Shipping a SNES Kiosk

So I did it, I finally got a snes kiosk.

Anyone have any experience with shipping these things?

The guy who is shipping it says he knows alot about shipping because he works in shipping.  He said he is going to use fedex.  I want to make sure he packages it correctly though.

I had someone send me a 120lb NEC XM29 and it was damaged beyond repair (partially because it was packaged poorly I think).

Is it better/worse to use freight?   Is there some special way to make sure this is packaged well?

Any insights from experienced people appreciated.

  • Use freight
  • I work as a kiosk manufacturer, and take them from a flat piece of metal all the way until I crate them and load them on a truck. Use freight. I'd suggest having him bolt it to a skid, shrink wrapping it, and then building a box around it. This is what I do, and I still occasionally get them back damaged from shipping. Still, it's the safest route to go. We've shipped FEDEX/UPS before, and they don't treat large packages nicely.
  • Ok I will tell him that. Hopefully he will agree considering what I paid.

When it is shipped freight, are they just using a forklift to load the skid onto a truck and then its then offloaded at the final destination? I forgot to mention it is only the top part (with the monitor). Still that's the easiest to break part, but at least its not as awkward.
  • They normally don't use tow motors to offload, they usually just have powered lift gates on the truck, and a hand pallet jack to move things around. I'm guessing the total weight boxed would be between 150-200lbs, which could be moved pretty easily with 2 decently strong men.

Good to know. Thanks for your help. Hopefully I can get this safely.

Congrats on the pickup! Where in Indiana are you located?
  • Actually I'm in Illinois now. Champaign/Urbana area. I need to update my profile.
  • Welcome to the neighborhood. I used to work at Fedex and we were totally impartial in our treatment of packages, regardless of their size. They were all treated poorly.

What do you think the freight cost should be on something like this?  I'm getting some pretty insane prices from ups/fedex websites. $400+

  • I would have guessed $2-400, sounds about right. Weight is usually the biggest factor. My prices are different though since I use corporate accounts where we get a discount.

It sucks but it will cost a pretty penny to get this to you in the same shape it left it.
  • So the guy basically refused to ship it, and cancelled my order and refunded my money. (I won it on Ebay). He made all kinds of claims about working for a shipping company and that it would be "no problem shipping it" before I had placed my bid.

The good news is the next day Boosted52405 listed his Kiosk and I just did a local pickup on it today for a better price.

Anyway, how to ship a SNES Kiosk from Ebay?

    Final answer:

    Don't
