Thoughts on the PS4

Hey everyone, I was thinking about buying a PS4, and I wanted to get some thoughts from you guys to help me decide. To anyone who has one, what do you think of it? Also what are the best games available for it right now? I'm thinking about getting ones like Alien Isolation and J-Stars Victory Vs. +, but I'm curious if there's any must haves I should get, or if there's even enough of a good library so far to support buying a new system. Thanks in advance!

  • I love mine, Bloodborne is a must play, Dying Light, Shadow of Mordor, Dark Souls II, plus Batman Arkham Knight releases toward the end of June
  • ps4 is overall a very good system. many great games already and free games every month with your plus membership. you wont be disappointed bro
  • Love it. Far Cry 4, Middle Earth, Last of Us, Infamous Second Son, Final Fantasy Type 0, Wolfenstein TNO, Diablo III, Bloodborne, Dark Souls II, Mortal Kombat X, Witcher 3, Batman Arkham Knight. Also check out some of the smaller titles like Helldivers and Child of Light, oh and all the PS+ stuff.

There is both a Last of Us bundle and a Batman bundle out there for the same price as the core system. If you were interested in either of those I'd jump on it.
  • The controller is much improved over the previous Playstation controllers as well.
  • I think there's enough out for it now to justify buying one, no matter what kind of games you're into.
  • I think all reservations on the PS4 will be quelled later down the line. I'm not too into what's going on with current-gen gaming, but i see a lot of potential in this system. As far as PS4 vs Xbone, I feel like there is more of a "gamers experience" within the Playstation - that might just be a biased perception on my part though, I can't really explain it.
  • Controller is simply amazing. Console itself has solid build quality, small and quiet, and never ran into a problem with the system. The games are pretty good, slightly better versions of stuff we've seen from last gen (many are still available on last gen consoles). I think the best is still to come, but there's enough out there to keep you busy for sure. I do really wish they'd update with PS1/2 classic support.
  • PS4 is right now my top choice of everything out there. Current line up + already announced future releases = my go-to for a long long time.
  • You can wait a while to get "better value" with more games and a cheaper system but you'll have missed out on all the good fun you can be having now! I love PlayStation but in my opinion I preferred the Xbox 360 to the PS3, but the PS4 though is quality, The Last of Us remastered, Shadows of Mordor and most definitely Destiny are what I've played the most.
  • I've got a shit load of work to do next week but then I think ill be buying one of these as a reward.

Also going back on the no booze/no carbs/minimal fat/weights /cycling diet. Fucking miserable but last time I lost 20lbs in a month and it stayed lost.
  • As others have mentioned. The controllers and graphics have improved. Trophy syncing and game/system updates are way faster as well. The only knock I have on it is there's no folder option on XMB to hide all the PSN titles in like on the PS3. I hate the XMB cluttered with launch windows.

I'd say my modern gaming time is spent playing PS3->PS4->WiiU->X360 ATM with PS3 eating most of the playtime simply because a lot of my friends/family have yet to take the plunge on PS4/XBONE and we game online a lot.

It has plenty of great games to justify buying at this point. I recommend it.
  • I think it is a really good time to buy a PS4 right now...since you can get some good games for 20$ or less and the ps plus is really worth it.
  • I feel like the PS4 vs XBone did a switch-a-roo with the interface, where the PS4 interface is much more intuitive than the XBone and much easier to use.

Like others mentioned - controller has improved (though I hate the push pad), and regardless of what type of gamer you are, there's a game on it for you.

Same could be said with the XBone - better controller than the 360 (especially that dpad!), and enough games for whatever your flavor may be.

IMO, I don't think you'll be disappointed with either, but if you're into RPG's, definitely stick with the PS4 (the main reason why I got it as I have a feeling we'll get some great ones throughout the consoles life)
  • I'm gonna bump this thread instead of starting a new one as I have the same question as OP.

