What does your woman think?

I think there was a post about if you bring the collection up on a date once - but I've just been inspired after talking to Aaronshea's wife, she called his collection beautiful!

Now, I've dated...haha, well, ya "dated" girls who liked my collection for nostalgic reasons. I had one "girlfriend" who sat me with me for two hours once and re-organize it. But really, most girls I've found find ANY type of collection weird.

What does your woman think?

*Edit* I also remembered a NSFW story about retro video games haha. I shouldn't share but it did involve Super Smash Bros. for N64 image

  • The girl I'm dating right now actually REALLY likes my collection. I was so afraid to tell her/show it to her, but she thinks it is actually one of the coolest things about me, haha.

Most times when she comes over, we sit down and play some game on the NES. Usually I'll be telling her about some game during the week, and then when she comes over on the weekend, we'll pop that game in.

She have any cute friends image
  • Steph doesn't mind my collection at all. She has helped me do several projects like the Expo, Ditka Build, and the HC Build. I try not to spend to much time doing collection stuff when she is around, but when I do she doesn't say anything about it at all. She plays DS ALL the time since I got her one, and we play her Wii together sometimes.

I was scared what she would think of it all at first since I have the Giant NES and Gameboy. I prepared her for it though, so it wasn't to big a shock lol. She told me that she would rather me hang out here at NA being a big sausagefest than out at some bar or club late at night. Works out good cause I would much rather be here handing with you chiefs image

  • She calls me a geek when I talk about NES games.
  • My wife is actually a big part of my collection. She has been there for it all the last 10 years and is my biggest supporter. I thinks she pretty proud of what we have collected so far.
  • My girlfriend thinks it's "awesome."
  • My fiance thinks it's okay. She loves playing some of the games, but doesn't understand the "collector" aspect of it, especially since I already can play all the games.
  • if i told any woman about it, it would prob scare her away
  • My wife really encouraged me to do the whole collection thing and is pretty into it. She helps me with it a lot. Our 3 kids are starting to get into it to.
  • My fiancee says as long as I can pay my bills and buy food for myself, she's perfectly fine with it. Although she doesn't entirely think it healthy when I drop four figures on video games in one shot, but then again, 98.8% of people wouldn't think well of it, lol.

I think its potentially good for the little kiddies, teach them to respect things more, hey, some kids, or actually most kids that I've ever known, now as well as back when I was one myself, were overall rather destructive and didn't care for anything they had, or anyone else's stuff at that. Its also good that they're exposed on a regular basis with all the older generation of gaming, that way they don't grow into spoiled, ignorant teens that look down on and mock what we grew up on, giving them a better understand of gaming as a whole, not just what's current.

  • No significant others for me at the moment, but the girl-shaped person I'm closest to is tolerant of all my talk about it, and occasionally impressed. Especially if it's something Tetris related. image
  • My girlfriend does like my collection even though it is still a small one. She collects My Little Ponies herself so she "understands the collecting mind" image And she likes to play these games with me so that's a plus too, and she likes the artwork on many game boxes.
  • lol, I just showed a good friend of mine the 'show your collection' thread, and she said 'please don't end up like that'.

    I'm sure she'll come around...
  • My GF don't mind me playing games. She kinda gets the collecting part once I showed her what certain games are worth .
  • my soon to be wife is suprisingly good about it...of corse im still under 100 games...she may not like it as much once it gets to the point where it takes up a whole room
  • My wife likes it except for the fact that I spend most of my time here on NA or cruisin ebay
  • My girl hates it, which is okay because I'm just doing this as a "fad" rather than a lifelong addiction. She expects me to save 100% of my income after bills towards a house and doesn't really know how much I spend on collecting. It's okay because I've slowed down a lot and will definitely be scaling back in about 3-4 months, which should coincide with when collecting really becomes "hard" (i.e. I'm not paying market value for F2, Panesians, Chubby Cherub, etc.).

