If you don't mind using Warps... the snake pit is the level that it will really help a lot, as it lets you skip all the hard parts of the snake pit, and all of level 7 (which is also pretty crazy).
I will only use warps for practice purposes, to take breaks from parts that are becoming an issue, and continue playing on different portions to keep my skill up.

How's progress coming, guys?
I havent played it much but I am at the Snake Pit just trying to master the last section, I can get to with losing about 3-4 lives on average.
We all have to beat it....just to say we did.
That snake pit eats a lot of lives ... You really have no choice but to memorize the paths and speeds of each snake and there's a lot of 'gotchas'.
I'm ready for the challenge. I've never made it that far, so it's a whole new world for me.

I usually end up losing most of them at the third screen where there is the "spike pit" but I think next time I get there it will be a whole different story.
The next screen though I have no idea whats in store for me I am just winging this game with no assistance.
When he jumped over that last snake in the snake pit I about died... I'd been hanging off the tail of that snake and falling back down onto it, then dealing with the two other snakes later. He skips so much by jumping over that gap at the last second.
Also didn't know you can juggle the rat miniboss on the surfing stage.
I hope Bootsy keeps these videos going. A lot of times I find myself looking at speedruns, or silent playthroughs to figure out strats for beating some of these hard NES games, but Bootsys chill/everyman style is really helpful since he's not some gameplaying machine like some of these speedrunners are
I just popped the game in for the first attempt today, and I made it to the LAST section of the Turbo Tunnel on my first try, lmao. Bootsy's wisdom really pays off here; all the parts that used to cause me grief are absolutely cake now. Working on completing the level as we speak.
Made it about 2/3 of the way through the ice caverns, and then just kept getting my ass handed to me by the spikes/urchin looking things. Taking a break for now, but you bet your behind I'll be tackling this again later on.
What an amazing feeling to finally conquer a level that haunted my childhood, lmao.

After doing turbo tunnel you gotta take a well deserved break.
I made it passed the snake pits last night and got to that flying vehicle section and will pick it up again tonight I have a feeling I will be stuck there for awhile.

Nice dude! Bootsy makes the snake level look so easy; I already know I'm going to get stuck there for a bit.
I'm more excited for this game now than I ever have been before. I gotta dig out my Battletoads shirt, lol
So I'm persevering through the Ice Cavern stage now. I keep subconsciously jumping into the spiked ceiling urchins when the snowman throws his snowballs (the part with the pillar gaps). It's like I know not to do it, but I do it every single time.
I'll be spending a bit of time today working through that section.
I just had a stellar run, and made it all the way through the first level AND Turbo Tunnel perfectly, without getting hit OR dying once!
On my last credit, I made it to the very last section of the Arctic Caverns (with the silver shells/rising barriers), and kept getting crushed on the VERY LAST ONE before the final platform fall to the end of the level. Getting SO CLOSE, dudes!

N"ice" man, I find that level to be one of the first real pissers, so many instant death spots..... I still have a bit of trouble on the snake pits so I never have many lives for the fire level but I have passed the snake pit at least multiple times now......... Also nice addition to the signature Rust in Peace is an awesome album I have mine signed by Mustaine when I met him.

Good eyes RIP is one of my favorite records of all time. I met Mustaine as well in '05 and had him sign mine as well
I just completed Arctic Caverns for the first time ever, and I'm now moving onto Surf City!
EDIT: made it to Blag on my last life and got my ass kicked, lmao. My strategy thus far is to play until I get a firm game over (I.e. I'd have to start from level 1 again and grind back) so I don't burn out. So far my sessions are averaging about 25-30 minutes, which I feel is perfect. I'm getting through the first three levels faster and faster, often without taking a single hit
Glad to see you're plugging away and making progress. This is definitely one of those games that you feel yourself getting better at the more you play. You analogy to weightlifting is very apt I think.

I did the same thing man I gave up on trying to progress once I got passed the ice caverns and just focused on getting up to that point without dying.
I am making it to the lava stage flying section now with 5-7 lives on my first continue but havn't played in a couple days... been trying to mod my turbografx 16 for RCA.
I made it through the Arctic Caverns dying only once this last run; I'm getting way tighter with that level.
I still get caught up on the last cyclone in the water before Blag. I managed to beat him once, and make it to the last mine screen before my perma-game over. I've realized that you can escape water cyclones sometimes by mashing the B button (they still sap your health). Slow and steady...
The whirlpools can be easily avoided as long as you are all the way to the top or to the bottom accordingly... They always leave a gap and you don't even have to worry about the timing of the rotation.

I didn't even realize this until my very last run...thank you, sir. One of those things that looks WAY more challenging, so you make it so, lol. Blag is a cake walk. Now it's just those damn mines, and this level is in the bag!
I honestly can't believe I've made it this far in the amount of time that I have.

I found that level to be way easier than the ones prior to it with the exception of the 1st level.
I think I passed the first surfing section the first attempt and the mine section maybe only a few deaths.
Good to hear you are making progress man I have not played it in a few days unfortunately.

Yeah man, I'd say playing daily has definitely upped my BT skills. Giving it another shot in just a bit.
I've beaten the surfing stage, and I'm officially at Snake Pit. I'm making it consistently to the second to last snake before the end of the level, but keep getting sent into the spike balls to the left due to the speed The last two snakes are so damn fast, there's zero reaction time lmao. I can feel myself closing in on this level very soon.

It's hard to give up when you're the Bob Ross of NES gaming. Bootsy is my NES hero.
Also didn't know you can juggle the rat miniboss on the surfing stage.
He totally is the Bob Ross of gaming lol
Although it obviously only works if a real expert is playing.
Tom Votava's walkthroughs are similar where he explains how to go through the game.
I just legit beat Turbo Tunnel for the first time in my life.
Thank you Bootsy!
Ice level, here we go!
