Hardest NES game you can beat?

I recently recorded one of my most challenging games to beat on the NES.  What is yours?

  • ^That's mega-impressive, sir. GnG on the NES is on my list of games I absolutely have to complete.

Even though I haven't fully completed it yet, Battletoads is far and away the most difficult game I've gotten insanely good at. It's my #1 NES gaming goal to complete that game.

I have yet to really attempt battletoads.  Too many bad memories.  But now that I have laid this one to rest that is a great one to start working on next for sure.

  • Ive completed.bucky o' hare and zelda 2. those would.be the most challenging ive completed of what I own on NES, which isnt too much. Im waiting on a gng in the mail, and I look forward to trying out the legendary hard game. I can only get to the fire level on Sgng. Lol

    Nice win man!

Bucky o Hare is no easy feat.  I still have yet to beat that one myself.  SGNG is the hardest in the series IMO.  Good luck on your adventure once you get GNG it is quite a feeling to complete to say the least.

I haven't played Bucky o Hare myself, but I personally found SGnG to be much easier than the NES version. I can make it to like level 3 or 4 on the NES, whereas I can complete the SNES version.

I have noticed that about people with this series.  If one lacks on the NES version they usually have no problem on the SNES version.  I chalk up being better at the NES version because I had it at a very young age and played it a lot.  I did not get the SNES version till much later because I went the Genesis route back in the day so maybe that is why that one is a struggle for me?

  • I managed a minimalist Zelda 1 run (swordless, 3 hearts, but I got the bomb upgrades) and got to Ganon. Haven't tried beating him with the wooden sword yet.. I learned a lot about the game doing that run though.

I have yet to do a minimalist Zelda 2 run but I have beaten it a few times (once without the corner trick on Shadow Link) including once on the Gamecube Collector's Edition disc, which was strangely difficult because of the analog stick. Other than that I've beaten Metroid, Mega Man, Jackal, Castlevania, and Ninja Gaiden. Challenging games, but not too difficult to complete.
  • The Mutant Virus. By far.
  • I'm pretty terrible at NES games, but a buddy of mine is amazing.

He has a video of Contra and Ninja Gaiden no death runs:

  • I think the most difficult thing I have actually achieved is Castlevania I - no deaths....I think I beat it in just under 23 minutes to...I believe the world record is 18 something.

Castlevania III has been beat as well, Ninja Gaiden, Contra etc. there is a few more but I can't think right now........same with NostalgicMachine we are getting pretty close to beating Battletoads as well.

Many of RPGs as well but I never really considered them "difficult" per say just time consuming and sometimes cryptic.
  • Dude! Very nice. Watching that was like getting gut punched in a way, as you made it look easy. I cannot tell you how many times I've wanted to chuck this cart out the window. Congrats on beating it with style.

I guess my most impressive NES game beaten would be Silver Surfer. I have even done it once no deaths. My next step is recording it and beating the world record.

I've been attempting Castlevania 1 in the same fashion for the past month or so....it's much harder than I thought

Thanks but I would have to say Silver Surfer is more braggable than this title.  Well done.

Makes sense. I tried to play the GC Megaman Collection once. It sucked! I think my issue was more with the A and B button size/placement, but I'm sure the stick hampered things too. And the D-pad on that thing just isn't conducive to action.

  • Blaster Master & Mr. Gimmick
  • The original Mega Man

Most people automatically assume the game is hard because of the AVGN video. It's really not. I consider Ghosts n Goblins to be a harder game to sit down and beat. Silver surfer has patterns you can memorize. You kind of need to get good with the controls but eventually you can surf (haha) right through it with little difficulty. The final stages are the hardest. Congrats again on this win dude! I will eventually try to beat this one.

  • I've beaten Dr. Jeckyl and mr Hyde, 1943, predator, sword master, adventure island 2, ninja gaiden 1-3, no death castlevania 1, castlevania 3, rally bike, batman megaman 1-6. Those are some notably difficult games I've beaten.
  • Bucky O'Hare! One of my favorites!
  • Dragon's Lair probably.

The WR for Castlevania is under 12 minutes currently. Whew. Kudos on beating it, though; still seems like a great time to me. I haven't beaten it yet. Need to pick it back up and try to get past my most recent wall, Death.

  • Ghosts 'n Goblins and the first Ikari Warriors, I think.

I can no death only Ghosts 'n Goblins for now, but I will keep trying to no death Ikari Warriors as soon as I go into vacations.

Damn! It has honestly been quite awhile since I last checked... I may have to go practice again...however I am wondering if I did beat it around 18 mintes and I am just off, The time difference would be relatively the same.

I think I had it written down I will have to check when I get home.

The key to no deaths is just getting your triple holy waters and throwing them in the right places.....If I died I just hit the reset button haha.

It is a short enough game where you can just put up with it.

  • Probably Contra?

I dunno. I had trouble with Darkwing Duck, Mega Man, and Castlevania starting out. Then by the time I was good enough to beat them, they didn't seem all that hard anymore. (Anyone else experience this?)

I'd say Contra requires the most focus from start to finish as compared to the others I named. There are levels in the other games where I can zone out and mail it in without it costing me too badly. Contra demands attention.

I've never really had interest in tackling the toughest games. Battletoads and Ghosts N Goblins. I might try beating Ninja Gaiden at some point though. I've made it pretty far before.
  • I've single credit cleared Ninja Gaiden.
  • Not a 1cc, not beaten.  Also your score is bounching around all over the place, pretty sure theres a bunch of editing and cut out parts in this "longplay".

  • Ninja Gaiden

    Castlevania
  • Castlevania and Dracula's Curse are definitely two more that I can beat, and do so regularly. I wouldn't consider Simon's Quest a game to boast about beating
