TLSROM and Space Harrier Repro Help

Okay, so I tried using NES Play Action Football to make a repro of Hammerin Harry. Upon starting it up, i noticed the mirroring was all off. I am taking a look at the board and i don't see any way of switching the mirroring to be correct. Also, i was attempting to make a repro of Space Harrier using Faxanadu, and the only system it works on is the FC Twin. Every other clone console or real hardware, it doesn't work. Does anyone have the solution to these issues? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • *sigh*, TLSROM has a different mirroring mode from TLROM. You're either gonna have to cut CHR A17's trace and connect it to the MMC3's CIRAM A10 line, or get a TLROM board.

    You should really research NES boards before using them.

  • Sorry, i didn't think their would be any other variants to MMC3 boards besides TLROM, TSROM, TGROM, TL1ROM, TKROM. But hey, I learn new things about repros thanks to you and the other kind individuals who share tips and tricks on this subject, and I truly appreciate it. Also, I have done research on this stuff, but again their are still things that I don't know until after I run into a conflict. Now as for Space Harrier, i have gone over all the traces and even changed the wires, but no results. I did research the board and it uses a standard SGROM, so either I have a faulty board or theirs something wrong with the EPROM. Because again, it boots up just fine on my FC Twin (which i can't play because for some reason controller input doesn't work on the NES side, but does work on SNES side).

    (A little side note though Guntz, I still have that Final Fantasy 1+2 cart you traded to me, and it still works fantastically! thanks again for that )
  • Well, it never hurts to reference the material on the Nesdev Wiki. At least converting TLSROM to TLROM is relatively easy.

    For Space Harrier, did you lift up EPROM pin 1? How fast is the EPROM you're using? Try not to use anything slower than 150ns.

    I'm happy to hear your FF1+2 cart is still working good for you.
  • Here are the pics for Space Harrier. See anything wrong?

  • space harrier is 128K unless you are using a non-stock rom. so, pin 30 does not need to be jumpered, and pin 31 should be left down ideally.
  • Well, i got nothing. I tried that and no dice.
  • What kind of EPROM is it? Is it a 27C010, 27C1000, 27C1001 or something similar?
  • AM27c020-120DC
  • Did you double the ROM before trying to burn it?

    You can try setting pin 30 (A17) to gnd/vcc, doing that will set the chip to 1Mbit.
  • Yes, i did
  • UPDATE: I found that reconnecting Pin 31 causes your systems to not power on. So I updated the wiring!

    I am happy to report that Space Harrier does work! So, i guess if a 27c020 is being used, the pinout works like this:

    Bend up Pins 1, 2, 24, 30, 31

    Pin 2 --> Hole 24

    Pin 24 --> GND (Pin 16)

    Pin 30 --> GND (Pin 16)

    Thank you to Guntz and Lincoln for your help! ^^
  • If leaving pin 31 down causes your system not to boot, you have something seriously wrong with your cart or console.
  • perhaps it's the cartridge. My NES toaster works perfectly fine. I even tested it on my Retro Duo, and it did the same thing until after i removed the wire connecting Pin 31 back to it's hole. I tested it on A Retro Entertainment System and an FC Twin aswell, and it did the same thing to them aswell. So perhaps their was an issue with the cartridge, but what matters is that the repro now works.
  • I should note that i did not test it on my Famicom with the use of an adapter or on my Top Loader, but I doubt it would make any difference. I probably would have had the same issue anyways. Also, i forgot to mention that Hammerin Harry still did not work properly. So i am going to just say screw it and just find an Astyanax or something to use as a donor. Well, at least I have another shell if i ever get to ordering FME-7 boards or TNROM boards.
  • I got Hammerin Harry working using a Robocop that happened to have a TLROM board. Thank you everyone for your help! ^^
