So after a two day break, I managed to do a no-death run all the way to Volkmire's! I'm still stuck on the last section, but I felt that was an accomplishment worthy of noting.
This game is one hell of a quest. I can't believe I've made it as far as I did in such little time. 10 year old me never dreamed of seeing level five

I had a really good run. Only died a couple times in the earlier levels. Made it past the missiles (which had been given me a lot of trouble previously) and got my butt kicked by the final stretch of laser gates... Went through all my continues, but on my final continue, I had managed to memorize the pattern of the gates well enough to finally clear it!
I have now officially beaten every level in the game, (just not all in single run yet). I made it all the way to the boss battle with Robo-Manus at the end of level 8 and got taken out.
Played it again, and beat volkmire's again.. I'm definitely improving, now I just need to do it without burning through all my continues and lives so I actually have a shot at getting to the end.
I've beaten most of this before but I feel as though there's a sharp rise in difficulty around these levels. This is generally where I die and have accepted the fact I'll probably never beat the game. But this guy explains it so simply and makes it look easy. If you watch these videos and play the game over and over, I'm sure that would help.

I got SO damn close to beating Volkmire's last night; what a nerve-racking section that is! I saw the finish line! This is the only part of the game so far where I'm actually happy to stop playing once I get a game over, lmao. I don't think I can handle doing that over and over. I can tell I'm going to nail it within the next few tries. I have to; I can't put up with the anxiety of that last part over and over.

Oh for gods sake..........I made it to literally the last gate in Volkmires 7 times in a row and died over the finish line............my last life I made it and died instantly on the elevator....

I can't really add much in the way of tips other than just learning the pattern. I only watch my toad in my peripheral vision and keep my focus 99% on the gates.
This really does seem to be "the secret". It's so tempting to just watch the toad, but you really do have to do a split-periph type deal. I notice when I do this, I tend to make it further in one go.
The real aggravation comes in when having to start from the beginning of the section while your nerves are pounding, lol.
This is by far the hardest part of the game so far for me, without question. I do much better with stupid level design stuff than I ever do with scrolling speed sections.
Luckily the Volkmire gates aren't random, so you can memorize them. I have noticed that a lot of the time when you're moving up, you have to keep moving up towards the top of the screen, then you are expected to move back down towards the bottom of the screen again (only two direction changes). Then after that pattern, move forward to get ahead of the fast gates in the middle of the screen.
In other words, I memorized it using patterns. "This part is a 'V' shape," etc.

Hit it with bar!! That whole level becomes 75% easier if you can hang on to the bar..it can take out the robots, the fans, and the poison gas puffers
