I've been getting backdoored more often than not in the last 1+ year with facebook group and craigslist sales. Also, people early-birding any garage sale that mentions anything video game related. I've quit going to any advertised video game garage sales because even if I show up an hour early (which I think is rude and not to mention inconvenient for me) I still miss it. I've narrowed down at least one of the culprits (backdooring & early-birding) to a local NA member. I won't name them but goddammit this is getting really old.
Anyway else remember when this hobby wasn't cutthroat at all?
Same thing here man! In 2009 a local guy started ebaying and would go to houses at 6:00am if they advertised games. He made garage sales pointless for me, I went from finding tons of games, to only finding afew commons after that. He always started 2 hours before sales opened, and was finished before I started(I'm not one to knock on doors to find games) The only places I found games after that was at unadvertised sales.
Craigslist is the same way, I found tons of games. More than I could even buy prior to 2012, but now there are 2 guys locally that put out 2-3 buy adds aday, and even flag everyone elses. I havent had a good CL haul in 2 years. The last one I had I had to drive 2 hours for, and the ladys boyfriend pulled 3/4 of the games out of the lot and demanded the full price we had decided on. I only bought that one because I needed afew of the games in the lot.

Right know I'm sticking with the high road but man is it getting tempting to join the dark side with each passing backdoor incident

That sucks. Sounds very similar to my area. Things used to be great and I had good relationships with other collectors/gamers in my area but this new breed of collectors is down right terrible. Not to mention Damn near every garage sale I do find anything at is high end eBay prices. Hopefully things turn around for us both but I wouldn't hold my breath. What doesn't kill me makes me whinier haha
Actually the true collectors here are an awesome group, but there are just too many seller only types here. The people that collect and sell always hook me up with sweet deals!

yeah I think knocking on their doors is a bit excessive, if i was the one in the house i would say fuck off and refuse to sell to them even if they waited. I'd even put something really good out unpriced to piss them off (yes I'm petty, and its fun)

Last year I ran a big garage sale with tons of games and action figures. I advertised two weeks prior through Facebook and Craigslist. Another local reseller called me out on Facebook for being over priced (because I wouldn't sell in bulk) he also created a Craigslist ad telling people not to come to my sale. So I found some of his Craigslist postings (easy to spot) and scheduled a few fake meetings. Once he drove almost 45 minutes one way, and I thought that was good payback.

Lol, got to love the douchebags on Craigslist. They have a million reasons why you should sell them your games at $1 per game, and if they have something you want they have a million reasons why you should pay more than eBay for them.
Saw a guy at the local Replay on Saturday. Reseller extraordinaire. I was at the counter for about 45 minutes talking with the manager and employees. While I was talking I noticed him with an Ipad going through the SNES games. He had a box sitting on the floor by the game shelf. He was lookingup each game, then listing it on Amazon if there was any profit margin at all. After he was done listing each title he would throw them into the box on the floor. He was taking a huge chunk of the SNES games. I'm not sure if he hit all the classic systems after I left, but it was sad to see him take a well stocked shelf and reduce it to next to nothing.
Another thing is, I have no idea how he was making any money. The big reseller that hits this store cleans out most profitable flips every few days. some of the games I doubt he was making any money on after fees and shipping.

Don't do it. You might divert the guy, but you'll also waste the time of the non-asshat game hunters out there.
not a video game example but one i feel stupid about doing. i went to a garage sale a week or two ago and saw four large totes of sports cards (basketball football a few baseball) literally around 7,500 cards at least. i dont know any thing about sports cards but i noticed they were from the 1980s and 1990s (thinking they were relatively vintage) and relatively good shape, in binders and such, so i made an offer and ended up buying all of them for $45. so today i finally got around to looking them up and basically they are about worthless. i read an article about how they were all preserved during the collectors/hobby rush in the late 1980s early 1990s when wannabe investors scooped them up hoping to make a profit , now they are not worth anything. so now i have thousands of sports cards sitting around that i cannot do anything with. luckily i found a few non sports items in the bottom of a tote (mainly a phantasy star ii guide book) that i hopefully can sell for at least $20 to recoup some of the loss.

