Anyone collect board games?

Hello Ladies and Gentleman,

I have been really wanting to get into board games again, used to love them growing up. Unfortunately i missed out on a TON of games from the 80's and early 90's so i am thinking i might start collecting board games here and there as well. I missed out on a ton of good games and would love to try the following.

Fireball island

Dragon strike

Omega Virus

Key to th kingdom

Battle Masters

Tornado Rex

Just about video game board game

Heroes quest

Weopons and Warriors

The adventurers

Crash Canyon

What are some of your favorites???

And what are some board games you loved that might have been forgotten. Or some other games like the games on this list .

I remember Forbidden Bridge being one of my favorites, but to this day i don't know a single person who remembers it but me.

It's gonna be tough for some of these as a lot of them had a shitload of pieces and some are pretty pricey.

  • Dude Tornado Rex was my shit as a kid. I think I lost every single game piece before we finally retired our copy. my 8 year old self would set up all 8 guys on the mountain and send them to their doom. I did that more than play the game. My favorite childhood board game is one I still own in nice condition. It's called Fraidy Cats. You should definitely check it out!

dude.....i just watched the commercial for it and holy shit was that a blast from the past. I actually remember that commercial froms seeing it on nickelodeon all the time.

    Thanks for the tip.

ANd yeah that's all i plan on doing pretty much with tornado rex, even at 25 years old

  • Heroquest, all the way.

Warhammer Quest and Spacehulk are both fun, as well.

For family-and-friends board game night we usually stick to German board games like Agricola/Caverna or Catan.

Fireball Island was one of those games that looked so much better in the commercial.

Yeah, the board is HUGE, but the game itself was sort of middle-of-the-road.

To be honest I dont think I have ever seen the commercial. I'm totally gonna watch it later though. The best part of that game was putting it away in the box without hearing the "wurrrrrrr wurrrrr" of the motorized dog slamming around the box. To pack it properly without hitting the dog's button was liking stacking a house of cards.

  • I have a decent collection (that I never have time/opportunity to play). Nothing really retro though (other than new revised versions of DungeonQuest and Acquire)

Favorites are probably the Lord of the Rings Living Card Game, Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition, and Blood Bowl The Card Game
  • As a young bump on the log I enjoyed these games:

    These Milton Bradley wargames

    1. Battle Cry

    2. Broadsides

    3. Dogfight

    4. Hit the Beach

    5. Skirmish

A lot of the early Avalon Hill games

    Coup D'etat

    Clue

    Risk

Screwball - the Mad Mad game (was actually a rip off of Mad Magazine - the first printing had a character that looked suspiciously like Alfred E. Newman - after Mad Magazine complained the cover had a microphone stuck in front of his face).

Billionaire (by Happy Hour) - a vacuformed 3d marble race game

Loved Dark tower when it came out - bought a copy the first day it came out (still have it I am pleased to say).

I have two games from England that a friend helped me get - lots of neat toys in them:

    Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs

    https://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic1590216_md.jpg

Escape From Atlantis - first version that later was released in the U.S. under various incarnations.

  • I have Hero's Quest, Battlemaster, Omega Virus and Forbidden bridge. Hero's quest and Forbidden bridge still get played regularly by me and my friends.
  • Forbidden bridge, Axis and Allies, Scrabble, 13 dead end drive, Battleship, Weapons and warriors, so many to name!!
  • I have a few board games but they're more the more modern strategy type with some quick and more luck based stuff thrown in.

a list of my collection is here https://boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/rokubungi?own=1&subtype=boardgame&ff=1
  • There's a few board game threads here. I believe pma, and quest4nes have good sized collections. At one point I was buying up different versions of monopoly, but that was years ago.
  • I don't really collect any but here are some I grew up with: Talisman, Atmosfear, Monopoly, Candyland, Checkers, Battleship, Connect 4, Sorry, Yahtzee

I know they're not board games but still the same idea of sitting at a table with other people to play...card games: Spades, Texas Hold 'Em, UNO.
  • I never really was into board games to be honest but I did have that sweet electronic Star Wars Battleship.

This is one that I can't believe they dont' rerelease in some form.

I'd love to get a working copy some day.

You might like this game from my wayward youth:

You would aim the periscope and it fired a little steel ball - the ships had little pegs on the bottom and they would pop up when you hit them.  (A later version had cardboard ships - nowhere as neat as the original.)

  • I've recently been playing a lot more board/card games

    Elder Sign

which is a fantastic Fantasy Flight Games co-operative horror dice game where players try to all

collect enough elder signs to seal away the Ancient One that is awakening

    image

    Lord of the Rings: LCG

I like this game a lot -- the best part is you can play it solo!

    image

    Sentinels of the Multiverse

this is another co-op cardgame that i'd like to play more of... i've tried solo games, but it's tough and not really designed for that... looks pretty fun though

    image

also just learned some new stuff at DragonCon

    Shadowrun Crossfire

we only got a demo played, however i really liked the deckbuilding aspect, and i already love the Shadowrun Universe a lot so this is a very possible Future Purchase for me

    image

    Star Realms

another very inexpensive versus game for deck-building and space ship battles... it was fast and fun.. however im guessing i wont play it as often

  • Thanks for the replies gentleman. appreciate it.

