NES black labels

Hi all...

Am thinking of collecting black box NES titles that had the art as pixels. Any idea how many thare are?

  • plus 3 grey games = metroid, kid icarus, and rad racer.

And some people count MTPO and Ice hockey because they are part of the 'sports series' but they lack the cool pixel art.
  • As Faxanadude said........... 30, 33 or 35 up to you........... I count 3 grey games but not MTPO or Ice Hockey

And if you're collecting CIB, good luck with Donkey Kong Jr. Math and Stack-Up with all the pieces.

  • It's a great subset to collect for. Looks amazing on a shelf. The art is timeless. And they are all pretty common EXCEPT for Stack Up and DK. Jr. Math. Have fun with the hunt.
  • I am after all of these myself, but the Canadian variants
  • personally, i call it 36. 30 black boxes, 3 silvers, MTPO and the 2 zelda games. Why do i say 36, do you ask?

Because in eaqrly advertisements, that was what was shown as the "starting lineup" for the system. take a look at the ROB poster. take a peek in the back of the Black Book. they showed black boxes, silvers, tyson, and both zelda games. so thats what I call the "Black Box Plus" set.
  • Zelda 2 doesn't make sense, wasn't that a 87 or 88 release? Nowhere near the launch window for the NES.
  • I've always been curious if Tyson counts. It is in the black box style and it is also branded with the "sports series" logo.
  • If Tyson counts, Ice Hockey should as well. It also has the sports series logo.

I would kind of like to see a pixel art true black box label for MTPO.
  • How many have black boxes?

There are 30 titles in the black box/pixel art style. See the photo above for that list. These games were the launch titles.

There are an additional 3 games in the pixel/art style that game out a hair later. They look visually similar to the black box games except they are silver. They are Metroid, Rad Racer, and Kid Icarus.

Each of the above games are part of a 'series' - Action, Arcade, Light Gun, Sports etc.

There are two other games that are in these series but lack the art style. - MTPO and Ice Hockey.

Zelda 1 is sometimes also thrown in with this group because it appears on a lot of early NES posters and launch title checklists released by Nintendo. But it lacks both the pixel style AND a 'series' designation.

Using this info, Define a complete launch set on your own and have fun collecting.
  • Yeah, thanks.

All 30 BB games weren't available at launch. I believe Slalom wasn't released until sometime in '87 and was the last one

Day one launch titles were Super Mario Bros, 10-Yard Fight, Clu Clu Land, DK Jr. Math, Duck Hunt, Excitebike, Gyromite, Hogan's Alley, Stack-Up, Golf, Ice Climber, Kung Fu, Mach Rider, Baseball, Pinball, Soccer, Wrecking Crew, and Wild Gunman.

  • That post above was my first in NA, I landed here few times before, but not being NES/Nintendo focused I never had a good look around until yesterday: am so impressed with the community knowledge, welcoming tone and surprising number of replies (despite several existing topics on black label games )

Thank you all for the very valuable info (and a special thanks to Faxanadude for the summary, am being spoiled with this spoon feeding )

I will be going for the 33 set as I like the story behind the pixel art decision Nintendo took to manage expectations, but I have a feeling it wont be long before I get the other 3 too
  • Good luck. Loose should be doable with a few hundred dollars. Even the priciest ones aren't that pricey.

CIB is a different story, though. DK Jr. Math is a bit of an investment because the box is so hard to find.

Metroid also had a yellow box/label variant that isn't pixel art.

Wow, he even has Ice Hockey, too.

  • Good luck man. Im currently hunting them all CIB. I'm at 11 or 12/30. I actually cannot believe I dont know the exact number.
  • Thanks everyone

I will go for the loose path, these seem easier than my other target (all commercial long box PS1 games with all variants, been hunting those for months, still missing 3 or 4 though)
  • mmm looking at this photo:

    http://www.videogameobsession.com/videogame/nesboxes/nes_black_boxes-01.jpg

Those are 30 games, yet there's one I found that's not there

    http://www.videogameobsession.com/videogame/nesboxes/NES-SMBDH-DuoBox-vgo.jpg

will that make the total of black labels ones with pixel arts 31? or is there any reason this 2 in 1 wont count?
  • Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt combo cart was only available in the Action Set console package. It didn't have a retail box of its own.

    image

It's up to you whether you want to count it or not. Usually it isn't counted as a black box game as it 1) didn't have a box and 2) is just a combo of the separate SMB and Duck Hunt games.

If you want a box for it, the member UncleTusk makes them. But they're not original Nintendo manufatured boxes.
  • Thanks for the clarification... I think I will add it, am after loose ones anyway (and this is exactly how my long box ps1 obsession started... I slipped deeper one game after the other )
  • 34 games should be the limit of original releases. The 30 black box ones up there, SMB/DH, and these three (bottom row):

    image

Anything else would be a custom label, not an original one. Like this Zelda II black box:

    http://s785.photobucket.com/user/Yahriel_Heffez/media/NES Label - 05-06 2010/LegendofZelda2TheLinksAdventureLabe.jpg.html

is a custom label, not an original.

Yeah the "Arcade Classics" games were all from 1986 I believe. I actually never put much thought to Dr Jr Math being released before Dk Jr NES though. That's pretty weird.

  • I think I screwed up my list, though. Tennis is listed as a launch title and soccer came later in the NA database, but I've seen sources that listed both. Oh, well, I think I'm mostly right.

Yeah, after the intial launch, the arcade titles came in mid 86, followed by a few others (Balloon Fight, Gumshoe, and I think Urban Champ.) Around that time third party publishers started releasing games. The rest were in 1987.