Sorry to hear you feel this is a loss. If you knew nothing, why the gamble? Either way, $45 for 7,500 cards approx. does not seem bad at all. If you sell them at 25 cents each, well you do the math.

problem is they were so mass produced and collected that you would be lucky to sell 25 for 1 single penny. Your best bet is to pick out the popular players and and toss that up on ebay and then just donate the rest to get rid of them. I had this problem i collected sports cards in the late 80's and early 90's and when i moved out of my parents house i think i sold like 7 monster boxes full of cards for like $80.

Yeah, I figure that doing that would make me part of the problem and not part of the solution. No sense in wasting other peoples' time & money to get revenge against evil local resleers & one bad-egg NAer

not to mention.. some of the cards (around 50 ) looked like they have black mold on them... had to throw straight into trash. AND the huge black widow spider that crawled out of the binder when i opened it up. not a fun scenario

When I was a kid and into baseball cards, my friends and I all saw how much the cards our Dads collected as kids were worth. When we asked our Dads about them we were told that they threw that stuff away because no one ever thought they would be worth money. That's why those cards were so valuable, because there weren't that many around anymore. EVERYONE my age didn't want to make that mistake, so we kept everything. Combine that with the fact that they also produced more of that type of stuff since it was popular and you now have a market with way too much stock without enough demand to keep the prices high. That's why the stuff we collected as kids is worthless now.
For the same reason, I don't think that current gen games will hold their value the way that NES or SNES games are. Of course there will be some rare limited run stuff, but most of the current gen stuff won't be worth much.
Drove 30 minutes on my lunch break to meet up with a guy off craigslist. He had a sealed DMG game boy in the first print box for $100. Arrived at the meeting location, he didnt show up. Called 3 times and texted him twice, no answer. Sat for about 20 minutes and drove back to work.
Funny story here... I wasn't the looser/weeper, it was the store. I hate to brag about another person's misfortune, but it's just too funny.
I was at a bookstore afew towns over, and they had just put a ton of games online because they were not selling in store, but they still had them on their shelves. The prices on the shelf were acouple years old, and well below ebay prices, so I bought quite afew that I had been wanting and left. I found out later that the owner was too lazy to take them off of ebay, and their ebay store got taken down because they got so many negative feedbacks.

Ouch, that owner must be REALLY lazy not to take the listings off. Maybe he didn't care much for the games?

She was just lazy. She bought an established store and just sat behind the counter eating delivery pizza, playing WOW, and reading books all day. She had a kid that would come in a couple days a week and put the trade-in books, games, and movies on the shelves and clean. I was in there probably 10 times in the few years that she owned the shop and it was a mess. Once I had to wait 15 minutes for her to finish a raid on WOW before she would even ring me up.

Wow, just wow... with what money did she buy the establishment being that lazy? I would be surprised if the store is still stading! If I was there I would've left inmediately. Reminds me of a gaming repair shop that I went to once, the guy literally had a graveyard of consoles scattered around the store floor, you could see dust everywhere, random games tossed about, heck If I stole a game the dude running the place wouldn't even notice. He also charged unrealistic prices for repairs and parts, I asked him for capacitors for an Xbox 360 and told me he would sell them for $30 and 40GB (read, 40GB) hard drive for a PS3 for $80. Guy afterwards moved from the place to literally the next building and the sad part is he is still standing and people are getting ripped off by his prices and sketchy schemes.
IDK how this woman got the store, but I remember hearing that she came into money somehow, I think a divorce got her a down payment on the store. She ended up selling the store to someone else and they just took the games and movies then shut the place down once she bumped the rent up. Last I saw the books were still in the vacant store.
at a garage sale a few weeks ago, I saw a wii with all cords and the fitness board. I didn't bother asking how much figuring it was $20 + (would never pay more than $20 for a wii, already have enough of them). any way a guy walks up and asks how much for the wii and the lady says $5. he bought it right then and there. probably could have gotten at least $30 for it on ebay. oh well.

