Maroon Japanese Gameboy SP (Its not any of the standard red versions)

Hey guys, I recently came across a japanese gameboy sp that is a maroon red color and appears to be a non-modified or pirated system. Does anyone have any information about this particular gba sp variation? I can't find info anywhere online.

Update: Added Board Photo's and it appears to be a legitimate board, there is no on board harddrive to store games as mentioned below in the bootleg. The board is nearly identical to the standard US GBA SP Boards. This is also definitely not just a paint job either, the plastice inside is the same maroon red color (just slightly lighter in color).

Update 2: I noticed that the board on the inside was a rev b board which is typically in an ags-101 model (back-lit model) gameboy, but the gameboy model is an ags-001 and is front lit. Do you think this could just be a case swap?

Are you sure the console itself is a bootleg? I know the game being sold in the video is, but I don't see an indication that the console is.
  • you'll have to open it up and take some pics. but the only time i'm seeing this color is packed with that pirate cart and box.

I'll upload some pictures of the inside during my lunch break around 12pm cst
  • If that's a bootleg, that's nice looking
  • I like that color. Looks nice.

The board pictures have been uploaded and after comparing it to another one of my GBA SP boards it is nearly identical. No significant variations of any kind
  • it's almost the same color as the base color of the Famicom SP. but a bit more purple. no doubt that's a legit system but where it came from and why it was packed with a bootleg game is beyond me
  • It's a replacement case- the two top screw covers on the screen do not look OEM. Also the other 3 screws covers- they are the wrong material as you can see the screws through them.
  • I think thats OEM Parts in a Replacement Case. Theres so many Resale shops that ive seen do this to turn a profit on Jumbled up Broken systems.
  • Sometimes bootleggers used official parts, if the factory was producing both bootleg and official products (something that sometimes happened). So although it looks like this mystery is solved (replacement case), I am just throwing out this tidbit as something that can be thought about when similar type questions arise.
  • Thank you so much everyone for helping me to figure out/confirm my theory about this gameboy. I really do appreciate all of your help.
  • Yeah, replacement case would be my guess. The moldings and label look a bit off.
