Wow, Free is Super cool! I have a free GameGavel account because I was a seller there from day one, however I rarely sell on that site because of lack of buyers. I think one reason that GameGavel is lacking in buyers is because several of the big sellers there will take one picture of 20+ games, then make 20 listings(one for each game in the pic) and price them out individually.
Is there a way you can keep sellers from using pics like that? Make a solid rule from the start that each auction should only show what is actually being sold in the picture?
Thanks for doing this! It's insane to see a business man doing this without charging fees, I know you are making money from advertisements, but it's really impressive to see you turning down potential profit for yourself!
How will feedback work? I know I have had afew bad experiences with List and leave sellers on Game Gavel, How will you combat bad sellers such as that? Is your payment processor as easy to work with in that regard?
I'm excited to have somewhere else to buy games online. Will PayPal work?
Paypal will not be accepted at launch. Just credit cards, debit cards, and bitcoin. All are processed through the same credit card processor, Stripe, that makes it really easy to setup payments for marketplaces. Paypal does not give the same flexibility or ease of setup so we decided to leave that for another time if people do request it.
I was pretty excited about seeing this at first, until I saw that Paypal wasn't being accepted. I would love to use a service like this, especially with no huge fees like Ebay and tailored specifically for video games. But without using Paypal it seems like there is a huge lack of seller and buyer protection, which is pretty essential in a mainly P2P marketplace. I can't wait to see how the service goes, but not having Paypal is a dealbreaker for me... so I certainly hope you decide to reconsider.

Thanks for requesting it. I can understand your concern. Unless the our marketplace has 10% fraud rates, which would be a complete failure on our part, you will come out ahead using our marketplace vs eBay.

We will not be policing every photo because we don't have the resources for that. We are encouraging sellers when they make listings to include good photos and lots of photos. If the photo doesn't match the item, that is definitely grounds for bad feedback so sellers should learn fairly quickly that it costs them sales and costs them reputation on the marketplace.
Reputation will be positive and negative scores based upon completing transactions. There are points for other things too, but all of them measure trustworthiness. You can read more about it in full here.
I assume the price you set includes the shipping since the site states "free shipping". If you ever add Canada to allow to sell I assume you would need a completely separate market or that free shipping model will artificially increase the prices beyond belief, with actual sales to back them up.

Thanks for the feedback on Canada. We would still offer "free shipping" (buyers pay the price shown on the site) but we would probably let sellers add a premium for shipping to international countries because shipping costs can be more. A seller in Canada might include no premium. A seller in USA might increase prices $2 for Canadian buyers.
The prices with shipping would be calculated by our backend. Users would never have to worry about taking shipping into account.
We are looking into Paypal as an option. They complicate integrate quite a bit compared to Stripe. We will have to prioritize that based upon how the marketplace does now with just Stripe as payment option and user feedback.
So how many accounts can I make to manipulate prices?
How would you manipulate prices with multiple accounts?
i guess fake sales at higher than market prices to push the pc value then hope someone thinks the bubble is real? seems like you'd lose on the transaction fees unless you are also sitting on a good supply of the item you are trying to manipulate

That might work on eBay because we don't know if a payment actually occurred or not. That wouldn't work with our marketplace. We know when payment happens. If the payment is refunded we see that too and the sale wouldn't count towards the market value. If someone really wanted to pay for and item that would really increase the cost of doing this scam, probably making it unprofitable.
I can just pay myself and ping pong sold listings higher and higher, and it will get indexed on price charting, so I can take those prices to ebay and further keep the inflation rolling.
How is it price inflation if you are the only one paying the higher prices? You'd just be scamming yourself if you're the one buying your own auctions. Not a well thought through plan.
When I get the price charting price up and create a history, the price for everyone increases.
That's not how demand works though. If price charting lists a $20 game at $300, and everyone on ebay listed them as $300, sure, some people would buy them. But it would also be more supply than demand, and the price would drop. Just look at how many items on ebay are listed for ungodly prices that never sell, or sit for months till they accept a best offer.
If people are willing to pay for the higher price of the items, then it was priced too low to begin with.

