Battletoads woes
Last night I was really inspired to beat Battletoads without any warps or codes.
So sat down I did, and I made it much farther than ever before.
But those damn rat races. I was up 'til 1:30 AM...
How do you beat the third rat race? >.<

2)Make those turns super tight... you can't overshoot it even a little.
3)when falling through extended sections, master the "nudging" technique so that you can rock left and right in the air without hitting any of the platforms
4)when Giblet is about to pass you, hit him into the wall. He will bounce off it, and go back the other direction, buying you about a half second.
5)remember, the bomb is in the middle!

Thanks. I mastered 1-3. Can't do much of it any faster.
I'm glad auto-run is enabled during this sequence.
But I was so panicky running that I never tried actually hitting the rat. Or maybe I wanted to beat him the honest way lol
Thanks

I had a feeling Bootsy rules. He's the one that got me wanting to beat Silver Surfer. I can't wait for more of his videos!
I've accepted the fact I'll never beat this one. I've been defeated.
A similar tip for the turbo tunnel: When you get to the section where you have to dodge 4 little ships, stay in the bottom left corner and you don't have dodge them at all.

A tip on the wookie hole that Bootsy missed: If you stay in the bottom-center of the screen, the electric fences won't reach you and you don't have to do anything.

True, I knew about the Wookie Hole tip and used it during my playthrough, but I think at the part with the 4 ships in the Turbo Tunnel I always just kind of jumped past them on a prayer. Booty's tip worked great but yours is even better.
It will be interesting to see what kind of tips Bootsy has for the underwater level. Dealing with the electric eels completely sucks.

I understand where you're coming from -- several times during my last playthrough what kept coming to mind was how needlessly difficult so many sections of this game are (for instance the airplane missile sequence -- seriously!?). They are way beyond Dark Souls hard here sometimes, to the point of just plain unfair. It's like they didn't playtest the game at all and didn't realize how sadistic some of their coding was.
If the game wasn't so culturally iconic and didn't look and sound so good, I'd have thrown in the towel by now.

Others have said it before... but if the game was set to a "normal" difficulty, would we still be talking about it 24 years later?

Yeah, I still enjoy playing it, I've just learned to stop caring after a certain point. If I did I'd be crazy by now.
Other games I've spent time on and put work in to get better. There's no point with this one. I know my plateau, the game is still fun as hell playing it to that point, so I still like to play every now and again.

I don't think anyone was saying it needed a "normal" difficulty. The difficulty is what it is, that's the exact thing I've accepted. Hard as hell, still a great game to play.

That's exactly the thing though, the developers were perfectly aware of how hard and sadistic their games were, because all they did was sit around programming and playtesting.
As a result they naturally got sh*thot amazing at their games, and _therein_ lies the fun part: they proceeded to make their games even harder to challenge themselves.
So it's sort of like an evil circle, especially for the innocent consumer lol.
Iwata alluded to this very fact in the episoe of GameCenter CX he was on - which is a definite must-watch btw.
I need a new copy of Battletoads. Someone on NA should help me rectify this so I can join in on the masochism!

Im currently attempting a world record for Silver Surfer because of one of his videos lol. I'm getting damn close too.

I'm still on the last level of Silver Surfer, and making zero progress lmao. Bootsy is my NES hero. I'm amazed it took that guy as long as it did to start appearing regularly with his gaming wisdom. It's like this dude was just in a basement somewhere mastering the hardest NES games of all time, while James and Mike where talking about them
I'm stoked to see your score if you manage to capture it!

I totally agree. The last level is f**king hard compared to the others and it's already a difficult game. The trick is beating it in one try after all the others. I have succesfully beaten the game on 1 life with a score of around 750,000. The world record is in the 850,000 range. I will def make a thread on here if I ever do it. The record holder also uses a turbo controller. I literally cannot play the game with one. I count while I slam on the button so holding it down throws off my whole run.

Bootsy's character on Board James is absolutely hilarious too. "Gee willikers fellas!"
He's also a very gifted songwriter-- I believe he wrote and performed most of the songs for Board James.
Heck of a guy!
He is severely underrated among those guys I am glad they are giving him his own section within the Youtube Channel he really deserves it and look forward to what they throw up there.

Yes! The key with tha majority of difficult NES games is the "One run or GTFO" philosophy. If I get a groove and I'm plowing through, it's almost ALWAYS a done deal. If I hit a snag and start getting pissed, it's all over. I think it's very interesting that you opt out of a turbo controller; I can't play Silver Surfer without one. It's all about moving that big-ass sprite around, especially on the top-down levels. I'm using the Joycard exclusively for that one.
Amazing job with the score, my man. I didn't even know there was a world record.
James and Mike make entertaining videos, but they don't seem to be very good at video games. Not knocking them, I'm not good at some of these games either. But when Mike in the last video said Kid Icarus was one of the hardest NES games, it's like, whaaaaat? I beat that as a rental when I was a kid. Bootsy seems to know what's up.
I raised an eyebrow at that statement too.
I mean there's definitely some challenging moments especially earlier on, learning how to deal with the Grim Reapers, learning how the upgrade system works, and dealing with the Eggplant Wizards in the first labyrinth. But once you figure those three things out the rest of the game is pretty easy IMO.
I think Mike is a pretty good gamer. Not nearly on Bootsy's level, but good. James isn't very good, but he's not trying to be. He's just having fun and I can appreciate that.
But even if I *could* consistently beat Battletoads, doing it with the camera rolling on a popular YouTube show knowing thousands of people will be watching would make me nervous. That's why I'm so impressed with events like AGDQ, and people like Bootsy.
I just beat the turbo tunnel for the first time ever this year and am now dying on the snow level but I'm keeping at it.
If 10 year old me could beat Ninja Gaiden, 35 year old me can beat Battletoads.
The ice level I found the worst parts are when you have to jump on the damn moving platforms.... the occasional snowman punched me in the face to.
I purposely reset just to practice the first section over again so I can get through it faster.

Good luck! Bootsy made it look easy
He wasn't joking when he said it gets much harder after the ice level!
A few tips I found in dealing with the ice level -- when the snowmen are rolling snowballs down the inclines, I like to stick close to the walls and jump over each snowball until it's safe to jump to the next incline.
When you are waiting for the first floating platform to appear, just keep jumping up and down over the safe area and the platform will come to you. (And of course duck right after)

Yeah, who knew the Turbo Tunnel was basically the tutorial for the other race levels.
