Alright I am not consistent enough on the ice level yet there are a couple places that will take 3 lives pretty quick but I will get there.... I got passed that log stuff actually pretty easy and those whirlpools weren't to bad although I did get caught on one that lead to my game over.
I honestly love NES and SNES games for this kind of stuff you just progressively feel yourself getting better and you see it happen before your eyes, you don't get that from most systems after those generations.
These are a true testament to your patience, reflexes, memory skills and it feels damn satisfying.

Very well said, my friend. It's a true test of patience, persistence, and willpower of the highest-calibur. You definitely don't get that with modern games IMHO. It's like weightlifting...but with NES skills
I think you're right. I got past the rat race thanks to the tips here, then they drop you directly into a boss battle.
Luckily it's the easiest boss battle yet (except for the stage 1 boss), but right after that, THE SPEED UNICYCLE THINGIES!!!!!!
It's impossibru. Literally impossible....
We'll see what Bootsy has to say about this section, but I think I quit. I'm not meant to beat Battletoads and I'm okay with that.
Unless somebody has some seriously good f'n tips for this section, I'm done.
Glad to see you beat the 3rd rat race! See? You're making good progress. Don't give up!
Beating Clinger Winger legit just takes memorizing the turns. Also make sure your controller is good!
Until then, here's how you beat the Clinger Winger (extra cheezy style):
Everytime you hit a 90 degree turn, hit pause, press in the new direction, unpause. Almost impossible to lose that way. When you fight the orb at the end, just punch/headbutt it into the wall... punch it some more... pick it up... throw it at the wall. Wash - rinse - repeat.
Unless somebody has some seriously good f'n tips for this section, I'm done.
No real tips I know of, unfortunately. It's all memorizing the course and getting reaction times down to milliseconds.
Sigh. Well I got pretty dang far.
Here's what I learned.
If there was any sort of indication of how close I was to the finish line, that would've been good. I hope there's not multiple parts to this and the whole level is one run.
From memory I went right, down, left, down, left, down right, up, right, up, left (on a ceiling), down, right, down, left, up, left, down, left, up, right (at the top of the whole area), down, left, up, left, down, left, up, right (long straighataway) I think this is the farthest I get before I die.
Also if my thumb was even slightly diagonal and not -dead straight on- in the direction I wanted to go, it slows down my speed so tremendously I may as well just kill that life off and start over.

Oh yeah, that's where I rage quit as well, and that was months ago. Haven't touched the game since and I feel much better now.
I knew I could have used the pause trick, but that felt so lame that I preferred quitting. Might as well use auto-pause on a turbo controller, or a game genie and skip the level entirely.
It's one of the worst levels in all of video game history.

You may be right -- I think I'll try again one of these days legit without cheesing the stage out. But I'm going to give it a rest for a few days. Just getting *to* that part is a chore, and honestly my hands got tired playing it. It's been awhile since that's happened.
Bootsy is a great retro gamer, probably in the top 1% and definitely a lot better than me. I don't think he's as amazing as some people make him out to be though. Most top speed runners impress me a lot more, especially runners that choose ridiculously hard games like I Wanna be the Boshy or Super Meat Boy.
Of course Korean pro SC2 players are better than anyone, but that's a whole different type of gaming

That is what I like about him... he is for sure just a regular dude... those speed runners are a whole different world.

I agree. He seems like a great guy who enjoys playing retro games and is also amazing at them. I don't think he's a top tier gamer, but it doesn't make me dislike him.
If you guys are having trouble on stage 11 (cycle level) you probably have a messed up controller or are playing on an emulator or something. I honestly think that's one of the easiest levels in the entire game, and I'm not kidding at all.

Agreed. The timing isn't too bad, you just really have to make sure your thumb is really on the correct direction. A crappy controller can definitely make it a hell of a lot tougher to complete.

How many times have you done Clinger Winger though? I've only done it once so far.
I only had a finite number of lives to memorize the path.
I'll try a different controller. Was just using a standard NES controller but maybe the diagonals are a bit sensitive on it or something.
This thread got me so friggin' re-excited about this game (coupled with Bootsy's wisdom and charm), that I just re-purchased a cart-only copy from a member. In a few days, I'll be joining in full-fledged on all the action and aggravation. Keep this thread going, fellas!
My copy is in the mail and scheduled for arrival on Thursday, because dra600n is the man
How's progress coming, guys?
I ... haven't tried again. Well, I did once but I didn't even make it past the airplane section.
For now I've moved on to Geometry Wars 3 and Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter. I'll come back to this later but you should definitely keep us updated! I'm interested to see how you do.
I'm really going to give it a solid shot as soon as it arrives. I've been watching Bootsy's walkthrough guide, as well as the AVGN playthrough on and off for days.
It's like training for the Kumite. Break the bottom brick
If you don't mind using Warps... the snake pit is the level that it will really help a lot, as it lets you skip all the hard parts of the snake pit, and all of level 7 (which is also pretty crazy).
Comments
I've watched a lot of AVGN, but this is the first I've ever heard of this Bootsy character
He appears more often in the "Board James" series and the odd time on "James and Mike Mondays"
Rarely does he appear in an actual AVGN episode.

I havent played it much but I am at the Snake Pit just trying to master the last section, I can get to with losing about 3-4 lives on average.
We all have to beat it....just to say we did.

That snake pit eats a lot of lives ... You really have no choice but to memorize the paths and speeds of each snake and there's a lot of 'gotchas'.