Don't underestimate the instant collectors.
Only if you don't over estimate them. Most people who bitch about prices are thinking of prices during the recession.
For me, I took a break during that time. Prices have gone up since when I was collecting, but not nearly as bad as many other items. Dracula X for example on PC-engine for example is hovering around $200 (Someone got it for $125 2 weeks ago, lucky bastard).
When I bought mine, it was $120, this was day one due to import fees. Most other games I could get for $80 imported, not this one though due to demand. Sure it was new, but as time went on, it never dropped much in price. Lowest I ever saw it was $90. in 2000 is was still around $120, but used. $120 when you just take inflation into account with a calculator, it's $170, so not much off in price. So yea, it's gone up faster than inflation in 15 years, but not that much. And it's one of the more expensive games.
The REALLY rare ones, sure, beyond shadowgates isnt cheap for example. But on the flip side, I can buy v-spike sealed in a box for $10 still. Most people who bitch about the prices seem to be people who started during the recession when prices were driven lower than normal.
I have no idea about the feasibility or reward of the proposed scam as related to video games, but I have seen it with real estate. A group of friends (not my friends; a group including the guy who controls the building next to my property) sold a building back and forth to each other multiple times in short term with significantly higher price at each incident.
Is this something to worry about with the VGPC market? I say cross that bridge when we come to it. I think there's enough smart and suspicious people in this community that will recognize before it gets huge. And with JJ a concerned and responsive owner, it can be addressed when it is seen.
Some people blame the messenger for bad news, but we just report the news, we don't create it. For some rare games, most of the buyers and sellers probably check PriceCharting first but for the vast majority of games the transaction takes place with no knowledge of PriceCharting at all. We have grown over the years (10,000 visitors a day roughly) but eBay gets that many to their video game pages every few minutes.
Prices have been increasing because retro games have a fixed supply and more people are collecting.
Our PriceCharting marketplace will help improve pricing data in many different ways, so our prices will only be getting more accurate too. We won't miss sales. We will know exactly what is included. We will even know the condition so some day we could say "Writing on a game lowers the price 5%".

Yikes, that's a lot of transactional friction/expense to try and drive up the price to a real buyer...

He's a speculator. He owns property all over town. It's a relatively large property, and he got it for a pretty good price initially. It's ridiculous to do I agree, but he is a sneaky tricky fucking dirtbag so it goes hand-in-hand.
Will something similar occur in a marketplace without such friction? In that much more serious example, absolutely. So I see the possibility but I will not think it likely until occurrences are evident. Location is not a variable, like it is with real estate. Prices are somewhat established. They are steadily rising, but major manipulation would have to occur at VGPC concurrent with eBay, where there is friction. On the other hand, the hype train can go everywhere...
Well, I thought the new site would be a good place to shop, but maybe right now is too early. The prices seem higher than what I can buy through eBay (eBay's lowest price + shipping included) with consideration for the VGPC seller's fee (shipping already included) for most of the items I looked into. I thought more items would be cheaper than eBay in general due to the savings in fees. Currently, I feel safer with eBay as prices are cheaper for the buyer and a recourse from any possible scammers. Maybe later down the road for me...?
Hey JJ! I'm messing around and trying to make some listings and I don't like the condition choices.
I have some loose carts with clean labels and normal wear like light scuffs/scratches and wear around the edges or I have some CIBs where the Box and/or manual show wear, but the cart is nice.
I would like to choose something like "good" condition, "very good" condition, or some kind of a 1-10 rating for the cart, box, and manual separately.
Which of your conditions should I choose because "no blemishes" isn't accurate for games that aren't mint? "scratched disc" ? That is what I picked for the loose copy of E.V.O I just listed lol
I read through your thread about about condition and what is included and VGD had a few good ideas, but I don't think you read it because you didn't reply to him or use any of the suggestions and they seemed pretty good?

We decided not to use a scale because it is very subjective. We do think there should be another condition for "slight blemishes" or "normal wear" or something like because some games don't match the conditions we have so far. We have an issue for adding that in the near future.
What would you call it? A game with a bit of wear?
At some point photos are required to know the exact condition.
Congrats on expanding JJ! I just tried to list a Super Mario/Luigi Wii U game and keep getting a "500 internal error" message, but I'm sure there are still a few bugs to work out.