I spent all night looking up board games on ebay and man are they expensive. I didn't realize some of these fetch almost 200 bucks.

A little bit disappointing, but i will find a way to acquire some of these.

Fireball island is probably the only one i won't purchase, i just can't justify spending 200 on it.

Most of them fortunately hover around 50-75 for complete games.

Honestly, for fun factor... Fireball Island was worth about the $20 I paid on clearance when I bought it as a kid

At least with Heroquest, all of the quest books for the expansions have been uploaded and exist online, so you can save that money if you just want to play the game rather than collect the minis/components.

I have one of these stashed away in my collection:

I have never seen it on ebay and I know it is probably the rarest of the James Bond games.  Mine is not mint but it is very close.  Picked it up at a thrift store at least 30 years ago and by some miracle they put it in a large plastic bag instead of taping the hell out of it (one thing I really hate about thrift stores is the obsession they have with taping things - some of the older games it is impossilbe to remove the tape without doing a lot of damage).

  • I dont really collect them but i do have 10-12 board games and i like to play once in a while.

As a kid, it was risk, axis allies and heroquest that were my favorites...
  • I don't necessarily collect them, but I've got a lot and love to play them

    The Greats

Catan - one of the best, though more mainstream than it used to be

Catan expansions / variations: Cities and Knights, Traders and Barbarians, and Struggle for Catan - all somewhat different and lots of fun

Stone Age - great game not all too dissimilar from Catan

Dominion - Awesome deck building strategy game

Sequence - Classic, simple, but great

    Risk

    Telestrations - great party game

Scrabble - I loved this game since college.

Mille Bornes - also old-school, but great strategy / luck card game

Monopoly Deal - great card game that is quick and easy to learn

24 - you have to love math, but if you do, it's an awesome game (and can play by yourself)

    The Pretty Goods

Agricola - Some sort of Catan / Stone Age cross-breed. Only have played it once, but I see potential

For Sale - Great bidding war type of game. Fun semi-strat game to play with friends

Ticket to Ride - Lots of people love this game. I'm not a huge fan, but I appreciate the concept

Bang! - Interesting western game. Goes to fast with too little thinking for my liking though

Pandemic - Good co-op game, but I didn't find it too much fun
  • Omega Virus? Heck yeah!

As a kid/adult I loved Life, Scrabble, Scattegories, 13 Dead End Drive, Clue, Smart Ass and Trivial Pursuit.

    Cranium is good too!
  • I am not really into board games, but I have been wanting to play one called Pandemic. It is apparently a co-op board game and its supposedly really fun to play.
  • I used to be big into collecting all the different versions of Monopoly, which is by far my favorite board game, but the urge to collect them has significantly subsided since I last bought my last one, the World of Warcraft edition in 2012. I had about 30 or so different ones but I sold a bunch of them and kept my favorites. All but 2 were sealed.
  • Last Night on Earth - good co-op adult zombie game.
  • I don't collect them but I have quite a few that I have kept ever since I was a small child.

Some of my favorites as a kid were:

    Monopoly

    Sorry

    Uncle Wiggly (fucking awesome)

Chess (I don't know if this fits, but hey it's a game played on a board... been playing since I was 7 or 8.)

... and my favorite of all: Stratego (I learned this game when I was 6 or so, and remember challenging anyone in my family and my friends)
  • I'm not really into board games, but I have a few games I've picked up over the last couple of years:

    Red Dragon Inn

    Zombies!!!

Frag (bought it at a yard sale for $1, still haven't tried it yet)

    Eldritch Horror

    Boss Monster

I've noticed over the last year or so board games have really exploded in popularity. I read over on Polygon board games usurped RPGs to dominate the event space at this year's Gen Con, they seem to be the new it-thing to play. I wonder if the growing market for board games will divert money away from retro-gaming?
  • Those were before my time but I recognize almost all of the ones on your list from watching James Rolfe's "Board James" series

I picked up a few old MB board games from the 70s and 80s at a thrift store for a few bucks a piece. I figured I may start collecting them, but they take up too much space and I don't have as much nostalgia for them. I do like modern board games though, had lots of fun playing Catan and Munchkin.. and would like to get a Nintendo themed chess set some day
  • Weapons and Warriors
  • A great dexterity game (in the Jenga category) is Toc Toc Woodman

    image

You use the axe to knock off the pieces of bark without toppling a core.

another very popular game in my family is Phoenix

    image

you try to be the first to get your colored pawns to match the randomly generated pattern in the center, and can rearrange your pawns in specific ways based on the cards you play.

we also play a lot of the great dalmuti

    image

a great one to bring out at parties