I don't think video game collecting is anything to be ashamed of though, once you are a gamer then you are a gamer for life. I'd be more worried about trying to explain an Anime, Magic the Gathering, Star Trek, etc. collection to a woman since those are much more "taboo".
  • ^^ For shame! Where is my pitch fork?!!
  • My wife thinks I'm nuts. But she hasn't seen it all displayed. Once I get moved into my new house, shelves built, and it all set up, she will feel differently...or I will get a divorce. Either way, I win!
  • My wife doesnt seem to care. She knew what she was getting into when we got married. image
  • My girlfriend's initial reaction was that my collection was "adorable." She seems to like it a lot, granted she's more into SNES than NES, but we've sat down and played some games together.

She was also really excited that I had an extra SNES laying around that she could borrow for a while with a bunch of games. Currently she's struggling through A Link to the Past, but loving it.

She's also very supportive when I go to buy something because she knows I'll only buy it if I feel I'm getting a good deal.
  • My girlfriend likes it. I eased her into it, saying I just wanted the games I played when I was a kid. Pretty soon, she was like, "You played all 150 of these as a kid." 200 games or so later, she's helping me find them.

My wife and I stayed together because of Magic. When I was working to open my retail store, we'd spend long hours organizing cards to put into binders, alphabetizing and sorting by set. She just liked to spend time with me. And she saw what I was working towards, and it was a good thing. I wasn't like stalking chicks dressed up as Succubi or shit like that, I was putting my heart into something I understood, and it didn't matter that it was a "nerdy" thing.

When I left to open, she offered to come with and be my manager. Four years later we were married.

A real woman can see through that crap and understand the true dynamic of any love, any collection.

Being able to take care of something physical and valuable says something about the character of a person. Especially when it's deeper than a passing fad, and more realistic than a mad obsession.

    Amen brother! Amen.
  • I wouldn't say she loves or hates it. She occasionally buys me things to add to it. Now if I were to spend $100+ in one shot (and I didn't get like 50 games) then she would probably be upset. She plays it hard, but deep down I feel that she thinks its cool. Then again, she was the one that was trying to get me to sell out which only got me collecting again lol... who knows what she thinks

While this is a great idea in theory, I don't think it's that simple in reality.  If I can't even explain why I collect video games, then how in the world can I expect my girlfriend to understand?

Do I collect video games to relive my youth? Yes, but that only explains maybe 100 of the 500+ I have.

Do I collect video games to try new games?  Yes, but once again there are many games in my collection that I will probably NEVER play.

Do I collect video games to make money?  No, otherwise I'd strictly resell.

Do I collect video games just as a hobby that I enjoy?   Yes, but trying to explain "why I enjoy" this hobby is a lost cause and cannot be put into words (at least not by me).

Successful relationships are built on compromises.  I love absolutely everything about my girlfriend, from her looks and appearance to personality to her financial responsibility (she actually does not like to shop!!!!), with the only exception being that she doesn't understand my collecting passion.  Rather than be selfish and throw her to the curb because she isn't "real", I'd rather scale back my collection to what I can't live without and balance time between her and video games...
  • My "girlfriend" thinks that i will never get a wife EVER. lol. Even though she likes to take the crap and stare at it she does not like the fact that that's my major hobby.

She plays only new realistic games while i'm on the contrary a 8bit man.
  • My wife loves all of the gaming/collecting/game rooms. She plays games with me and my friends/her friends and she comes to the flea market to looky loo with me when I go look for games.

C'mon man, you can't just mention something like that and then not tell us.  We wanna hear all about the Smash Brothers story.

And to contribute to this thread: The one girl I dated since starting to resell/collect thought it was cool, but would sometimes call me a dork in a teasing sort of way.  Sometimes she would help me by taking pictures and sorting and other crap like that.  The last girl that I brought home with me enjoyed playing SMB3, which is the one NES game that will get you all the ladies.
