Is this a real Gameboy Advance SP?

Hi, I bought a Gameboy Advance SP (AGS-101) from a retro video game store last week, and I've been wondering if it's an actual, Nintendo-sold Gameboy, and not a fake.

The guy told me the colour's "Champagne", and it's "Limited Edition", but I don't know for sure. I haven't been able to find much online. I also haven't seen many SPs (if any) with that particular sticker on the back, so I'm wondering if you guys could tell me if this is an actual Gameboy Advance SP, as well as what colour it is.

I should also note that he also said that the system inside is definetely real, but the shell might be replaced. Is there a way of knowing this?

Thanks!

  • Normally the back sticker doesn't have a production year. But why one would go out of their way to fake an Australian sticker rather than US, EU, or Japan is baffling.
  • Maybe they thought Australia was far enough away from everywhere else, that no one would know what an Australian one was meant to look like exactly, thus not knowing it was fake?
  • Seems legitimate, though whether or not it's a special, limited edition "Champagne" colored system I don't know. I did find this, not sure if it helps at all:

  • Open 'er up.
  • Is it me, or does it look like the minish cap limited edition without the triforce screenprint?

Oh, that's unfortunate. And yeah, that's true. But in a way, The 8 Bit Redux has a point... But just so you (and everyone else) knows, someone else I talked to said that it didn't feel like those other cheap shells, so that's a good sign.

    Thank you for your comment!

I'm glad you find it to be legitimate! Oh, okay. Wow, what a coincidence!: I've seen that video before; the label looks almost identical to mine. If you read the comments, one of the users describes my exact type of SP label. Someone else also has my type there, too, I believe.

Thank you for suggesting and posting the link, and for your comment!

AHH! What if I mess it up and can't put it back? Then again, I have wanted to change the case, so... But what can I look for to know if it's a real Gameboy SP? Thanks, though!

I just saw some images of it earlier, and the Minish Cap edition seems like a darker gold. But the back label seems to have a similar barcode, or what ever that is on the top right. Is there a website I can check out that has a list of all the Gameboy Advance SP labels?

  • Hi! Wondering if the mystery's been solved around this one. I came across the same model in the wild today (pink colored though) and i am wandering if its genuine or not...any help would be appreciated. You can see the picture of the bottom label here: http://imgur.com/jXIUARt

  • I don't think gba consoles are bootlegged too much. The games are another story entirely. For the most part it's just new shells with real hardware in them, as far as anything "not authentic" goes. And the back stickers that usually come with those new shells say AGS-001, and have some different information on them.

It seems fine to me overall.
  • Just wondering if anyone has come across a fake GBA SP system? Some guy locally is selling NEW GBA SP systems(boxed from Japan) and it seems to be alittle too good to be true.

Anyone have links to how to tell real from fake systems?
