Mega Man-day 1: Just Beat Mega Man 1 for the NES for the First Time!

  • I loved the write up! As a kid I had very few games, but Mega Man and Mega Man 2 were among them. I actually got to the point where I can beat both without dying.

Something I do that no one has really mentioned, I always take out Fireman first. I use his weapon often through the stages. The annoying sections of Cutman's stage, with the weird things with the eyes that open and move across the screen, one hit kills with Fireman's weapon. The little fire shield that pops up with it helps tremendously with those things that just dive at you and harry your progress as well.

Yellow Devil is a cinch once you memorize the pattern. Though I've never gotten past Fireman without taking damage. I just rapid fire and try to dodge a lot. The rest of the robot masters aren't too tough to get by without taking hits.
  • When I play Mega Man,(or any of them really) I refrain from using the special weapons. Although it takes longer, you can beat every robot master with the mega buster without taking damage.

Thank you! And wow. That is some dedication. I hope to get that good some day, but that won't be for a while.

I can't believe you take out Fireman first. I hear you on his weapon being useful. In my playthrough, since he was the last Robot Master I went after, I didn't really use his weapon, but I can see how it would be useful.

That is an incredible skill! I can't imagine how long it took you to get their patterns down that well.

That's tough in any mega man game that's for sure. I can do all but quick and crash in MM2. I can do all robot masters in MM5 with just the buster but I think since its probably the game I play the most right now.

one day I'd like to be able to do that in every game. I do find myself using mostly the buster for the challenge but for fun I love the special weapons so there's plenty of replay-ability for me in these games.

Im a huge fan of the first 6 and 9. What's your opinion on 7?

Mega buster all the way however on the bosses I will tend to use their weakness. On MM2 and MM3 I can beat the robot masters with the busters as I know the patterns but on 1,4,5,6 I have not played as much and need to use the weakness.

  • If I find a particular weapon that I feel works best for a particular area, I will use it. I will spam Metal Blade in Mega Man 2. I like to get a sense of flow going in my Mega Man sessions; Mega Man 4-6 are still my personal favorites.

Funny I've always taken fireman down either last or near the end of the rotation. So tonight I went to his stage first... I didn't realize how useful that weapon is until today! Thanks for the insight, you've just added more replay value and interesting game play for me today. Shows that no matter how much you play a game you should try new strategies to change it up.

I keep hearing good things about the later Mega Man games, despite the initial bad reviews those seem to have left. All I heard before was that they are boring/repetitive/derivative, but having this thread has shown me there are plenty who really like them. I'm excited to give them a whirl!

And I agree. While the buster makes for a nice challenge, the power that the special weapons give makes the games that much more fun for me.

Hmm... I guess I'll have to try that out the next time I play.

  • I know 4-6 are supposedly not as good as the first three. Are they worth playing at all?

Absolutely ... They are definitely worth playing. 4 and 5 are pretty awesome, neat levels and cool variety of special weapons. I haven't played 6 as much but it is pretty good also.

  • Congrats on your achievement!

Mega Man 1 is my favorite of the lot. I think I've played through this one more than any other game. I remember when my brother's friend brought it over just after it came out. We started with Bombman, and that stage's music is the most nostalgic to me.

We didn't even know about the elecbeam + pause trick for the Yellow Devil until much later, but I never used it, anyway. Once you memorize the block pattern, he's not that bad (although one trip-up does a bunch of damage). Elecbeam is the best for him, since it is the only weapon that can reach the eye when it appears all the way at the top.

The best weapon to use for the clone is fire. Walk away slightly, jump toward him, and use the circling part of the fire to knock him back. Repeat.

My brother was obsessed with beating the robot bosses with the P shooter. I never saw the point in it -- kind of defeats the purpose of the game -- but I agree that it's a good way to challenge yourself.

I know I'm certainly looking forward to playing them.

Hmm... That seems like a good tactic for the clone. I'll have to try that next time.

  • Good write up. I bookmarked this thread so hopefully you'll update it with the new links for the rest of the games. Love Mega Man.

In 28 years, I've never thought to try the Fire Storm either. I always just stayed on the left side of the room and kept knocking him back with the Mega Buster or the Thunder Beam.

Thank you. And yes, I'm trying to keep all the threads linked, so if you just check this one, the others should continue to pop up.

This guy seems to know what I'm talking about

    (31 minutes in)

Thunder Beam (I still like calling it the Elecbeam) is the last thing I would use on him, but to each their own.

Apparently so! I gave it a try last night and the timing on that strategy was a lot tougher to pull off than it looks.

Dang, that was impressive! I haven't had another crack at it yet, but I'll certainly try it the next time I do!

  • You've inspired me to snag the anniversary collection, OP. Now I can finally play through ALL 6 MM titles!   MM6 first, then MM1. Yes, in that order.

Glad to hear it! They are a blast to play! Hmm... I wonder what it would be like to play 6 and then 1. You will definitely be annoyed with the lack of charge shot and slide.

That's why 2 and 3 are so hard to enjoy now
