N64 game not working even after cleaning

Hello folks, i have a problem here that i hope can be fixed instead of just replacing the game.

I had gotten Pokemon Stadium the other day and the metal contacts were grimey and rusty. I opened the cart case up, cleaned it with Brasso and then rinsed with 91% alcohol. It looks very very nice and shiney now, all cept one metal contact on both sides has this white streak on the outside on one side. As in the with label up, left side going from top to bottom of the contact has a white streak. (In pictures, it looks like a black streak, not sure why)

Game wont work, i turn system on and the screen does a quick flicker, get two white lines and then nothing. (using an old school flat tv i got from thrift store so its the tube tv but not so old that the duck hunt zap gun will work)

I try my Mario Tennis, screen flickers, two white lines, and then N64 logo 100% of the time without fail.

Despite the second game working without flaw, i cleaned the inside of the console and all that good stuff.

I also tested both carts on a friends N64, mario works and pokemon stadium does not.

I remember in the past when N64 was current,i had some games that were in WAY worse condition than this one and worked just fine. The ebay seller claims it worked before he shipped it out and from the 1k+ good reviews, i wouldnt think hes lying.

So what could be the problem? Id rather not send it back and get a refund if this can be fixed

  • Every once in awhile I run into N64 carts that flat out just won't work. If the seller sold the game as working and even after all your cleaning you can't get it to fire up, I'd just send it back.
  • I have had games that tend to freeze up after a bit, but after cleaning it some more, the game would work. In your situation, I would just return the item. If a game is said to be in working condition and it does not fire up, I would return it. You have already cleaned it and it still doesn't work. You might have to pay for return shipping depending on their listing details. Keep in mind there is usually a return period.
  • try some 0000 fine steel wool on that white mark. still doesnt work? return it
  • a cartridge of Mario kart 64 I got off ebay had the same problem.. I could never get it working despite the contacts being clean/corrosion free. I recommend contacting the ebay seller and returning the item, or simply getting a full refund and throwing the cartridge away. pokemon stadium is a relatively low value game and there are plenty more on ebay. it is disappointing but I would just get another copy from ebay.
  • I apologize for this late response. I used the 0000 steel wool and still no luck. So i will be returning it to the seller today. Thank you all for the responses/help, i really appreciate it. I will take this as a glass is half full and buy a pokemon stadium with the transfer pak included instead of the base game.

I find this very interesting tho as ive never encountered a game so clean that refused to even fire up to the logo screen.
  • I hesitate to put a lot of effort in cleaning games that are sold as "working" and don't fire up, just because the seller might claim that the game was "ruined" by my cleaning. Hopefully returning the item and purchasing the other works out better for you.
  • could've shorted out on a previous owners console?
