I feel the same way about boss #6 in Blaster Master.  Even though the pause glitch works on five of the bosses, that's the only one I actually use it on because of how cheap he is.  His arms are so long they can hit you whenever they feel like, and they shoot those little ice shots out them that there's almost no way to avoid getting hit when he decides it's time for you to get hit.  But to be fair, I do try to beat him normally without using the glitch first, and I have beaten him that way in the past, but if he hits me then it's glitch time.
  • Great review on the original Mega Man Game... I have played through and beaten all 6 classic Mega Man games on the NES numerous times. I do like and appreciate the first one, but I do find myself playing the others more often. Each game built off of the previous and added great innovations..

    2 - E tank

    3 - the slide

    4 - charged buster

5 - gravity man's stage!! (really cool weapons and robot masters)

    6 - jet pack!

Overall I do enjoy the first one and its difficulty. ( I only play 2 on difficult setting) The drawbacks in my opinion on the first are:

    - controls seem a little bit slippery, feels like in later games they tightened it up

    - not all the weapons are fun/useful. Gutsman, Iceman, Bombman... I rarely use these weapons. I generally find myself playing with the buster most of the game and then Elecman or Cutman weapon

    - graphics and sound are not as good as the sequals

I do think its a very good game, those are just the reasons I find myself playing the later games more often.

The funny thing is my favorite Mega Man game tends to change often depending on what I've been playing the most recently. I would say now is 5. In my opinion 5 has the best and most diverse robot masters and weapons. I find myself using all of the weapons at some point during the various stages (yes even power stone!). I can beat all of the robot masters with the blaster in 5, and get through pretty much the entire game with only the blaster. But since the other weapons are so fun to use I find myself using them more often than in any other game. Ex. Mega Man 2, pretty much just use Metal Blades and the blaster. 6 is probably my least favorite on the NES, its fun... I do enjoy punching things to death and using the jet pack (rush) But I'll stick to the earlier games.

So OP now that you have 1,2,3 you need 5 and 4 for sure. I'd say get 5 first if you can, I like it over 4.

3 was the first one I ever had, fell in love with the game and have been playing them ever since.
  • I thought about making this a thread in itself but I might as well post it here. Mega Man 3. Where should I start? For some reason I'm having a real difficulty with it. I beat Mega Man and Mega Man 2. Why is 3 giving me problems. I can't even beat a Robot Master.

I definitely think 1 is inferior to 2 and 3, but, as you said, it's a great game. The E tanks and the slide are awesome additions. I actually just recently managed to get a hold of 5, and I believe I will be getting 4 shortly. That only leaves 6. I really want to get the whole NES Mega Man series CIB now, seeing as I love 1-3. I'm hoping to do some comprehensive series review when I finish them all.

As for the drawbacks you mentioned, I didn't notice the controls being too slippery except at the platforms on rails at Gutsman's stage, though that could be operator error. The weapons are definitely lacking in usefulness across the board, and while the graphics and music are certainly less polished, I still think they are great. It's cool to look at 1 and see how it grew in 2, 3, and (hopefully) beyond.

Mega Man 3 is awkward because it has two weakness chains that don't overlap.

    Top > Shadow > Spark > Magnet > Hard

    Needle > Snake > Gemini

I'd start with Top Man. Not too hard to get to, and he is fairly easy to beat with the regular buster. Shoot at him until he has his three tops out, then slide away from him to dodge the tops. Wait until he charges you, jump over him, and repeat until he's dead. Use the Top Spin on Shadow Man, and then use the Shadow Blade on Needle Man (not his weakness, but it does more damage than the buster). That way, you'll get the Rush Marine and Rush Jet very early in the game. After that, you can go after either weakness chain, since you have weapons from both of them.

Hope that helps! Keep us posted on how it goes!

  • Never thought to use the slide in a boss fight for some reason. I get I have to get more used to it.
  • This entire thread has been a good read. Mega Man is awesome. There's no doubt in my mind it should get as much love as it does.

