whole thing blow itself up or the like, but I could see some TAS runs could win with just a few well timed and placed shots.   I find it odd theres no TAS videos for it.

  • I have been trying it, but I am nowhere near to beat it.

I am not being able to put a lot of hours on it right now, sadly. It will be at least a week or two until I can put all my focus and play it daily to try to beat the damn thing.
  • I made it to level 2, but I honestly don't really understand the mechanics, like why sometimes the virus killed me and sometimes I could fly through it... my bullets seem to pass through the virus... am I aiming for the squiggly black dots? the walls? I understand I need to change the colors, but what is the virus, the dots or the color? I'm confused.

There isn't really a great answer to this.  As far as I remember, and it has been around 3 years since I played this so I could be remembering incorrectly, I never quite figured out the whole death thing.  I am one of the few people that has had this game for a long time since I had it as a kid, and I remember playing it back then too and never really understanding the mechanics fully.  I always assumed the "virus" is the black dots, but sometimes in order to eliminate it you must shoot the wall, and other times you must shoot the black dot itself.

This isn't helpful at all, just thought I would tell you that in 25 years of knowing and playing this game off and on (mostly off), and finally beating the game, I am no closer to understanding how I did that than I ever was.

Yea that's what put me off to the game.  I don't get it.  There's wierd shit happening and I'm not sure if I'm controlling it or not, and if I am, how I'm controlling it.  Need to play it sometime in an emulator that supports rewind so I can see for sure, if I do action A, result A happen, do action B, result B happens.

But I also dislike the controlls so fuck it, trying to learn this game sounds like work.

I think the virus is the color. The dots themselves are just algorithmic growth patterns based on The Game of Life -- I'm not sure that you affect them otherwise, at least not without special weapons? -- and each dot "carries" whatever color it's on.

I don't know what the manual says, but my impression is that you could theoretically fire a certain number of ridiculously well-placed shots and the playfield would convert itself.

As for wall vs. dot, it's basically collision detection -- the shot travels until it hits a solid object -- right? I think walls/edges are stabler in the Game of Life algorithm since they're "attacked" from fewer sides, but I'm not sure.
