While I'm not a fan of Order of the Griffon, and I have to wonder why they used the spellfire artwork on it, it's made by Westwood Studios, who did some of the SSI Goldbox games at the end, and made command and conqure plus nox.
I've haven't played any of the games listed here (except for very beginning of ChronoTrigger)
I did play a some of "The World Ends With You", which I have heard a lot of people say was excellent, but I found it very confusing (although it wasn't included on this must play list)
Nope. But aside from that Kingdom Hearts crap it's a list I whole heartedly support.
I admit, KH is one that just floored me the first time I saw it. The graphics, and beloved Disney characters (Hades, lord of the dead). I just had a blast with both of them.

I wanted to love KH, I should probably give the series another shot. I was all set to play the first one but instead of Disney the begining kept throwing FFX characters at me. By the time I gained control of Donald I just didn't care anymore.

Same here. TWEWY is a game I'm not quite sure about but there are definite fanatics in love with the game.
I think the stylus battle system was a little weird, and the intro was a little too emo maybe.
If I find the game again I'm giving it another shot.
That is really it, for must play RPGs anyways. I have played some and liked them, but don't consider them must plays, like Illusions of Gaia or Lunar 2, and there are some game series I haven't even played yet but plan on doing so very soon, like Breath of Fire or Grandia.

I am a giant fan of the Lunar games and prefer the 2nd game over the original but I believe both games are must plays for any JRPG fan. What turned you off about the second game?
I haven't played a ton of RPGs, but I'd say that Super Mario RPG, EarthBound, Final Fantasy VII, and both Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door are must plays. Y'know, this list makes me realize I really need to play more of Ni No Kuni and Kingdom Hearts...

I would recommend anything Final Fantasy up until FFXI. With the spin-off titles there's not much I can suggest other than FFVII: Crisis Core, Final Fantasy Tactics, and the Final Fantasy Legend series for Gameboy. And if you're going back and looking to enjoy the classics from I to VI give the PlayStation compilations (Origins, Chronicles and Anthology) a chance. They're much cheaper than the Nintendo/ Famicom counter-parts and include updated graphics and rendered cut-scenes.

After some thought, I'd recommend a new RPG player give Ultima Exodus a spin. At the very least, to give them some perspective on how far RPG's have come, and what things were like back in the day. On the other hand, they may find the character creation intriguing(as I did), and spark some creativity.
I've met many younger gamers who I think aren't aware that RPG's existed before Final Fantasy, or even know what the original FF looks like.

For thoese wondering:
Artwork was used on this unrelated game:
and came from this one:
The book was released in 1987, order was in 1992. Spellfire name was later used for TSR's trading card game. http://www.spellfire.net/history.shtml
Forgot about this one. Always remember to recycle, kids!
