Will the Wii U be dead this time next year?

  • We really don't need to argue over this. I don't know why they don't want the Wii U but thats not my decision. If I wasn't collectikg so much NES and PS2, I would definitely buy it.

wasnt arguing. We were pointing out it made no sense.

  • Haha all the hate on wii u. Isnt nintendo making a profit now and the profits are rising everyday?

The wii u is just plain awesome. If you dont like it and you say u love nintendo u r lying. I own every nintendo system with hours and hours logged on each one and i can say with great confidence it is my second favorite and maybe soon favorite console ever. (Fav being nes)

Although they dont release as often as the crap xbone and ps4 put out the releases they have are home runs. Mario maker, splatoon, smash , kart are top 10 in my all time favs. Tons more that are so good memorable

Also i cant beleive people bitch about the price????? 300 dollars for a brand new system, game pad and 2 awesome games for 300? Isnt a ps4 400? With no games? Dont some of the games costt 100 when you download updates?

for every person say they dont know someone who has a wiiu i say i dont know anyone who doesnt own a wii u that doesnt wish they did after they play it for a while

Zelda U is going to be moved to the NX. I'm betting on it. I personally think this is why it didn't make an appearance at this year's E3.

Either that, or we'll have another TP on our hands where it ends up being on both systems, and the U version gets delayed as a result.

I think it already has dropped in price, so it might not happen again for awhile.

I can see Wii U lasting at least another 2 years.

Do you mean less than $300?  Because I haven't seen it for less than that other than Target or Best Buy doing small temporary sales.

In my mind, $250 is where I draw the line.  If I can't get a new 32GB Deluxe model with at least one game for that price, I will wait.

Yeeh man target had the mario 3d nintendoland bundle for 250 last christmas.  I couldnt believe it that is a steal!  Look out for that agian this xmas i bet

I do not own a Wii U and I am still weirded out by the gamepad. I have not tried it out long enough or given it a fair chance. I have found the game pad far too distracting, but that is just me. I am not bashing it, just stating my attention is always drawn to the pad and not the main screen, which is my fault.

It is, when you think about it a great deal to begin with considering what it brings. I am more bothered by the rising costs of games etc.

    Great points though!

  • Yeah, Wii U is probably my favourite console since SNES. I've had more time and money to invest into the console than the GC and Wii, but even still I think it would still trump those consoles in my opinion. Having said that I agree that Zelda will likely be a launch title for the NX and the Wii U stuff will likely taper off late next year into 2017. I couldn't care less if someone doesn't own a Wii U, but I think they are missing out on some great games if that's the case.

Right on man, i just dont want to see any nintendo fans not give it a fair shake and miss out!   Do yourself a favor man if you can swing it i know it will go onsale for 250 again this christmas with a great games bundle just keep your eyes peeled.  If you think about it 60 bucks for a game is the same it has always been and i think nintendo is aware that for the common gamer they keep things affordable.  Where you can break the bank on nintendo is with all the limited releases of systems, amiibos, controller options etc.   I think that is very cool, if you want a basic system and games to play it is very affordable, if you want to go nutz and blow a bunch of money you can do that too but you dont have to.

I never even heard of the wii u until i saw a commercial for mario kart 8 in the spring of 2014 and i bought it just for that game thinking it would be all i play.....fast forward to now wii u it is all i want to play these days.  They did a great job with motion controls and gamepad, you really dont need the gamepad at all except for lego undercover, splatoon, party games and mario maker building levels.  everything else you can play with a pro controller or wii mote.  the old wii motes work on this as well if you want to save some cash.  They use the game pad in some really ingenious ways i love it especially for party games like nintendoland.

My dissapointments are pretty slim but mainly i am bummed  they dont have sports games like nba or nhl 2k, mario party 10 was a let down for single player but i still find this fun multi player and is great for young kids.

oh and i forgot toad treasure tracker uses game pad also and that game is a total gem!  love it so much and it is hours of fun for only 40 bucks

They did have sports games the first year.

