SNES pic issue

I tried a preliminary search, which didn't exactly give me what I wanted. I have a second SNES I'm trying to set up, and for whatever reason, when I put the cart in and fire it up, I can barely see any semblance of the start screen and everything is black and white and non-functional. The carts are fine (tested them on my other system), and as far as I can tell, the system looks fine.

I've read that the connectors or whatever might be too loose from years of use or prolonged cart inseration, so I tried to wiggle the cart back and forth to get a better connection. I also applied enough alcohol to the cart pins and inserted into the system a bunch of times. I've also ruled out the cord(s) as a source of the problem, just FYI.

Am I totally screwed? I haven't opened up the console or anything (I don't have the correct tools/bits/etc.).

  • Try different AV's? I know its a dumb answer but I can't tell you how many times wiggling AV cables has brought the picture back when I thought it was internal.

I appreciate all answers because I'm at a loss. I have actually tried different AVs; neither helped the problem, and both work on the other system.

  • Is the second console a PAL SNES?
  • Have you tried the RF output?

you need to open it up.  theres a small pot inside  but a bit of contact cleaner in the pot and twist it around with a screw driver then set it back in its original position and that should fix it.  also clean the multi out with a q tip and alcohol

Do you have a pic handy of what you're talking about? I just want to make sure I don't mess anything up. I'll try to figure out a way to open the thing; I really ought to just order a set of tools for my NES/SNES/etc. No worries if you don't have a pic; I appreciate the input.

It's definitely a NTSC version, MrPete, but thanks for the idea.

teh lurv: I'll try the RF just to see. I guess the actually AV outlet could be messed up, even if the cords are fine.

    yeah here you go

you will need a 4.5mm security bit screw driver to open it.
  • That's the trimmer cap,if you adjust it you should use a plastic screw driver when the system is on to see if color restores.

Reviving this thread, ha. Just now getting to this issue after forever.

My SNES looks a bit different on the inside, but I assume the red-rimmed screw in the hole on mine is the same thing?

So I opened it up some more, so I could see the board, and I saw a thin line of brownish gunk surrounding the CPU, which I attempted to clean off. Just put the thing back together to test it, and while it's still messed up, it seems to be making progress; I can hear the game sound and see colors flashing on the screen, as opposed to static and blackness.

Anyone experience something like this? The gunk was very uniform around the CPU, and otherwise, the system is super clean and nice-looking.

  • that sounds like flux or soda. did you try turning that red pot screw? and putting a bit of contact cleaner in the pot?
