  • DFW update

I have to recommend Retro Madness in Hurst TX. They have a great selection of not only video games, but game merchandise, comics, action figures, movies, and strategy books. Lately they have been getting in some very rare titles from the NES-Playstation 1 era. The prices and store credit are great. They also have a mini-arcade in the back room with some old classics, and hold Pokémon card/3DS meetups every week. The owners are extremely laid back, friendly, and professional as is the general atmosphere. A lot of local gamers come in, so often times we all get into gaming discussions. Really feels like a retro gaming community hub. A true gem of a store that anyone in the DFW area needs to check out.

  • Took a drive to Game Exchange in the Florida store listings. It is no more.
  • There's a store in Rockland MA "Nostalgia Games" a bit overpriced and cramped, but another one for the list.
  • According to Google, CD World in Idaho Falls, Idaho is permanently closed. I was going to drive out there, but I don't want to make a nearly eight hour round trip to see for my self that it is no longer open.
  • Video Games Then and Now closed their Des Plaines location. They only have the Norridge location, now.

I stopped in there briefly last weekend to check the place out. The storefront is pretty small, but I can't comment on how cramped the place was as the staff was in the middle of rearranging the store when I visited. Prices on games ranged from VGPC average to $10-20 more for popular titles. What annoyed me a little bit was console system boxes stacked up on the storefront windows. The store faces east so every box was severly faded by the morning sun. This seems to be a common practice with game shops, I don't know why. Please game store owners, invest in UV blocking window film. Think of the boxes.

Update for High Energy Vintage in MA: The store lost it's lease and is leaving the Somerville location at the end of August. From what I understand the owner hasn't secured a new location for his store yet, so he'll be operating out of the Somerville flea market until then.
  • Ive got a couple places in and around Miami, FL that aren't listed on here yet.

There's a store called Multivest Video Games in North Miami Beach, the store's pretty small and tough to spot but its in the middle of a little shopping center. When I was there it seemed to be fairly new and prices were a little high on most stuff.

The other spot is called The Grid Gamers, which is in Miami, but I haven't had a chance to go check it out yet
  • My grandparents live in Idaho Falls and told me that CD World went out of business. Thanks for this AMAZING list!!
  • We opened a new game store in Lakeland Florida! It's called Outlaw's 8-bit and Beyond
  • Add Video Game World in Huntersville, NC

They've been open for 2 years.

They have a Facebook too pretty sure it's just facebook.com/videogameworldnc

They have a huge selection and prices are always 5-10% under online.

The owner will work with you on pricing too.
  • one not listed:

Washington (state) - Seattle - Spin Cycle

Neat little store on Broadway; main business seemed to be in vinyl, but had retro games and systems. Picked up a few NES titles. Prices were almost dead-on with Pricecharting. Not complaining, I never mind throwing business to a brick+mortar.

Here's the website for Sudden Impact in Massachusetts, which is my personal favorite store due to the super nice owner, the great atmosphere, and the fact that it's basically a corridor that's crammed with gaming stuff. Also, on occasion, they stock Star Fox 2 repros and copies of common N64 games modded to run on North American systems. It's totally worth the four hour drive from my house, though bizarrely, I've counted at least three funeral homes within walking distance of the place. Not even going to try to explain that one. What I can explain is that the owner checks his prices online, and will adjust prices around eBay prices if something turns out to be way off, but typically prices sub-eBay by varying amounts. He will also get to know you and regularly adds discounts on large purchases, especially if you seem to know what you're doing.

I get why the store is called Spin Cycle, but I can't help thinking this would be better suited for a Laundromat or a Spinning/Bicycle shop.
  • Thought this would be the appropriate place to post this, the Kentucky Florence Mall Game Swap (already on the list) is highly NOT recommended. I have seen them prey on kids by buying their games for about 1/10 of what they sell them for eBay or above prices. They will not haggle on any price of anything. To top it off i went in there to see what they would give me for a few games, and when he offered me 1/5 of what they are worth, i said "Im sorry man i just cant do that". His response was rolling his eyes at me, then he told me how much each of my games were worth, and lied about ALL of them except 1. I told him again im sorry i just cant do it for that much, and he started raising his voice at me "Well then what would it take, 50? 100) in a real asshole tone. I told him id do it for 50 (even though i wasnt really going to i just wanted to see how greedy this guy was) and he said no 40 is the best he could ever do because "he has to make a profit". So again i told him sorry i cant do that, he just gave me one of those snarky laughs and said goodluck finding a better deal. Needless to say, never going there and i wouldn't recommend anyone go there unless they want to pay ebay or above prices. The guy was a real asshole about it all, all he had to do was say 40 is all we could do and i woulda said no thanks and went on my way, but he just had to try to feel smarter like i didnt know what my games were worth. 1/10

