Portable Emu's

I want to set up a portable emulator for a friend so he can play games on the go, but also hook up to a tv at home. I think a psp running emus sounds like the way to go because you can get the av cable for most models.

Is there something else that would be better/easier to set up?

thanks in advance!

  • Could look into this one http://www.jxdofficial.com/jxd-s7800b-7-inch-quad-core-game-console.html

I know someone that uses it for emulators, says its good for what it is, and its pretty cheap.
  • I think thats the easiest. Other than that you could use a smart phone with emulators. You can even hook controllers up to it, even the PS3 remote or xbox 360.

Just about every smart phone can connect via HDMI as well.

Also keep in mind you can buy a cheap smart phone and just take the sim out and use it for games and such. That way you don't waste the battery on your phone. Most phones can get decent battery life playing emulators too, and if you turn just about everything off you can probably squeeze even more out of it.
  • Nvidia shield. Has HDMI out, and I believe streaming capabilities over bluetooth/etc. I rarely play via HDMI but it's nice to know that I can.
  • thanks for the quick replies! the JXD looks awesome! Though I think its a bit big and cumbersome for what I'm trying to do. Really just want to run up to 16 bit stuff for him. I might end up getting one of these devices so I might go for the JXD but thats for later...

I also was looking at the GCW zero, that looks very promising as long as it has nes, snes, and turbo on it and they have gotten the hdmi port on it working I think that would be the simplest way to accomplish this for my friend.
  • psp snes emulators just aren't up to par with how good they should be.
  • Well I always thought a laptop was pretty portable?

I always thought the nvidia shield portable was an exceptional portable emulation machine, the only problem is it lacked opengl support which affected emulators like the n64.  overall it played games great, even dreamcast.  the tablet is my recommendation.

your right but I really mean handheld, gba/psp type that is able to connect to a tv

nvidia looks ok, but does look a bit overkill as well. thanks for the suggestions though keep em coming!
  • Being a bird, all Emu are indeed portable. Didn't read post.
  • If you go with the PSP (which I love and looks great on a HDTV) Make sure you get the component cable, you can't use the A/V cable for games, only viewing pics and stuff like that. Which also means you can only hook it up to TVs with component inputs.
  • If you want on the cheap, a good, used cell phone like from HTC + a HDMI out adapter & controller like a moga would work well, but wont power through the higher-end emulation stuff. The problem is a moga controller is 1/2 the price of a JXD, and it just can't compete.

Edit: I mean, a moga can't complete with a JXD, much better device. But if you can find a cheap moga, that's good.  Or if you have an old cell phone, you may be able to just use a OTG cable and add a USB controller to it.

Well then, how good are you with electronics and soldering? If you are up to the challenge, this is a very nice project; http://www.xodustech.com/projects/raspberry-pi-gameboy-pocket

  • I ended up grabbing a psp go to mess with for now, I'm going to see what I can do with that. Does anyone know if they have gotten the tv/hdmi out working on the GCW Zero yet?
  • Why not the Rasberry Pi?
