Famicom Converter Compatibility Issues

I have been building up a nice little stash of Famicom games to play on my Toploader NES with a Famicom converter.  It has been working really well for me but I just got in an Adventures of Lolo FC cart that I can't get to play.  The graphics are really glitchy and the first level doesn't load properly so there's no way for me to play.

I have two Famicom converters.  One is an NTDEC converter that works with maybe two-thirds of my games, and the other is an official converter I got out of an NES Pinball cart that has worked with every game so far except Adventures of Lolo.

Is there a list somewhere of Famicom games that will not load correctly when played on an NES using a Famicom converter?

Also, is there someone that has my exact setup (an NES toploader, Famicom convertor, and an FC Adventures of Lolo cart) that could tell me if that game works properly?  I would like to know if I just have a faulty cart before I go and buy a replacement.

I posted this verbatim over on Famicom World a few days ago but no luck, so maybe someone here can help me.

Thanks!

  • I don't have a converter, but I have a Famicom, so I could test whether the cart itself has a problem. Are you in/near Chicago?

No, I'm near St. Louis.  Thanks for the offer!  I just want to do my due diligence to see if I have a free option to see if this cart is compatible or not.    I'll probably end up buying another cart.

I should mention too that I cleaned the heck out of my cart and it still doesn't work.

  • I have never heard of a game not working from Famicom / NES or vice versa.

hmmm... hopefully another member has encountered a similar problem in the past.

Supposedly, Cybernoid is a game that does not work on a Famicom with an NES-to-Famicom converter.  I found a short list over on Famicom World.  But I haven't found any such list for Famicom-to-NES.

  • hah, thats funny you say that as that is the only cart Ive ever ran into problems running on my Top Loader.
  • I believe that Cybernoid has some bad coding in it that can cause the game not to work on some hardware.

Having said that, I can't imagine that Adventures of Lolo would have anything like that that would cause the game not to run and I just have a bad copy.

As I recall, mine doesn't work for Castlevania 3 and Fester's Quest on a Famicom.

Sounds like I may dig out my famicom and have a fun night of testing to do this weekend
  • Some converters aren't built right. I believe between NTSC Famicom / NES any game should boot, correctly load their graphics / object code, run without timing issues, and all that.

But Famicom extra audio lines won't work. Nor obviously region specific accessories. (mic, 4 player adapter...)