I actually bought a PS4 tonight. I purchased the Black Ops 3 1TB limited edition bundle. I was initially torn between this and the SW: Battle Front bundle with the Darth PS4. One of the reason I decided to go with the Blops edition is because I planned on picking up that game anyway (a number of my friends have it) and because of the 1TB drive on it. Another reason is this bundle seems to be already really hard to come by around my area and on most Canadian retail websites. Also, the Darth version was also released with the Disney Infinity which I think takes away from the battle front bundle. The price of the DLC for Battlefront definitely put a damper on the thought of getting that edition, too.

Having said all that I am keeping it sealed for the time being as I am not sure I want it. A couple reasons I want to wait to open it.

-Holiday price drop (although unlikely with the Blops PS4)

-Still content with my Wii U and have games to keep me busy

-I really want to get into Street Fighter V and if there was bundle coming out for that in a month it would be disappointing. (though I could just sell my current PS4).

-Even though a lot of my friends have it there isn't one single game I absolutely have to play on it right now. (really looking forward to SF V, Mirror's Edge, Doom, and Uncharted 4).

Advice on what I should do? Open it up and forget about it? Save and wait for a different bundle/possible price cut?

I also like to read some more opinions on how people like their PS4 now that were further into it. Anything you really hate about it? Most of the comments in here are quite positive, which is good.
  • Just keep it sealed until you see if a Street Fighter bundle comes out. Keep busy with your Wii U in the mean time. If a bundle with Street Fighter doesn't end up coming out, then bust that bad boy open and enjoy.
  • PS3 still has a better game library and selection but that's pretty much due to time. I could say the same about PS2 and some might also say original PS.

PS4 was the very first Sony console where I waited until year 2 to buy. The first year just didn't have enough games to warrant a purchase IMO. So far so good with no complaints other than the small 500GB HDD they gave us. If you plan on owning no more than 5-10 games then it might suit you but keep in mind that you might download digital games, saving share data (screenshots and video) takes up room, game updates, etc... I'm so glad that I upgraded to a 2TB drive and that it's so easy a middle school student could do it.

2TB PS4 upgrade kit, includes everything you need including USB flash drive to backup any save data, screwdriver, plus detailed instructions...It also turns your old 500GB drive into a fully functional external drive PLUS increases the overall speed/performance of your PS4 just a little bit!

You've already read most of the positive aspects about the console so all I can say is OPEN IT ALREADY AND HAVE FUN!!

Open the fucker and play Fallout 4, it's awesome.
  • If you want a PS4/XB1, this is the year to pick one up. Stores are really pushing the console bundle sales sales this year, several options right now to get a console bundle for $300/350.
  • Here state'side the ps4 uncharted bundle will be 299.99 ( during Black Friday )

Don't know if you're getting that deal in Canada but that's a good price with Ps4 versions of the uncharted series.

    Battlefront has been awesome

Fallout ( everyone else is into )

    Metal gear

gtaV is a must ( it looks sooooo Damn good and if you haven't played this game you're missing out )

COD is meh for me this time - don't like that high tech type character / gun they went with.

Personally my favs from that franchise are modern warfare2/3-black ops 1/2

Street fighter is going to be cool but you should try the guilty gear stuff
  • I posted on this thread on day one and nothing for me has changed. I have forgone all other systems, retro and otherwise, and am 100% PS4.

I can almost guarantee there will not be a PS4 Street fighter bundle but they do have other bundles already announced at my work for SF : http://www.gamestop.com/browse?nav=16k-Street+Fighter+V

Really the only thing that bugs me is some of the UI stuff like having netfix buried in a drop down or the games library listing everything I've ever downloaded.  But this kind of stuff isn't a deal breaker and will prob be changed with an update.  Overall its a really nice little system and I'm pretty happy with it.

I'd crack into it and play some Blops with your buddies, it has solid multiplayer, co-op campaign, and zombies.

