Star Wars Battlefront

So I tried out the Star Wars Battlefront open beta on PS4.  Some good Star Wars blaster action.  Not like Battlefield or old Battlefront, feels like its own thing.  The power up system is a bit more arcadey.  Overall it has a good flow and nails the Star Wars experience.  I know it is only a beta but it needs more maps+maps!

Anyone else playing?

Do you just get it from the PS store or something? I will try it out when I get home tonight.

    Ok sweet thanks man.

  • I didn't even notice it up yet

Gonna download it tonight and play

    Psn username same as here
  • It's amazing. I was really worried when I heard it was a Dice game, but for the first time ever they didn't disappoint! I'm just happy someone made something other than a COD clone.
  • I was also pleasantly surprised. As a huge Star Wars fan this game is loads of fun, even in beta form with only two maps/modes
  • I wonder what the LucasArts + Free Radical Design prototype is like, here's hoping it surfaces one day.
  • I hope the real game is a lot better than the beta. The battlefield engine fell off ever since they thought it would be a good idea to have LESS in game objects blow up. What's the point of the battlefield engine if I can't blow out walls?
  • I think with a different game mode you'll see more stuff to be destroyed.

    So far so good

After I got the beta , played like 4 hrs >.< haha
  • Finally won as Rebels on Hoth. That is a tough map to win, Rebels got rolled pretty much every other time I played, not even close. Rebels have to do a bunch of objects (and half the players want just go shoot dudes) meanwhile Empire can just keep killing and walking.
  • I've been loving the beta so far, even with just the two levels for multiplayer it is still addicting. Haven't gotten to play as Vader or Luke yet, anyone care to share their experience playing as them?
  • I played as vader for one round it was epic

I did the force choke and tossed the saber at someone - I was bashing guys in 'the hanger' portion of the map
  • Blasters that don't reload, nades on cooldown.

    Nope.

Give me old Star Wars Battlefront any time. I'll meet you on Rhen Var Citadel.
  • Gotta use the last gun to do the reloads

punkr knows what is up.  The 4th gun, the heavy barrel one I don't know the name, you need to do the reloads

Anyway I really enjoyed the beta.  I wasn't super excited for the new Battlefront, but this was a great deal of fun.  I think it is going to be blast to just jump in and blast some dudes star wars style.

  • I broke my 29 year streak of never owning a non-Nintendo console and picked up the PS4/Battlefront bundle. It's quite impressive so far.
  • For anyone curious about the single player aspect of the game so far...

For single player, you are given 3 choices: Training, Battles, and Survival.

All of them give you 3 options: Solo play, Online Co-Op (invite from your friend list only) , or Split-Screen local co-op.

Training allows you to practice 5 different scenarios: fly the X-Wing, ride a speeder bike, play as Darth Vader or Palpatine in a villian scenario, command the AT-ST, and fly a T-47 airspeeder. You can obtain up to 3 stars for completing certain specific objectives within each training scenario.

Battles consist of 8 scenarios to pick from, each with specifc objectives which gives you more stars: Battle on Hoth, Hero Battle on Hoth, Battle on Tatooine, Hero Battle on Tatooine, Battle on Endor, Hero Battle on Endor, Battle on Sullust, Hero Battle on Sullust.

Survival is basically the horde mode you mentioned. 4 options to pick from: Survival on Tatooine, Survival on Sullust, Survival on Endor, Survival on Hoth.

I think we might see a true single player campaign somewhere down the line in the form of DLC. Fingers crossed!

Multiplayer is where this game really shines. It's such a nice change of pace from the typical FPS. I'm having fun picking and choosing which cards (grenades, perks, temporary 1 time use weapons, etc...), permanent weapon and appearance items to unlock. Once you start advancing in points and rank, you can really start to hone in on your personal play style. It's a lot of fun and I highly suggest it to anyone who might be on the fence about getting it.
  • Alright.... Who else feels cheated buying this game and finding out there is no single player story mode. I'm beyond disappointed. I'm not an online shooter guy... I'm just not good at it and don't want to put in the hours to be good at it, just to get sidetracked by real life, come back and suck again.... I'm taking it back to the store... I consider it a waste.... At least I won't have any games distracting me from Fallout 4 now.

