Japanese N64

So I have been looking into a few japanese n64 games. I just wanted to check and make sure that I understand correctly.

The n64 is like the snes/sfc in that the internals are the same, the only thing stopping you from playing is the language and the slot on the back of the carts correct? I'm thinking of grabbing the japanese carts I want and getting dirt cheap donor U.S. carts so I can play them on a U.S. system.

please let me know if this is the right way to play Japanese carts!

  • Remove the plastic rail inside the system's cartridge slot, or dremel away the plastic tabs on the rail so that cartridges of any shape can fit. Messing with cartridges would be a huge hassle and still leave many unplayable on your system. Make everything playable on your console instead.
  • Right but there are a few games that I would want to play such as custom robo that i would want to bring to friends houses to play and they wont have a modded system. there is only maybe 3 or so games I would want to play elsewhere
  • I've swapped the back of a Japanese N64 cart with a US sports cart, and it worked as advertised. I'll do the console mod eventually but since I only have one Japanese game, it's not of pressing importance right now.
  • Do your friend a favor and mod their system, too.
  • mod your cart slot on your own and you can do back swaps for the few you want to travel with. there aren't any issues running japan carts on american systems.
  • Or bring your modded system and swap with your friend. Then once theirs is modded, take it back.

Remember, the USA and JPN N64 consoles contain the exact same motherboard. The only thing preventing you from playing JPN games is some plastic.
  • thanks for all the help everyone! I'm sure I will definitely end up modding everyone's system!
  • Controllers work across regions no problem too. FYI.
  • very easy, yes yes and yes
  • i just remove the door assembly from the system and leave a cart in there to prevent dust/etc when it is not in use. that way the console can be restored to original without damage.
  • Why remove the door assembly? The import blocker piece itself unscrews.
  • it also holds the flaps in place iirc
