Can someone fill me in on CRT alternatives?

Besides CRTs, what kind of alternatives are there to having one when playing retro consoles, that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? I'm mostly just looking for devices that support stuff like Wii (for virtual console games), or even a Sega Genesis. I have no idea what an upscaler is or how it works, or even what the purpose of a VGA box is, but I hear them mentioned a lot. I'm mostly looking for alternatives that are future ready like using an LCD monitor (standard or widescreen) or stuff that's readily available at retail and not obsolete already.

  • I don't know much about upscalers besides that the best ones are pretty damn expensive. The only time I hear VGA talk is with the Dreamcast and even then, all games aren't supported in that format. A CRT/PVM is definitely optimal but if you don't have space, I guess an upscaler (or Retron 5) would be your alternative.
  • Go with a Sharp EDTV LCD (it's enhanced definition, not high def). I have a 20" with my NES, SNES, and Genesis hooked up. The picture quality is just fantastic, and still has the original 16:9 aspect ratio. It has 3 AV inputs, S-video, and component input.

I used to like Trinintrons until I started using this. Plus it's much lighter as well
  • The only upscaler worth having is the frameister and costs $300. AND you may have to make some modifications to your consoles. Not the Genesis though.

Is that the model you have? Because this thread is currently relevent to my interests. My old CRT that weighs no less than twelve cubic tons and was forged in the heart of a dying star is currently dying itself. The sound keeps going ballistic and there are quite a number of times it'll just move the image just enough to distort it. So if what you say is true, I would be interested in copying your style and acquiring one of these.

Or I'll just fumble around on craigslist for another CRT that wasn't found outside on the street.

    Not even joking.

No. It's not my TV. Just the one that was here when I moved in.
  • I did a ton of research, a bunch of trial and error, and spent way too much money trying to figure this out. What I ended up doing was this:

    1) Went to http://www.displaylag.com/ and found a retail-available TV with very low lag

    2) Bought a Retron5

    3) Bought a cheaper upscaler for S-video systems (Saturn, Dreamcast, etc) - it's on Amazon for like $30 or $40

    4) Bought a cheap component selector box for Wii, Neo Geo AES, Neo Geo CMVS, etc.)

    5) Bought an HDMI selector box for all of my current-gen systems plus Retron5.

I tried the Framemeister with RGB. Honestly, any video junkie will tell you that Framemeister + RGB output is the ONLY way to go. And, if you want the best of the best, it is. Quite honestly, I don't play my retro systems enough to justify the Framemeister, the RGB mods, and the SCART cables. The Retron5 and a modded Wii do just fine for my preferences.

All in all, I spent about $750 on my TV and all the upscalers/selector boxes.
  • Cool Thread - great advice. Replying to make it easier to find in the future.

It's not the exact model, but it will get the job done. Mine is the LC-20AV6U

  • Ive seen some pretty good Upscaling done on newer TV's now lately my friend has a Samsung 50" and I have an LG 55" and both Televisions can display the NES / SNES very well at 16 :9 (not perfect and still a bit fuzzy) but it seems like TV's are getting better at doing this for what its worth