I found an eBay auction for an American Apple @world Pippin, two opened digipak copies of Super Marathon, two copies of Power Rangers, some other games, a controller, and the keyboard peripheral. It all sold for $200, Super Marathon alone is worth up to double that...
about a year ago a listing for 4 test carts came up on ebay 2 yellow (power pad and control deck) 2 grey ntf2 and controller. it was a biding one i had the money but needed to buy a new lens for my dslr camera i figured it was a fake listing or would go for 2000 or possibly more dollars. so i let it go. i checked back and it went for 900 doller...s and so i wanted to see if the listing was real. the guy that bought it gave positive feed back. that was just last year if i had known it would go for 1000 or less i would have bid on it. still p***ed off about that one... cause i owned 2 out of 4 of the carts and could have resold them and got most of my money back.
A few weeks ago I saw two Wisdom Tree protos (Bible Buffet and Joshua) on ebay. The seller had listed them as 'Office Test Cart', so they went unnoticed by most proto collectors (if the lack of bidding was any indication). I stupidly underbid and the auction ended during a work meeting so I was distracted, and they both went for ~$120 each (I would have paid more). I've been kicking myself ever since. The seller hadn't touched them in 20 years, so they could be betas that I would have had the opportunity to discover, or, at the very least, relatively inexpensive protos. if any of you bought them congrats on the find and let us know if they're any differences (or if you want to sell )!

Start putting up fake garage sale ads to divert him.
Sadly, the thought has crossed my mind many times. Right know I'm sticking with the high road but man is it getting tempting to join the dark side with each passing backdoor incident

Start putting up fake garage sale ads to divert him.

Another thing is, I have no idea how he was making any money. The big reseller that hits this store cleans out most profitable flips every few days. some of the games I doubt he was making any money on after fees and shipping.

Sadly, the thought has crossed my mind many times. I'm torn between playing their BS game to help my collection or taking the high road (what I've done thus far) and at least know I'm not a shit person poisoning the hobby. Right know I'm sticking with the high road but man is it getting tempting to join the dark side with each passing backdoor incident
Don't do it. You might divert the guy, but you'll also waste the time of the non-asshat game hunters out there.
the ad says "$20 sounds fair for these games".... i forget the all the titles, but "bubble bath babes" was third on the list.
emailed him, and he said he sold the lot earlier in the day.
sigh
craigslist ad "old NES games"...

Don't feel too bad, it was probably a troll ad.
not a video game example but one i feel stupid about doing. i went to a garage sale a week or two ago and saw four large totes of sports cards (basketball football a few baseball) literally around 7,500 cards at least. i dont know any thing about sports cards but i noticed they were from the 1980s and 1990s (thinking they were relatively vintage) and relatively good shape, in binders and such, so i made an offer and ended up buying all of them for $45. so today i finally got around to looking them up and basically they are about worthless. i read an article about how they were all preserved during the collectors/hobby rush in the late 1980s early 1990s when wannabe investors scooped them up hoping to make a profit , now they are not worth anything. so now i have thousands of sports cards sitting around that i cannot do anything with. luckily i found a few non sports items in the bottom of a tote (mainly a phantasy star ii guide book) that i hopefully can sell for at least $20 to recoup some of the loss.

Funny story here... I wasn't the looser/weeper, it was the store. I hate to brag about another person's misfortune, but it's just too funny.

Guy afterwards moved from the place to literally the next building and the sad part is he is still standing and people are getting ripped off by his prices and sketchy schemes.
at a garage sale a few weeks ago, I saw a wii with all cords and the fitness board. I didn't bother asking how much figuring it was $20 + (would never pay more than $20 for a wii, already have enough of them). any way a guy walks up and asks how much for the wii and the lady says $5. he bought it right then and there. probably could have gotten at least $30 for it on ebay. oh well.