  • I bought it when rumours started that Nintendo would discontinue it after poor sales for Christmas 2013; found a brand new console on Kijiji for $200, I thought worst case scenario I'll get all the games on clearance and it will be worth it.

Well this console has been used a lot since then, a lot more than my PS3, and I can play some games with my wife and my daughter. To me it was a very good investment, now that I know that, I would have gladly paid full price originally it would have been worth it. I must admit, however, that I rarely use the Gamepad other than using it for off-screen play. Mario Maker is the exception.
  • There's like 5 games my gf and I want to play on this. Maybe we'll just wait until Nintendo moves onto another console like this.

    Meh.
  • Wii Us over? Fuck, I'm still trying to catch up on gamecube, that's the "new" system for me. Course I never trusted a system that looked like tinki-winky's purse.
  • IMO this entire generation sucks. Wii U especially

Then they arent diehard nintendo friends. Im sorry if you love nintendo games at that level, you should own a wii u. Some of the best nintendo games ever on the system. They might be old 8, 16 and 64 bit era fans or something. But I find it hard to believe a diehard nintendo fan wouldnt own a wii u right now.

I know two people who own every nintendo system as well as one full set each (NES and n64) that don't own a Wii U. The one person I know who has one never plays it.

    But they don't own a Wii U?

My question as well, that's a mega head-scratcher. The first-party titles are great, and if you own a full set of NES or N64 games chances are you've spent considerably more than the cost of a Wii U on one game at some point or another. Just doesn't make sense.
  • I own a dozen Wii U games and they're all highly enjoyable and often very cleverly produced games.  I think even if Nintendo comes out with their NX console it won't usurp the Wii U immediately.  It'll be at least another year of Wii U, and that's still a pretty good run for a console.   But you're talking to people here who still own NES and SNES's and Gamecubes and N64's.  Old Consoles don't go away when new consoles come out.  The games will still be there.
  • How can people say you can't love Nintendo without loving Wii U? That's like saying you can't love video games without loving every console. I love people and bands without being a fan of every single thing they do, why should a company be different than that?

The Wii U looked amazing in the preview trailer,

even Mrs gunpei was excited and she doesn't play games at all. Four years on, the lineup is just underwhelming. I don't care about Smash, and I have few if any people to play Party or Smash or Kart with or even Nintendoland. I'm not convinced Splatoon would hold my interest. I already have Wind Waker, thank you. So it's a very short list of major games for me, and possibly some Wii Ware but I haven't heard about much.

Nintendo is a business, and this console won't give me my money's worth, plain and simple. Wii U can't be done fast enough for me.
  • ^ Wind Waker was so much better on Wii U with the fast sail, tablet for maps and the HUD, and also the updated graphics. If the Wii U is not your cup of tea that's all fine and well but Mario Maker, Bayonetta 2, and Tropical Freeze are all extremely fun games that can supply a lot of gaming on top of some of the others you mentioned. Toad Treasure Tracker is a very chill game and easy to pick up. NSMBU, Luigi U, Mario 3D land, and Wooly World are all great Mario games in my opinion. Splatoon was one of those weird games that I initially loved and then it just fell off the map. They stopped updating it and the lag is ridiculous with non-regional lobbies. Overall, I personally think that the Wii U has the strongest 1st party games since SNES. Almost every game they put out besides Mario Party 10 I have thoroughly enjoyed. Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3 were another couple of great games, but W101 did take some time to get in to.

hey dude correct me if i am wrong but from the sounds of it you have very little play experience witht he wii u?  I felt similar to how you do until i bought it and played it, it was simply amazing

  • Bought my wii U, maybe played it for 2 hours (smash and mario kart) and havent played it since. Have ZERO interest in splatoon (because I like real FPS not kiddie stuff) so I dont really care if it tanks.

    No, that's right.