Personally, I grew up on 2 & 4. Those were the ones we had as kids, and I remember seeing Mega Man 1 once. ONLY ONCE.

So when I got it as an adult I was blown away. The controls aren't quite as tight as the others but in no way are they a hinderance.

I think Elecman gives Mega Man his best weapon in the whole series. When I first got that one it melted my brain.

I've beaten the game, but only using multiple continues, never front to back. I remember being really stoked when I figured out the jumping pattern for the big orange blob (yellow devil) and his transferring body parts. I love kicking his ass.

I've never heard of/done the pause trick though. I'll just hack through it and use continues.

    GREAT SERIES!
  • I have a client (I'm a personal trainer) who is a Mega Man fanatic, and when I train him on Monday evenings, it's pretty much all we talk about. This guy is the biggest Mega Man fan I personally know, and he riddles off facts like nothing else. Even he claims that MM1 is the hardest and most unforgiving...so you're in a damn prestigious spot having beat this one, dude!

He's still got 1-6 on the NES, and we're thinking of doing a marathon soon. My job rules, lol

That is legit, man! That marathon is going to be awesome! I really want to do that some day soon. Once I acquire all the games, that is.

    Good advice there!

I usually start with top man, then get shadow blade and move to needle cannon. I usually then take out spark man (he is easy enough and I usually use needle cannon on him), then magnet man, then hard man. Snake man I can eliminate with the buster so sometimes I tackle him 1st (his weakness is the needle cannon). After snake man I do gemini man (his stage is tough without rush marine or jet but doable, so most people tackle his stage last but I do it whenever I have search snake).

Really 3 has multiple starting options depending on your practice/skill level and how you want to enjoy the game. The trick with beating Snake Man is to let him jump over you at the beginning then stay on that pillar in the center most of the battle, jumping over him as he approaches it. You can usually beat him and get hit once or twice like this.

Agreed, I did learn some tricks from his videos I never thought to try such as using top spin in MM3 against those gorillas in hard man's stage... works like a charm.

I can watch his videos over and over when I'm bored and can't play Mega Man games...

If you do decide to do a more detailed review of the other games I'd be interested in reading them. Oh and I'd love to hear your thoughts on MM5 when you get a chance to break it in. Its got such a great array of weapons, so much fun to play!

I can see what you mean about his videos. They're ridiculously addicting with all the stuff he's able to do. Quite incredible.

And yeah. I'm hoping to do detailed reviews of all the Mega Man games for NES (and maybe SNES). I'd also like to do some comparison stuff looking at Robot Masters, weapons, and music.

This guy's videos are awesome; thank you for sharing this! This makes me want to play some MM SO bad.
  • No offense taken OP. While Mega Man 2 is my favorite one of the series (and favorite game ever),I am actually better at Mega Man 1 than any of the others.
  • How the hell do I beat Quick Man in Mega Man 3. I'm so stuck.
  • He's even tougher than his original appearance in MM2. That is due to his character being larger in MM3. His weaknesses are the Gemini Laser and Hard Knuckle. Of course they are the slowest weapons in the game against the fastest robot master. I usually use the gemini laser and try to avoid his attacks the best I can. It tough even for the most veteran of Mega Man players.

    Hope this helps you

That one's tough for sure, since he's so big and moves so fast. He's weak to Gemini Laser, so use that. If you miss, it's no big deal since it'll bounce around. Because he jumps around, you'll definitely hit him. Just keep firing the Gemini Laser at him, hopefully hitting him the first try, and then dodge as best you can until he falls.

It's also great to hear you've made it this far! Way to go!

  • I've been trying to use the Gemini Laser but having no success.

He's also weak to Search Snake, if that helps any.

  • I'm gonna try Hard Knuckle.

    Good luck!

  • Hard Knuckle's impossible! I've been trying Gemini over and over and getting closer and closer haha
  • Just posted that and minutes later I beat him! Thank God.
