Magic The Gathering?

Just wondering if any of y'all play it or have played it?  If so, what kind of deck did you use?

  • Definitely! I have a number of different decks, but Goblin horde type decks are always the most fun for me. Black is really fast as well, so those decks can also get out of hand before you know it.
  • One of my friends uses a goblin deck, holy cow! It is really crazy

Goblin is even fun to watch!  Black is also great to use.

  • I played in the mid-late 90s until about early 00s, my first attempt at deck building was a creature based mono-black deck that longed for Blood Moons but couldn't get anybody to trade me some, next attempt was a more serious one, made a "Big Blue" type of deck which was very heavy in counters, my favorite part when playing this deck was successfully casting Amnesia (The Dark card) to my opponent, especially if he was playing a control deck too as it was devastating. Next I played a Sligh-type deck, don't remember much except that I had a lot of fun with this one and that it was Type 2 (now Standard) so I was able to play a few tournaments with it.

I left the game a little after the Urza's block but came back after some friends showed me Magic Online, got hooked again and this time I was playing a lot of drafts so I became competent at drafing & sealed deck tournaments. I tried my luck at my local Legions pre-release (I think, or maybe Scourge) and played through a split 1st/2nd place finish. Played a UG Maddness deck in local Standard tournaments during this time too, I liked how efficient it was.

I kept showing up for pre-releases for a while with good results but at the time I became hooked with poker and left MTG now for real (I have since left poker too after playing 3-4 years).

One of my younger brothers kept playing and became very good in the local tournament scene, he was still playing not too long ago, he tells me the game is now a lot different, I might give it a try online to see for myself.
  • I haven't played in years but I have a Goblin Horde deck i played alot, I also had a nice Spell deck Blue/Red that could tear people apart. My third deck that I would play frequently was a large creature deck Black/Green. Alot of friends that I would play with either moved away or stopped playing so I lost interest, there are alot of nerd stores that hold tournaments and such for magic but I was always too intimidated to compete.

I also hear that Magic is comming out with a new video game this summer (like they do every summer) but this one is supposed to get expansions when the physical card version does and allow for custom deck building.  If so I cant with to try it out, I always hated the other versions because once you unlocked all the decks the game got boring quickly with little to no customization.
  • I love Magic! Haven't played in a couple years though. My favorite deck is a black, red and blue artifact deck that is 80% Mirrodin block. Mirrodin, Darksteel and Fifth Dawn are my all time favorite block.

    I have a nice black/red dragon deck and black/white vampire/angel deck.
  • I played a lot almost 20 years ago when i was young, it was a lot of fun for a few years, still got my decks somewhere...
  • I used to play quite a bit, but haven't in like fifteen years or so. I had mainly Beta and early stuff that was either banned or no one wanted to play against it. So, I quit. I liked to mess around with white/black decks at the time. Master Decoy and Royal Assassin ftw.
  • Another "old" player here from the mid '90s to early 2000s. I still have all of my old cards and I really enjoy Tempest-Urza block stuff.

I play Commander occasionally with mostly green/black decks and Legacy with a Storm deck. My wife got into playing Standard at FNM recently and it's slowly getting me back into the game.
  • I play Modern primarily

I have Burn, Infect and CoCo Elves (but that one is getting sold, spent way too much on cards the past couple months and I wanna pay off my iPad. The deck buylists for over $300, so it goes bye bye lol. Was fun but I have two tier 1 decks and that's good enough for me)
  • I play causally with a group of friends. We mostly do EDH/Tiny Leaders now. We used to have big 4 on 4 team battles, but those have kind of dissipated.
  • I played from Revised up until 5th edition/Weatherlight, started back up around Mercadian Masques (which is around 8 or 9th edition, I think?). Lots of rules had changed, for the worse IMO, and kinda just forgot about the game.

I have a Type 1.5 deck that can destroy everyone in turn 1 75% of the time and by turn 3 the rest of the time. Well, it used to, doubt it handles well today.
  • I played a quite a bit a few years ago and played some competitive pauper (MUC) and legacy with burn or merfolk. I liked playing casual but I ruined that for myself by trying to play competitive couldnt really get back to a casual mindset until I spent 2 full blocks away from the game not even looking at the cards. When I had some friends decided they wanted to start playing so I figured i'd give it a shot again but after my friends started asking me for rulings because they knew i used to judge I got a little worried, but it wasnt until they ganged up on me and told me that a stack order resolution (which was basic first in last out scenario nothing really complicated) did not work as I knew it did I scooped my cards and havent shuffled a deck since ( we were playing at my house if that gives you an idea of how quickly the fun got sucked out of it for me)
  • WTF...I literally JUST came in here to start this thread! Talk about synchronicity, friends!

YES, I play! Only about a year in. I play Modern exclusively. I've got a killer green mono deck full of mana-ramping brutes that has yet to lose. We should post our decks here, guys and gals!

