NES Wrestling Games?

So I've been on kind of a wrestling kick lately (which I blame several of my friends for) and I've decided to cross it over with my other favorite thing: NES collecting!

I've been surprised to see how many wrestling games exist for the NES, so I wanted everyone's opinion here. Which of them are good, and where do I start? Are any of the LJN ones better than the others? How about that WCW one? Is Tecmo's any good? TELL ME WHAT TO THINK, NINTENDOAGE!

  • I don't like any NES ones, but Royal Rumble for the SNES is awesome.
  • Pro Wrestling for the win. King Slender is a legend.
  • I've always been a big fan of Pro Wrestling and Tag Team Wrestling
  • Love pro wrestling!
  • I prefer the WWF games on snes the most. I know that doesn't really help.
  • I was a big fan of the Tecmo one.

Also love the Battle Royal modes on Royal Rumble and Raw for the SNES.
  • I don't play wrestling games all that much but I do enjoy watching it.

I would have to say M.U.S.C.L.E is probably my favorite on the NES.
  • I don't think any of them are worth playing.
  • I have to agree. SNES are better. WCW isnt too bad for laughs on nes. Royal Rumble for Sega is my favorite.
  • Pro Wrestling, Wrestlemania Challenge, Tecmo World Wrestling
  • None of them on NES are very good, really.
  • I love Pro Wrestling.

Also, one of the WWF games was pretty alright. Not Wrestlemania... heck, I remember it had Hogan, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Rick Rude, Andre, Macho Man, Big Boss Man, maybe a couple others. You could do a 3 on 3 tag match, and each wrestler's theme would play when they got tagged in. 8 bit Rick Rude theme music is the best music.

You're thinking of wrestlemania challenge, which I played for the first time a couple weeks ago, and my brother and I had a blast with it. Definitely a playable NES wrestling game. Not amazing, but great for some 2 player wrasslin!

    Thank you, that's the one!

I was a big wrestling fan as a kid, I rented that game countless times.

SNES wrestling games aren't any better, though. It's not until the N64 games and the Smackdown games on PS1 that there were any good console wrestling games (I dunno about the Japanese Fire Pro games, I hear those were good).
  • Just go straight to WWF No Mercy on n64.
  • Glad to see I'm not the only wrestling fan who doesn't like any of the NES wrestling games. They were alright for their time, but as soon as I played the SNES ones, I never looked back.

I'm going to be "that guy," and say I even have trouble going back to No Mercy/WM2k/etc. WWE 2k14 really did everything No Mercy did and multiplied it a hundred-fold. (hides from incoming flames and arrows)
  • Pro Wrestling is one of the most entertaining games on the NES. I love it.
  • I didn't like most of the NES wrestling games, and a lot of the SNES ones aren't great either.

The Super Famicom was another story - "Super Fire Pro Wrestling X Premium" was a great game. I had a repro made of it years ago (translated and roster hack). I definitely recommend that game if you can find somebody to make it. Before it's time.

Hall of fame comment right there!
  • Double post.
  • Pro Wrestling is the only one worth playing on the NES. It's really unfortunate that the music is so bad (30 second loop) but other than that it's solid. Honestly, I think this was the best wrestling game until WCW/NWO World Tour on the N64 came out and finally bested it.
  • NES wrestling games are basically garbage

WWF Wrestlefest and Superstars are fun on Arcade, but the rosters are kind of shallow

Royal Rumble and RAW on SNES/Genesis are decent, so are the Fire Pro Wrestling games, but they aren't button mashers like the WWF games are.

WCW/nWo Revenge - WWF No Mercy - Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 (Japanese game) are all phenominal on N64

Power Moves Pro Wrestling and WCW vs The World on PS1 are decent as well

Fire Pro Wrestling Returns on PS2 is probably one of the best wrestling games post PS1/N64 era just for the sheer customization level you have

and a couple underrated gems are Def Jam Vendetta and Def Jam New York for PS2/Xbox
  • I had fun with m.u.s.c.l.e.
  • Pat the NES punk has a pretty comprehensive review of the wrestling games
  • Wrestlemania 2000 for the win! I know I know, that's for N64 I just couldn't resist.
  • Man, lot of great replies in this thread. I actually do appreciate the advice about a few of the SNES ones - the only 16-bit wrestling game I've played to this point was RAW IS WAR, which is...so-so, so I was curious about the others. As far as the N64 goes No Mercy and Wrestlemania 2000 were my jams, and I have a bit of a soft spot for In Your House as one of the first Saturn games I ever played.

Pro Wrestling seems the far and away winner so far which I'm not surprised by, but I am relieved/glad to hear the Tecmo one is good too. I'd feel weird knowing there was a bad Tecmo NES game.

Quoted for specific information - was that the one Suda51 worked on? I know he did one of the SFC Fire Pro games.

  • I actually liked the music in Pro Wrestling. Some one said it wasn't that good. The Tecmo wrestling game is pretty good too. I vaguely remember playing a WCW one for the NES as well that wasn't that bad.

No idea the specifics of who worked on the game.  Or was that in reference to the translation?

I bought the repro a few years back, somebody on DigitalPress made a copy for me.  I definitely recommend the game to anybody that likes wresting games.