If you want good fighters Guilty Gear and MKX are quite a bit fun.  If you haven't played Wolfenstein you need to get on that.  I know I have said this before but Bloodborne owns.  There are def more than a couple great PS4 games to keep you busy til Feb.

  • I got a free PS3 like 5-6 years ago, and I've hardly played it yet. I need all these people to stop making games for a bit so I can catch up.

LOL that's exactly how I feel! I keep telling myself "just take a year off from buying games...maybe two, just to play catch up" and then something else comes out which appeals to me. I'm hoping that after The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy VII remaster/reimagining and No Man's Sky (confirmed June 2016) comes out in 2016, I might actually be able to stop for a year or so. *Edit- I just read that Dissidia Final Fantasy is getting a remaster but being released in Japan only so far. They're also remastering Beyond Two Souls from PS3 for the PS4.* After picking up COD BO3, Fallout 4, and SW BF recently, I vowed to buy less than 10 modern games (across all consoles) per year for the next couple years. Not only are they cranking games out faster these days but the magnitude and scope of some of these games is enough to keep anyone busy for a long time.

One of my bigest problems is time\location.  I can play games in short bursts due to time and my work from home job that keeps me on my toes with long periods of "Ok, I can't really leave the room but I have nothing important to do".  So a PSP with emulators is great for me, play a while, when I can't play, I just let the thing go into sleep, not even powering off or closing the emulator. For consoles, unless I move one up here (Been thinking about it), I can't play for long periods, and I have nothing good to sit on yet in the game room.   So my game play amounts to a bunch of short bursts of game time, emulation is great for that, modern consoles with save points 20 miles away and huge amounts of power consumption and heat loss, not so much.

I wonder if the PS4 uses more power than a nes, assuming so, but the nes wasn't effecent for it's time then, and now it's much worse, so who knows. Too lazy to look up a ps4's draw right now.

  • I had a PS4 since launch,it just died last week.Thankfully I was smart enough to purchase the 2 year extended protection plan.So I paid the $85 difference and pickup a Limited Edition 1TB Call of Duty bundle.I sold the Call of Duty pack in game, because I'm not a Call of Guy.All that being said,I've been a Sony Fan since the release of the original PSX.I did prefer the original Xbox over the PS2,but I liked the PS3 better than the 360.As others have already said, the PS4 is more "gamer friendly".And from all the side by side comparisons of both consoles, the PS4 comes out shining more the ONE .This is IMO.
  • I've had one for about six months and gradually it has taken all my "me time" away from retro consoles and reading. I'm probably putting in more hours now, at the age of 35, than I have for most of my life. So I guess that's a thumbs up from me. Most of that time has been sunk into The Witcher 3 but honourable mentions go to Axiom Verge, Mortal Kombat X, Black Ops 3 and Fallout 4. It's a great machine, really feels a lot more polished than the PS3.

I love your avatar btw OP, had no idea Blackadder ever made it across the pond (unless it's just a random img file you found).

This this this. It really baffles me whenever someone says that there aren't enough must-play titles to either justify buying a PS4, or playing the one they have. There are loads of great games for the PS4, and if you don't think there are enough good reasons to buy or play one, it's hard to think that anything current-gen would appeal to you right now. Right off the top of my head Fallout 4, The Witcher 3, Black Ops III, Bloodborne, GTA5, Far Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid V:The Phantom Pain, Star Wars Battlefront, Mortal Kombat X, Destiny, and The Last of Us: Remastered spring to mind. Any one of those could be a system-seller in my opinion, and most of them are either nearly endlessly replayable, or very very lengthy games. C'mon OP, have a little YOLO moment and open that fucker up!
  • PS4 since day 1 and love it. Play it all the time. Currently working on Fallout 4 which is an amazing game.
  • I want to upgrade to a PS4 but no backwards compatibility and having to pay to play online is a deal breaker for me. I just want to play the new Star Wars game.