And there's not even an Instant Action mode for you to just fight bots if you want.

Giant let down. It's EA tho. Sooo yea.
  • cmon guys read up on the game before you buy it lol. thats been known for a awhile

I dont like it either, but Im not going to buy something like a shooter based online game blind. Thats like buying call of duty modern warfare for the campaign. Yeah its there sorta but no one plays it. Blows, but thats the way games are now.

I personally probably wouldnt own a ps4 or xbox one without liking online gaming. Not a ton of big titles that arent focused soley online. Occasional bloodborne good game but those are getting few and far between.
  • can I play as an ewok? That's literally all I care about
  • I guess I should start complaining that The Witcher III and Fallout 4 have no multiplayer....Oh wait, I knew exactly what I was getting them for before I bought them. Google searches work wonders, who knew?!

There is a single player aspect to this game which I've detailed in a previous post here. It's just not the "campaign" that some folks are looking for. How many SW games let you play as Vader, Palpatine, Bobo Fett, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, and Rebel or Imperial soldiers in the same game? My only gripe with character choice is the lack of Chewbacca and Ewoks (although you see them on all the Endor scenarios) but maybe we'll see them in a future DLC.

The Battlefront series was always about epic battles with vehicles in random locations from the movies. If I want an epic story, I'll go play Knights of the Old Republic, The Force Unleashed 1 and 2, etc.... I can't think of 1 Star Wars game ever made that goes through the original trilogy storyline within 1 game. I'm in agreement about wanting a traditional campaign but the fact that SW BF is pretty much the multiplayer GOTY imo, I let it slide.

    Exactly

The posts above make ya sound like old guys haha
'I can't deal with multiplayer the youngings are kicking my butt

Btw it was totally known that this was going to be a multiplayer game, even the free beta showed it >.>
  • The last "new" Star Wars game I played was Rouge Squadron on Gamecube.

Best Buy had a deal for $10 in bonus rewards points for purchasing Battlefront, plus I get 20% off with the Gamers Club thing, so I figured what the hell. It looked cool and I was hoping it would be something like Rouge Squadron. Fortunately once it arrived I decided to read up on it a little more prior to opening...I can't think of anything I am less interested in than an online only FPS. Returned to Best Buy it went.

Rogue Squadron is a flying game. I'm not sure how you thought SW Battlefront was going to be a single player flying game....lol but there are plenty of ships you can utilize. There's an entire mode in SW BF dedicated to just flying ships.

The only video I had seen of it was the Hoth level, flying around the AT-AT (like on the first post of this thread).

Ahh ok. I wouldn't mind seeing remasters of all the N64 and GC SW titles. They're all fun games imo.

    ^This

I was a bit worried that it would be lacking, but there are at least a dozen maps (with a free ep.7 map out next month) and nine modes.  Some of these I didn't think I was going to enjoy, like Flight Squadron and Heroes vs Villains and it turns out even those are a lot of fun too.

Heroes vs Villains, Supremacy, and Walker Assault have been the top 3 I've been playing the most. Flight Squadron is great when I just want a break from the ground combat.

Supremacy can be pretty brutal at times. I feel like I die more often in that game mode than any other. If I come across at least 2 enemies at the same time, I rarely ever get out of the firefight alive unless I use my jump pack or sneaky maneuvering. Sorosuub Centroplex and Endor in particular, I feel like I die within a minute or two of spawning in. It's fun though because it's a 40 player game mode so it really feels like you're in this epic battle for the control points.

Heroes and Villains is just a lot of fun because every round you get to be someone different. From my experience, Princess Leia and Palpatine are the weakest. Leia's shield doesn't do much when the enemy throws a thermal grenade in it. Palpatine is good for taking out a small group of troops with the link lightning but I always die faster with him than any other character on the dark side. Bobo Fett is somewhere in the middle if you know how to utilize his jump pack and missile. He's particularly difficult to kill when you're on the opposing team and he's using the jump pack. Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader are more powerful than Leia, Palpatine, and Fett but I've honestly had the most success and kills with Han Solo. If you can hit the enemy with Han Solo's far right perk (the one where you have to hold down for a few seconds) it damages them pretty heavy. Then follow up with Solo's middle perk which makes your blaster more powerful for a certain amount of time.