Sad thing is this used to be a really good store until they moved to a different location in the same mall, now there is not a single deal to be found there, and they never have new stock =(
  • I've been meaning to put this one on the list since it's been around for almost a year now. Very limited hours, and I've yet to step in the place (I live 5 minutes away), but the village of North Syracuse has a game store called Gizmo's Videogames & Wrestling. As you would guess, they specialize in wrestling merchandise as well. Here's a link to their website:

  • Another to add to the list!

    Game On https://www.facebook.com/GameOnNC

The store is located in Winston-Salem. Their info is on the FB page.

The store is somewhat small but they do have a good amount of games. The employee/owner? I forgot his name, but he was very polite and helpful. This is definitely a store you will want to stop into and will be happy purchasing from such a friendly store! I picked up a few games in very good condition. I will definitely be returning for more pick ups!
  • Sad to report two closures. Power Up Games in Albany, GA has closed shop. Not sure what happened but for the last year or two it kept changing hands in weird ways and has finally shut down all together. The second is more personal as I used to work there for a little while and a really good buddy of mine owned it. Plug 'n' Play in Dublin, GA closed after 10 years in business and fighting two Gamestops in town for the last 5 or 6 years. Please adjust the list accordingly.

Sorry to hear these shops closed. Its a shame to see these shops go... I hope someone opens up in that area soon.
  • 8-bit Gamers in Santa Clara, CA is no longer selling retro games.

I'm kind of pissed off, as I stopped in 3 times earlier this week and the store was closed during otherwise 'business' hours. Thought to call the store just now, to see if they'd actually be open, and he said they liquidated. Only board and card games now... I couldn't understand what he said, but it seems like the name of the store is changing too.

Thought to visit Yelp, and evidently he got rid of the retro games in mid-August. I was in there in early August, and he didn't make any mention of it then...

Were you selling them stuff they actually needed? You don't indicate what type of games they were. Every game store gets tired of having stuff they don't need shoved in their face.

You are entirely missing his point. I highlighted what stands out to me. This is what turns me away from stores, and I am sure more people would agree about this type of attitude. I was given a very rude attitude at a store listed on this same list, and I will not return to it. Off day in both cases (DragGames and mine)? Perhaps... but I will never return to a store that treats a customer in this manner.

  • You should add me to this list, Hilltop Marketplace Butte MT, it's technically not a game store, but I sell my video games in there.
  • My girlfriend lives in Tempe, Arizona, and I wanted her to get me some SNES games that I'm looking for. Does anybody know if Flashback Games and The Gaming Zone have good prices?
  • Wanted To Add "Media Exchange" to the List

and "Media Madhouse" both are located in Elkhart, IN
  • Matt's Game Exchange recently opened a store in Greensboro, and I must say, it is such a relief to finally have a 'good' game store in the area. The other big game store, Lost Ark, has been selling at a huge markup for years.

My experience with Matt's has been fantastic so far. The staff is very friendly, they tend to price things at actual retail, and they're willing to haggle on inventory that isn't moving quickly (most rare games). Plus since they have other locations in South Carolina, there is a fresh rotation of stock each month. I highly recommend checking them out if you are in the area.

I'll admit that I used to work at that store back in the 2000s in the old spot across from the new one. The owner has expressed his frustration to me about finding good people to work at that location the past few years. For whatever reason they just can't find people despite being able to get (and keep) good people at their other locations. I know guys who have been with the company 8-15+ years that work at the other stores and they don't do stuff like that.

You were so defensive that it was obvious something bothered you. Either way, this type of attitude is not good for business and should be addressed as soon as possible.
