What did I just find? Need Famicom help!!

Hey guys,

I picked up a lot off craigslist earlier, and it had a bunch of Famicom stuff included. I know absolutely nothing about the Famicom. I did some googling, and realized that my Famicom has been AV Modded? And that I may have a Hong Kong Disk System? And the "Magic Card" thing is a game doctor? I have no idea. Hoping you guys can help me figure out what I have, and if it's even worth anything. There was no Power Cord included, so i can't test anything unfortunately. The guy said he found them while cleaning out his parents house, and that it hasn't been touched in over 15 years.

And 15 Bootleg "NiNIENDO" Games. Of course, I can't verify any of the titles, but going by what the dust sleeve says, they are apparently:
  • Monty On The Run
  • Ice Hockey
  • Power Mite ????
  • Druid
  • Halley Wars
  • "Gauntlet" ???
  • Raijin ?
  • Reflect World
  • Wrestling
  • Square Runner 'Jump n Jack' ???
  • Mah-Jong
  • Space Rescue ??
  • Falsion
  • Puzzler?

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Wait, those are bootleg?

    Aren't those Disk System games?
  • Wow very strange famicom! Yes your Famicom has Composite outputs BUT it looks very factory. No signs of the original channel selector switch etc. And it has a custom sticker above it. All very professional looking.

Also you have a rare Famicom "magic card" disc copier unit (big black box) These were used to copy/pirate games.

I would love to look at the motherboard.

I have never seen a Famicom with a rear port like that.  Very very interesting.  It's either a well done mod from years ago OR a rare variation.  (or possible bootleg console) the rear ports for the controllers are not typical Nintendo style.

    Either way it has value.

They say Niniendo instead of Nintendo. From the pics he sent me before I bought the lot, I thought they were real as well lol

I appreciate your input! I will attempt to take it apart sometime this week/weekend, and get some pictures for you. Any idea of value on the Magic Card? I have no use for it and probably would like to trade/sell it away.

  • I have no idea but would love to buy it.

I collect and restore weird items like this.

Before you open the famicom can you upload pics of the controller.  I have a feeling this console is a well done bootleg or Korean release

Can't believe I didn't even notice the controllers!

  • Definitely bootleg disks. The copy protection on disks was a very simple mechanical key, and easy to defeat. I'm guessing that the Famicom is a clone, as they AV outs cutouts look a little too good to be a mod. Be interested to see more pics.

The Magic Card is the star of this lot to me. I'm guessing the disks are hacked games to go with it. You can find out a lot more about these copiers here: http://www.famicomdisksystem.com/game-doctor-copiers/

    Nice grabs!

EDIT: Just saw those controller pics. Definite clone.
  • yeah the magic card is pretty cool I really wish I had a copy master disk so I could back up my famicom games somewhat easily (already have an early FDS that should be able to re-write)
  • Disk system and Cartridge adapter are the real deal tho, throw some "C" batteries in there and fire it up!!
  • The Famicom machine is a clone. Judging from the rest of the stuff in the set, the Famicom clone is probably a real one, I mean 1:1 copy, as opposed to a Nintendo on a Chip version (NOAC), which all of the newer machines have. IMO, the clone is still a bit generic, compared to the Micro Genius clones and what not, but still a neat find. TBH though, the clone is probably only worth about $25 tops, if you can find the right buyer, maybe $40 on ebay if you find an uneducated buyer.

The disk system looks legit, and probably is...I've never seen a fake one before.

The disks are copied / fakes, and the Magic Card is a copier used to copy (and play) copied Famicom disks.

Now for the goods and the bads. The Magic Card is the highlight of this set, and if I still used paypal, I would make you an offer on it. Famicom copiers aren't the easiest to find these days, despite the fact that they were allegedly available back in the day without trouble.

The disk system might be okay, but it also might need to have the head realigned or the belt replaced. FDS machines are very finicky, and I personally say a prayer every time I want to play a disk game.

As for the copied disks themselves, they are neat as a novelty, but the games aren't anything special (like Link Mario Bros., or Mariovania), and also there is a chance that you won't even be able to get them up and running. I have a stack of around 40 copied Famicom disks (with art work), and no one wants to purchase them from me, and I can't get most of them running on my set up, but suspect that it is my FDS machine, not the disks themselves. But with a situation like that, obviously people aren't willing to pay a lot.
  • Thanks for the help, I appreciate all the input. I'm curious and would like to see if everything works. Any idea what a 'clone' Power Adapter would be? Also looks like the disk system has an power adapter as well?
  • For the disk system a sega genesis model 1 ac adapter will work just fine on it,same for the famiclone.
  • Base console is definitely a clone. Real Famicom has a mic port on controller 2. Is there a label on the bottom with power specs?
  • It is a clone, but a very close copy of the original Famicom. In fact, the back panel is what the real Famicom should have shipped with. Also, the controllers have a really thoughtful, Turbo Grafx/PC Engine turbo switches. The only thing that would have improved it would be ports for the "joysticks" on the front of the machine. I think your clone is the same one shown here : http://forum.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?120317-What-Famiclone-should-I-get&p=1411296&viewfull=1#post1411296

Here are the insides of what appears to be a slightly later revision : https://133fsb.wordpress.com/2009/10/21/restoring-a-nice-famiclone-part-1/

    Thanks, that was very informative.

Anyways, I haven't tested anything yet, but everything will probably be for sale since i don't really collect famicom/imports. PM me if interested.

  • If you get around to testing the Disk system Id be interested.
