Controllers Information

I am in the process of cleaning and repairing every controller I own. For all the different sytems I own. I looked on here and could not find anything soild for controllers, like the pages that deal with cleaning carts. So I want everyone's information, their links, their pictures all of it. Then I am going to put it all together and maybe they add it on here. Feel free to respond on here or pm me. Thank you everyone.

nes snes and sega controllers are easy  jusy open them up and clean  the black pads on the rubber   and the contact points controller board  with alcohol and a q tip.  then clean the buttons  and the button holes.  put it all back together  and its done.  as for n64 ps1/ps2 dream cast  you will need some lithium lubercant  to make the anlouge stick move better.  ps1 through ps4 game cube  and all xbox  just  put in directly in the mechanisum.  n64 and dream cast will have to be cleaned before relubing.

and to clean what i call hand crap or soda out of the cracks of the controller just take a tooth brush  with glass cleaner  and scrub it  then wipe it off.

  • I do them like I do systems, disassemble everything and clean them piece by piece with degreaser in the sink. I use a toothbrush for all the grime that gets in the seams and around the button holes (ick!). I usually lightly wipe over the outer surfaces and cords with a magic eraser to help lift of excess dirt and soil. Rinse heavily, shake/blow off excess water and let dry for a day or two before reassembly.

Make sure you buy non-petroleum based lithium grease, otherwise it may damage the plastic over time.
  • Anyone know what size of screwdriver to open an NES standard controller? I'd like to clean mine, too.
  • Be careful with NES and SNES controllers. There are rubber pads inside them that are very fragile. (The look like this http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31P8MRUue2L.jpg) An area of those pads is very thin and can be torn if not careful. If you tear it then its game over for that controller. At that point you would have to buy replacement rubber pads.

ive been cleaning the pads for 10 years and never torn a pad off.  but  the nes ones can be fragile  due to age  and can fall apart if not careful.    if  one is broken  i think third party companies  make replacements

use a small/medium philips tork screw driver or regular.  torks work best imo.  you can get tork set at home depot for a cheap price

Good call.  although ive been using lithium grease for years and never had a problem.  still.. i didnt know it has perolium in it (i checked the back) and switched to a plastic safe silicone lube immediately.

Napa dielectric silicone compound. works great imo.  i think super lube has some good greases that are plastic safe too.

do you use dawn soap?  seem to work best on grime imo.  i dont usally wash a controller unless is been used to clean out a toilet lol

    I use this:

Dawn is a very mild soap in comparison.  Put this in a mister bottle and it will rinse nearly all dirt free with water and the plastic will have that brand new look again.  Dish soap wont do it, just not the same.