Andy_Bogomil, updated graphics don't do much for me. I never saw the point of Mario Allstars except to get at SMB2j. I think it's really funny how Nintendo sold WW as "it will still look great years from now (unlike 'realistic' graphics) because cel shading and now it's the opposite.

I am interested in some of the other games you mentioned mainly the next three. Also Hyrule Warriors. Not interested in others for various reasons. I'll take a look at Treasure Tracker and W101. I still consider it a somewhat small list for me to buy in. Thank you for trying to help. Any third-party recommendations? I like action, platformers, 3rd person shooters, and most other kinds of games that can be enjoyed alone, except turn-based RPGs.

Yeah, the graphics may be a small part, but I actually find the HD presents that style in a much better fashion. Anyway, I agree that it's only one game and one that you can play on another console.

I'm not sure how you feel about Ninja Gaiden 3 but that game was pretty intense in terms of action and it's 3rd person. Not a shooter, but might as well be in ways. That game is hard as nails though and I consider myself pretty decent at video games. It's similar to Bayonetta but a little more demanding. Most other 3rd party games you'd be able to find on any other console (Rayman, Shovel Knight, Dues Ex, etc.). Other than all the games we discussed it's pretty thin pickings after that.

I'm not trying to sell you on it as it makes no difference to me whether you own a Wii U or not, just thought I'd fill you in on my experience with the system and let you know of some of the games you may not have thought of. Corey (and others)  pretty much solidifies that the console isn't for everyone and it might not have enough games for other people to justify buying. I just want some people who may have written off completely from the start that there are a very solid set of games for the system.

Having said all that I hated the Wii U the first or two it came out. I was really frustrated with the delays in games and the extremely limited library. This has turned 180 though as I still find myself playing the console all the time.

Here's a list of the released games for the system. Check it out to maybe see something we haven't talked about.

One last suggestion for a game if you like platformers is Guacamelee. Not sure if you've played it, but it's not a bad little platformer with lots of influence from Super Metroid.

What you are describing is a system that isnt nintendo. The first party releases for the wii u are some of the best games they have released. People buy nintendo mainly for those types of games. So thats why we said if you a diehard "nintendo fan" that doenst have a wii u then you arent a die hard nintendo fan. You would then be a vintage nintendo fan.

Wii U has a ton of great games. Most of them being solo games for me. There were a bunch of third party ports early in the systems life. It didnt do anything for the system. Not until they released key nintendo icon franchise games did the sales really pick up.

To be fair both Smash and MK8 I found to be really not all that fun.  I played smash for about 8 hours total, MK8 I could only do for about 30 minutes before I sold it.  There are some good games for the console, but those two definitely don't do it for me.

Agree 100%. You would think the heavy hitters would "hit harder" which is unfortunate. I think we all long for the n64 days again, but it is unlikely to happen.
  • I am not a big fan of the Wii because of the wiimote controller, and even the classic controller pro feels cheapish. Likewise, I'm not really attracted to the Wii U. StarFox Zero on the other hand, sounds cool, but again I don't believe it will be a system seller.

I agree that Nintendo 1st party games are important. They are supposed to be the system sellers, and 3rd parties are just to fill in and recoup some costs or whatever. Yamauchi said, "The hardware is just a box you buy only because you want to play Mario games." And you're also right that I am a vintage fan. Kart and Smash just aren't for me. I like Party, and Wario Ware, but they're not 1P games at all.

Five 1st party games that grab me though isn't quite enough. I need more, whether it's 1st or 3rd, especially now when many games only take 20-30 hours without practice. (that is the vintage part) I have all their other home consoles. Only one Sony (PS2) and no Microsoft. This is just the first gen where I've had such little interest in Nintendo's console, and it makes me a bit sad.

No, of course not. Thank you again for the suggestions and I will do some more "research"

Ultimately I will probably get a U, but I will return to how I did in 64/GC days (when I had expenses but no money) and wait until it's not current gen any more.