I've only been playing a few months lol, I made my little bro a deck and some how it ended up better than my own haha.  I use a green and red deck, I need to work on it a bit though

  • By the way, a quick way to lose friends is to use a combo of Liquimetal Coating and Splinter, targeting lands. Especially useful against mono-colored decks. This deck has almost gotten me a punch in the face, several times.
  • I played in grade and middle school thru blocks somewhere around one of the Urzas thru Scourge/ Onslaught range. I remember saving up lunch money (I didn't get an allowance as a kid, but I did get $5 for lunch four days a week, which was spent on actual food (pizza days and whatnot) once a month or so, to buy MTG stuff; I would play at a local spot once or twice a week. The lunch money would pay for the $5 casual tourneys and a pack or two. One time I saved enough for a box of Mirrodin. One of my awesome childhood memories.

Anyways I used to rock the OG Tooth and Nail deck (which was pretty damn beefy), Ravager (was so OP back in the day) and I played an elf deck a lot. I did decent at a few decent tourneys and I remember how pissed the older kids and adults would be since I was young owning them (I also got my decks beat a lot, though). Besides the tourney decks I'd just build casual silly ones with friends. I never really picked it back up (in the playing sense) since I was 15 or so. Nowdays MTG is still one of the items I buy a lot to resell. I have a good cache of investment cards and a few boxes stored away for return one day (hopefully). I will always have love for the awesome game despite how broken standard play seems nowadays.

Edit: my first WoW character's name was Urza after MTG, of course.
  • I remember the first time I became aware of Magic the Gathering. I was at my local comic shop buying some comics and I saw a woman in line behind me grab every booster pack available from a box on the counter. At that time, I thought maybe the were just trading cards like the comic and movie cards that they also sold at the counter. I made some offhand comment like, "You must really like those cards." and she explained "It's a game." I was pretty stumped. I had no clue how trading cards could possibly be used for a game, but the seed was planted. A short time later I bought a couple decks and I remember my stumbling attempts to try a teach myself the rules so my sister and I could play. When we were in Seattle visiting my Aunt, I glanced at the address printed on the box, I realized that the company that makes them was really close by so I asked if we could go visit them. This was probably around '94. Wizards of the Coast's offices were located in this little office park in Renton, WA. I went in, the receptionist said "Sorry, everybody's away at Gen Con right now, and she handed my sister and I each a starter deck and booster pack for stopping by. The game started to really explode in popularity shortly thereafter. I remember a period of time, when a group of maybe 30 or 40 of the kids from my high school would gather near the library during lunch to play magic instead of eating in the cafeteria.

There is a slight possibility that some of the numbers/counts are off here, as my deck was not in order when I just went through it. However - this deck absolutely SLAYS everything. I've been destroying mono-red aggro like nuts.

The odds of me ramping up to Terra Stomper and the game-ending Craterhoof Behemoth between turns 3 and 5 are so high with this combination of cards, that's it's just so much fun to play with. It really is all about getting the right combinations of cards and creating synergy, my friends. For instance: every single card in this deck has at least ONE secondary benefit that plays off of something else. Whether it's sorcery cards providing +1/+1 if you have a green creature on the field, to other creatures giving all other green creatures Trample until the end of the turn, or certain combinations make trample +X/+X creatures flyers WITH first strike; this deck makes people pissed SUPER fast. This is without a doubt the best Modern deck I've ever constructed, and I can see myself tempering it with time.

My other mono-green was built around Hornet Queen, and tons of token creatures. That shit got awesome fast, too, lol.
  • On old-school Magic memories; I got into it back in the early 90's in high school with some friends. We weren't allowed to play Magic in school because the teachers thought there was gambling involved(besides old-school ante rules). Really, I think the game just looked weird to them so they banned it. The teachers at my school were notorious for double-standards and singling out anything they though looked weird/different. So, we'd find the few teachers who were cool with us playing, and sneak out a few games here and there in those classes. It felt like some secretive group, being a Magic player. Moreso than even being into D&D.
  • Always wanted to get into the game but never had the time or patience to learn. Shame because it looks fun.

There's a much higher learning curve now than there was 10 years ago.  They keep adding in new abilities and whatnot to make the game new and interesting; a while back it was so straight-forward.

Yeah it certainly feels that way. I remember I learned the absolute basics of the game some 20ish years ago but my friends didn't want to be bothered with teaching me how to play and they were leagues ahead of me in terms of skill and decks. But my free time is precious nowadays so playing Magic is sadly something I'll never get to do.

No doubt.  20 years ago (right around the creation) had rules and usual tendancies like this: lay mana, tap mana, creature, wait a turn, attack with said creature, more mana down, tap more for more creatures, maybe a spell or two.  10-15 years ago it was more about spells and counters and tactics (the glory days in my opinion, also when I played a lot), nowadays the spells have spells and abilities, and the counters have counters and choices in which direction they go (this isn't really factual, but you get my drift... it got way more intense).

  • I play MtG Competitively, both in paper format and on MTGO.
  • I collected Star Wars CCG, but never learned how to play!
  • i always wanted to get into a trading card game but they all seem so complicated and not very beginner friendly

I think it has a lot to do with who you learn from. My group has taught a few beginners who now play at our level(kitchen table casual mostly). I'm fortunate enough to have a lot of close friends who all kind of got into it at the same time. I'm not sure how one person would learn by themselves, outside of just hanging out at a game store and talking to the regulars.
  • I've been wanting to get back into table-top gaming but finding a decent group is very difficult. Anyone have advice?
  • check your local comic and game shops... also meetup.com
